IIRC there is an episode of the anime in which Dawn's Pachirisu is flinging itself off trees and the like in order to learn to fly, at one point using balloons to float. I am 100% convinced at the time that episode was written the anime writers had just been shown a prototype design for Emonga during the development of the gen V games and wanted to insert some foreshadowing, so that they could flashback to Pachi's trial and tribulations when it finally did evolve in a Best Wishes episode in which Ash and his new friends ran into Dawn much like Misty's Togetic. But GF later retconned it so Pachi and Emo were different species, much to the frustration of the anime writers, Pokemon fans and generally sane people all over the world.
