So I finally left the room after the Boo Radley stuff. Good times.
The game itself is kind of lacking - the shooting is really, really weird and I am dying a LOT.
Yeah, the gameplay can get pretty frustrating on the higher difficulties, I'd suggest bumping it down to easy, don't worry, you'll still die plenty on the easy setting if you don't use your powers to their fullest.
So I played a little more - one MAJOR gameplay/story problem I have, and one awesome thing behind the spoiler.
DO NOT READ UNLESS YOUVE GOTTEN THE ACHIEVEMENT FOR THE 1ST PART OF THE GAME:
So I burn Uncle's money, and the objective thing says to go back to the Subway to find Jenny and Jimmy. I go back to the subway and dont see them. So I keep following signs for the Orphanage, because thats where they were last I saw them.
I keep following until I get above ground, and i see I have a new objective.
"This is where Jimmy said they took Jenny. She must be inside!"
What? I never FOUND Jimmy.
So what WAS a very, very intense and deeply upsetting story point was kind of diluted by the break in immersion (because why was I there?!) and the fact that I kept thinking "I really wish I saw Jimmy so he could explain what the fuck happened to get Jenny here."
Something THAT major should be a triggered cutscene.
Also this games lack of a minimap is infuriating.
All that said - holy shit this 2nd part is a twist I NEVER saw coming.
EDIT: Yeah, lack of a minimap literally just ended the game for the night. I felt seriously nauseous as I was running in circles looking for where to go next. Great story, but man it gets really annoying at times.

Yeah the problem is, mxmarks, that you ran into the correct area before talking to the guy. So you missed the cutscene and talking and such.
Yeah its just unfortunate that for such a major thing, that its even POSSIBLE to do that.
I walked up to a ton of people in the subway looking for who could talk (when the name appears) and must have just somehow missed him. I'm no game designer, but I'm just saying that if I WAS, I would place him somewhere where if I happened to miss him (as I did), he would shout for me and the game wouldn't let me progress.
Hell, earlier in the game, the FIRST time you meet him, I walked up to somewhere and a cop said "Sorry, this area is off limits", and I wandered elsewhere until I found Jenny and Jimmy. After talking to them, Jimmy suggested I go to the very same area that I just got denied entry to minutes ago, and lo and behold it was open for me to explore.
I just dont know why they wouldnt use that same tactic here when this is a major, major plot point.
Also - after playing this for a bit tonight (I may ask a question later about how to progress. I like figuring things out on my own but its bugging me), I watched that Fringe episode in Season 1 that centered around Charlie. I really like Kirk Acevedo and am sad he's not coming back for the sequel.

So I just beat it. I really did like the story - not as much as like, Nier, but I did like it.
I think the reason that it didnt go from really, really good to "best of the best" to me was because of how confusing things got. A lot of moments where I wasnt sure why things happened, and unfortunatley it was the most critical moments.
I already mentioned somehow missing the guy who tells you Jenny was kidnapped, and then spending most of the really emotional scene just being like "Why is she here?"
The second thing was when you get to the heart of the Darkness. It was pretty fucking awesome, and I was flailing and fighting, and I had headphones on, and it was creepy and suddenly I hear Jenny - "There has to be another way."
Thats when I notice the Darkness talking about my violence feeding him, so I decide that I shouldnt fight. So I stand there, and die. Ok, take 2...
This time I get in a corner to think, which gave me some cutscene where the Darkness yells at me that he owns me. Then I notice someone behind him (Jenny?) So I walk towards him and attempt to go behind him...
And then I reabsorb him? Someone explain that to me. I was trying to control him, so I expelled hima nd all his powers, only to just reabsorb him? I really didn't get what happened or why...
And finally the last level, all the way to the moment you kill Paulie was fucking awesome. Watching the Darkness take over and just slipping in and out of what he was doing was just too cool - but once you get to Paulie, you realize that you may kind of have a choice...and I decided fuck him. So I readied the Darkness, and went for the impale.
...and it just kind of barely brushed up against Paulie and he fell over. Laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame.
But dont get me wrong - overall the game was fun, and maybe clearing up a little of the plot (a lot of the choices I made seemed to never have any payoff) will give me a better perspective.
If anything now I have even more respect for Mike Patton's crazy talent.
One big question:
I still have no idea what my grandfather was talking about. His death was dramatic, and when he said he gets it about the darkness and the light, and then the Darkness swallows him up, I figured that would pay off. I was trying to figure out all game what he meant, and figured there HAD to be a parallel in the LIGHT house that would allow me to make Grandpa proud...and it just never came. Kind of made his story feel like a waste - well not a WASTE, but just an unresolved major plot thread...

