I have a double credit 3rd year class at uni

    It has one assignment

    spanning 14 weeks

it is the most enormous thing I have ever seen on paper

I need to pitch, market analyse design model set for manufacture and do EVERYTHING to design an electric handheld device

I'm doing a compact electric nailgun specifically to tap pins into window sills

I am not a designer at all. But one of my favourite aspects of working for the publisher I interned for during college was observing (in part) the book design process. Now I am even more obsessed with book design, and I have an uncomfortably non-platonic feeling toward broadsides.

    tumblrlfosn1fp501qc8khq.jpg

Also I don't know if you guys will dig it at all, but I really like Martin Klasch, amongst a whole bunch of other art-design-bloggy-things that I read. I'll start reading and suddenly it's two days later and I have a million tabs about typography open on my browser.

i am also qualified to be a designer, but i have slowly become demotivated by being distracted by my day job and many other things that have popped up in life

also the fact that it is difficult to get a job without experience, and the only internship (unpaid) i've been offered wanted me there five days or nothing, which i cannot afford

so instead I just keep looking, with a few freelance clients on the side

I remember studying architecture history and modern architecture was full of self important fucks who wouldn't let the owners of the house change the furniture to better suit them.

I currently work in a building that is meant to be amazing and modern and super.

but it's a fucking mess, it's like it's made out of lego and apparently we can't even put up signs saying where the toilets are because IT WOULD RUIN THE ARCHITECTS VISION AHOO HOO BLOO

he's a fuckwit who can't design a decent cafe, let his ego rot

These guys right here are probably some of my favorite designers:
    http://www.theinfantree.com/work/

Also helps that they're rather good friends of mine. But the stuff that they do is just so so good.

I like that ASCENT adventure consultant set. The aged paper concept is similar to what I'm working on now for a project.

I'm not even worried about look and feel at this point -- it's more of a problem of being tasked with actually designing the interface so that these complex processes seem easy

going from a design sensibility where

interface = being able to access everywhere from everywhere

    to

interface = guiding users through a flow without confounding them in a process that confounds even me

    is tough

It pains me to know that every single one of them is true.

I also have like 15 pages of notes on just how to make sure you don't get fucked when making a contract.

So independent study course to teach myself flash may not have been the greatest idea. Also the book is pissing me off because I'm in the opening chapters where it's talking down to me about how to draw in adobe programs... sigh. Second to last semester then I can full time hate my clients instead of just part time.

Far more schools need to do this. Having a business and freelancing class really should be mandatory for anyone getting an education in Graphic Design.

Our profs always talk to us about the importance of having business skills/knowledge. Instead of making those classes a part of the major or creating their own, we just get told we should take them seperately.
