Alright, cool, thanks for the info.

Time to retire my trusty plasma cutter I think.

It's not that I don't love you Plasma Cutter. I just need something new, yknow?

Pulse Rifle + Force gun methinks ... or .. maybe Javelin Gun. I really want to know what all the fuss is about with that thing.

I think the appeal in the Javelin gun is that is incredibly satisfying to stick a Necro to a wall. Especially a charging stalker. Then, once you have explodey javelins, it just becomes epic. It makes the ending sequence of the game a lot easier in my opinion.

The javelin gun slightly edges out the coolness of the contact beam secondary fire. I always feel like a badass hitting the ground with it and watching all the Necros fly back.

Contact Beam is cooler once you get the special upgrade.

You hit the alt-fire and suddenly you're surrounded by a cloud of stasised body parts.

Contact Beam does manage to check both the 'single massive damage' box and the 'indiscriminate carnage' boxes, though. Javelin only reliably manages the first one.

Detonator is great fun, but it loses its luster around chapter 11 or so, where the growing numbers of black necros means it's not a reliable one hit kill.

I tried a round 2 speedrun on Zealot this time. 3:07.
Since I still spent a little time switching suits and hitting the store, I'm sure I can get under 3 hours, maybe 2:50.

Also, I'm upgrading the flamethrower to best choice for decompression switches. Aim roughly towards the switch and hold the button down, and it will hit the switch. This actually managed to work against me on one occasion, as it shut the door a little too fast and left a leaper in the room with me. I found this out when it jumped me as I opened a door.

Oh yes I think I upgraded to that just about Ch. 13 or 14, which was perfect timing. It makes the whole mad dash sequence much easier. The contact beam is also perfect for the
fight in Isaac's head much easier. Anytime those little guys get to close, alt-fire was enough to get rid of most of the group and allow me to focus on Nicole.

    Man, fuck chapter 6.
I have to admit, that first baby moment with the crazy woman embracing it... I was not expecting that. Maybe for it to burrow into her chest, or drip acid on her, or something. Not just KAPLOWW! I actually jumped back instinctively in-game, like a reflex. It was a bit easier once I realized I could use their infantile corpses as impromptu grenades, though.

As far as the DLC suits and weapons go, which, if any, provide any sort of advantage? Are any of the weapons really new?

I guess one of the drawbacks to watching some of the EA trailers regarding DS2 was that they spoiled some of the moments like that.

yeah, but it does eventually get old. it's great the first 50 times you do it, but good luck using it in time against stalkers. most people will misjudge their speed, and you're not invincible during the animation.

also, the javelin's got a higher fire rate/waaaaaaaay cheaper ammo/more efficient stack size

The biggest thing I don't like about the armor and weapon DLCs - and this was true for DS1 also - is that they clutter up the store and inventory UI something fierce. With how much of Dead Space's feel is dependent on it's somewhat clean, minimalist take on UI, well, fuck that.

hmm. finally up to the end for my first playthrough on zealot. and...
while the majority of the game was fairly easy, the last bit actually did pick it up in that I had to plan ahead to get through those fights. but then it just hit the cheese button for like 10 minutes. That running sequence was just annoying.

actually had to stop for the night due to time, but then the whole black enemies on dark terrain with swishy smoke visual was also fairly annoying. I could probably adjust my tv settings but eh. debating rolling back to a prior save just to get there with more ammos. there are choke points in the terrain I could use, and I do have 4-5 med packs, but eh. I imagine it would be a lot less of a hassle if I had brought more contact ammo to kill the boss with.

I'm guessing the next game will have a finale on
Earth. And that Issac will kamikaze a Controller Marker with the Ishimura. Post credits, we'll see an alien race uncovering a human made Marker, and in subtitles one of the aliens will say "Make us Whole."

Finally managed to play this game and got hooked. Went though my zealot run in almost one go. D:

I don't like the new way dialog is handled on surround sound set ups, however. The first game did this perfectly, why did they have to go and change it? It should be center channel all the time unless I make Isaac face a completely different direction during a conversation. In locked scenes, center is a must but, for some reason, they disabled it and made it all go to the front side speakers. :?

I had a hard time understanding anything Nicole said when she had her spook filter on, among other things.

Anyway, I'm planning to do my Hardcore run sometime this week. Totally surprised it's only survivalist difficulty!

Its Survivalist for enemy damage, but Zealot for item drops.

That's fine, zealot felt like it gave me just the right amount of items and ammo. Any more would have made the store redundant.

Looks like I'm going to end up S-Ranking this game just like I did with DS1. Real challenge is finding the right time to do a Hardcore run. :)

So playing DS1 again (on the PC) just made me remember how shitty some of the controls feel. I dunno why, but compared to DS2, Isaac feels mega-unwieldly in both melee and just general movement. TK is horrendously slow (and kind of pointless in 99% of the fights) and both it and stasis seem slow to respond to key presses if you've fired a weapon anytime recently. On the plus side stasis seems goddamn silly with like 8 charges per full bar and seems to slow enemies 3-4x as long and 2-3x as much as it did in DS2.

Not saying I'm not enjoying the game, but MAN are some of the basic improvements in DS2 huge.

TK in DS1 was more for picking up items and solving puzzles, anyway.
And the strogner stasis was offset by the lack of a recharge. A lot of people (including me on my first few plays) barely used stasis due to an item-hoarding mentality.
It's the same as barely ever using magic in RPGs so you don't have to use the mana potions (or whatever).
And you've got V-sync turned off, right? That makes a massive difference to the handling on PC.

Keep an eye out for stasis canisters (the blue glowing ones), they freeze enemies for a lot longer than your stasis does.
Handy for boss fights, or areas where you can funnel a bunch of guys together.

Also, boss fights with the foam finger are hilarious, you can kill them before they finish their scripted entry.
Last time, a torso jumped down, roared at me, then collapsed as physics caught up with it.

Edit: Oh, you said DS1. Okay, never mind about the stasis canisters then. The general advice of 'abuse stasis for any tough enemy' still stands, though.

Bookmarked for later reference after I make it to DS2. It's always cool to see the thought process behind creating an immersive world, I've always enjoyed looking at early sketches and ideas from developer meetings that allow you to get an idea for where the things you enjoy in a game come from. Thanks for the link.

I'm now officially 3 hours into DS1, just need to finish rerouting power for the ADS. Am I the only one who thought it was strange the the Captain's nest didn't de-pressurize after getting that giant hole ripped through it? Maybe it's just me.

Really I don't think there is really any other gun I desire at this point. The Ripper is fun and the Line Gun has it's uses, but they really don't compare to just annihilating necros with surgical precision.

I have the pulse rifle and the javelin gun at the moment.

I am sucking pretty hard right now. I like the Javelin gun, but my sheer terror makes it difficult to land shots. I keep firing Javelins into the floor just in front of guys, or sticking them into a wall miles behind them, out of blind panic. The Stalkers absolutely kicked my ass. I eventually won the fight on my third try, with no Rifle ammo left (grenades, mostly.. which the bastards kept getting back up from) and a little, red blinking light where my health should be.

I must admit though, when you do land a Javelin into the face of a charging Stalker .... yeah .. that is pretty satisfying.

Right now I am walking through rooms and rooms and rooms of frozen dead people. I had one scare .... I am just waiting for the next... I know it's going to happen .... I just know it ...