Reabsorbing the Darkness I think was supposed to be symbolic that Jacky was going to try exert control over the Darkness and that Jenny would try and keep him from slipping to far into the Darkness.
RE: the Grandfather. The entire Escado family has been cursed by the Darkness for ages. The Darkness lives in their bloodline and is passed down to the next generation at the moment of conception and kills the previous host. He was trying to imply that if you have nothing to hope for and protect you will be consumed completely by the Darkness. Jenny is Jacky's light. With out her, he is nothing but another puppet for the Darkness to manipulate.
Ah - gotcha. I like that. Wish Gramps was a little more specific though!
Great story - just wish it was slightly more explained. I normally dont need things spelled out for me, but this game just kind of sometime shoved a big plot revelation in your face without really setting up that something big was coming.
Also - I saw up top someone said something about the Angelous. I was just going through my unlocks and saw concept art for it, and thought, did I totally miss that thing!? Where and what was that!?
Also just bought Mike Patton's solo album (under the name "Peeping Tom") off Amazon because he's so damn talented I needed something more.

Angelous -
In their comic universe there are 3 powers that are the primary power sources.
The Darkness, The Witchblade, and the Angelous.
Angelous are basiclly warrior angels that have one goal. To completely and utterly destroy their opposite the Darkness. The Witchblade is neutral and maintains the balance. Granted Jacky and Sara (The witchblade) tend to side with each other more often than not against the Angelous. They maybe angels but they are just as mean and cruel as the darkness.
I beat this game just yesterday, and holy shit this game was fantastic. Some of the most fun I've ever had in an fps. Great story and characters too. The Darkness is the worst fucking thing to ever fuck anything. Oh god why
did Jenny have to die like that. To make it worse, go to her apartment afterwords and ring the bell. Go on. Do it.
Honestly, the game looks gorgeous, but very, very different. The lack of Darkness vision annoys me. A lot. But Mike Patton is back, and from the sounds of it the old voices are too, so that's great.
I played the demo back at PAX Prime and had a blast with it. I'm curious if this is the same one I played, even if it is Imma play the crap out of this demo. Mechanically, the game is definitely tightened up and combat flows a lot better than the first Darkness. If they can preserve the story and character quality from the first game D2 is gonna be faptastic.
Breaking off a car door and using it as mobile cover while you take down a dude, then throwing said car door at the dudes mate slicing him in half while you tentacle another dude and burst through his chest is brilliant.
Shame about Acevedo but it's still super chaotic but still amazingly controllable, looks fantastic too. Can't wait for release
I'm sad that Starbreeze isn't behind this, but DAMN, the demo itself did a LOT to abate my concerns. The new art direction is really sharp and gives it some distinction, and I'm kinda liking the slight headfuckery that comes from 'quad-wielding,' but then I'm a sucker for unusual combat systems.
And oh DAMN, slicing someone in half with a car door is something I didn't know I wanted until I did it XD Think I may have to pick this up after all.

on the other hand, such a great emotional moment.
The demo for the Darkness II is about to come out on XBL. I am moderatley excited.

Really? I was given to understand that took place at the very end. Maybe I'll pick it up then, it's only $5 at Gamestop...
Nope. It's sort of a twist, but more of a plot development then anything. It's what sets you on your Roaring Rampage of Revenge.

And yet I obsessively completed as many little side quests as I could find.
I should finish it at some point.
I did as many as I could, apart from that crazy woman who wanted me to pick up her damn change from in front of a train.
Worst game of chicken ever.

Not bad at all. You stop noticing the cell shading pretty quickly.
Granted, being kinda busy impaling people on parking meters will do that.
Looks pretty fun, if not exactly as atmospheric as it's predecessor.
