Are you saying Barla Von gave Shepard that information just because she was famous? The dialogue is literally

"Normally this information would cost a small fortune. But these are exceptional circumstances, so I am going to give it to you for free."

    "What's the catch?"

"There is no catch. The Shadow Broker is quite upset with Saren right now. He used to do a lot of business, until Saren turned on him."

SB already hired Wrex to deal with Saren's betrayal, this was just extra help. Garrus would be as appreciated as Shepard.

No, I'm saying that Barla Von gave Shepard the information for free A: Because the Shadow Broker was pissed at Saren and B: Shepard was a candidate for first human Spectre, and thus, presumably, could get shit done.

    Garrus is a mid-ranking C-Sec officer.

EDIT: Seriously let's go through the available backgrounds:

    Shepard either:

Is the last remaining person in her unit, remaining essential mentally and physically unscathed or

A literal, honest-to-god WAR HERO or

A commander who has shown they have no qualms making decisions that result in a large number of deaths to get the job done

All of these things point to Shepard being a special case.

That was never mentioned in Barla Von's reasoning. SB just wants Saren dead and the more people working on that goal, the better.

Plus, for C-Sec, Barla Von's evidence might well be inadmissible.

The Shadow Broker operates on full disclosure of all reasoning.

    right?

ALSO, The Shadow Broker might not feel comfortable giving information directly to a C-Sec officer, even if that C-Sec officer doesn't like always going by the book.

What Garrus is, is a badass. I can't fathom not liking him. He may be a mid-rank C-sec officer, but his actions prove him to be a badass, and of all viable male options for Fem-Shep to hook up with, he was the obvious choice. Dude doesn't need rank to be awesome.

Also he led my second party to victory on my insanity run on the suicide mission.

Shepard doesn't use him either, the actual evidence is Tali's data.

Garrus can't touch Barla Von and I have no idea why he would bother to omit that Shepard is the only one badass enough to handle this job, especially since he's not above hiring random krogan mercs.

The only character in either game who is actually anywhere near as good as Shepard is Zaeed. He isn't as good a leader, but he's the same unstoppable, kill-everything bastard machine.

He even gets his own renegade interrupts.

but Garrus was on the right track to GET Tali's data, via Dr. Michel

Shepard just shows up and helps out. It's possible he wouldn't put everything together quite as fast.

BUT with Mass Effect being a game about Shepard it's not unreasonable for the timeline to bend a bit to allow Shepard to be as badass as possible, and so the mercs always ambush Tali just in time for Shepard to save the day, either by ignoring Dr. Michel or not.

You know, liking Tali over Garrus is the first step on the path to horrible fanfiction and pornographic pictures involving her, Shepard, and Legion.

Don't go down that horrible path.

Accept Garrus as your space batman. Embrace the love.

Don't his bodily fluids, like, dissolve Shepard's flesh or something? I seem to recall Mordin mentioning something like that.

Personally, my fem-Sheps enjoy a sexual experience that doesn't include complete complete system shutdown. It's why she and Harbinger broke up.

Garrus is good, but compared to Zaeed, he is a little girly man.

Actually, as a list, what were all the combat operations Zaeed talks about? I mean ALL of them?

Dropping hot into the Krogan DMZ.
Blows up the Turian Frigate Verikan.
Loses track over the number of Cerberus agents he's killed, 50+.
Kills a Krogan warlord and retinue that highjacks the ship he was on (Die Hard in SPACE!).
Kills over a hundred Batarian slavers and their boss with Jessie.
Survives an ambush of two Batarians, a Krogan, and a Hanar.
    Escaped a Batarian death prison.
    Assassinated a Turian arms dealer.
    Killed an STG operative.
Survived an Asari commando as a girlfriend.

    Any I'm missing?

Places like Omega exist because the people of the Terminus need them to exist. And if he really wanted to change things, killing a bunch of mercs is not the way to do it. That is every day on Omega. He just raised the death rates temporarily. Did you ever meet a single person on Omega who actually appreciated what he did? Even Garrus admits nothing changed. If he had balls, he would at least go after Aria. But if he really had balls, he would go back to the Citadel and do real police work to really change people's lives.

But if he really had balls, he would meet up with Liara or do something to fight the reapers.

you're such an amazing troll it's unbelievable. any of the events you've listed can be reinterpreted into morally questionable/boring actions.

rebuilding tuchanka = murdering clans that do not want to participate, generally bullying and tyranny to get his way.

dark energy & geth = running errands for daddy with a full military escort.

SB = trying. trying. who ends up with the hot lead? TIM. gz Liara for failing even harder than the failures over at cerberus.

special agent = yeah jenkins was N7. died like a noob. you can't gleam anything from rank.

garrus might be running around killing people but that's incidental. he's justice personified. in another universe he'd be Judge Vakarian.

After Horizon he mentions how that was a hell of a fight.

He then brings up an eight year old girl he met once who was captured by slavers, killed them, and joined up with his band on the way to Omega.

Technically he's not there to murder anyone, per se. He was there to disrupt bad guy operations. In the ME universe, that ends up with killing a lot of mercs. Even Paragon Shepard slaughters tons of mercs because nobody has twigged to the fact that Shepard will slaughter you if you draw iron on him/her.

The only other people badass enough to do that is Zaeed and Sheperd.

Garrus was so badass that it took 3 mercenary groups and a bunch of hired freelancers to take him down.

And who cares if he's a bit sociopathic, my Shepard isn't doing much better. I left an entire facility full of people to die a burning and horrible death to take out one guy.

Mentioned that Jaroth was behind half the black market Eezo on the citadel, for example.
