Can difficulty be changed mid-game? This game seems pretty difficult, and while I'd like a challenge from it, I'm not exactly the greatest platformer, and I definitely want to get through the story.

It can, I think you can change it in the bar. During the Nightmare sequences though, I don't think so.

This game is fun.
Playing on Normal. Its not difficult at all, in the sense of what to do... its the controls. Rather bad for puzzle game. And I compare the controls to the arcade game at the bar in game, which controls better.
Its just clunky feeling at times. Still fun, but its the only thing making the puzzles hard at all. Actually figuring out the solution to get to the top is pretty easy. My wife was watching and she would see which blocks I needed to move and ask why I didn't. I showed her "look I hit right on the pad, but since I'm hanging at this angle he goes left"... "now if I stand up over with the game camera looking at a slightly different angle he goes the opposite way." Its stupid.
Bosses... a tad harder of course, mainly because any tiny mistake means I gotta fight the damn controls more. What I really dont like is how the game wants to keep looking at the boss...which changes the camera angle some and means you might fuck up. And it doesnt matter if I am super good and make progress faster than normal, because the boss will just zip ahead at set points.
Don't get me wrong, its a very fun game. I like everything about it, except the fact that its a simple puzzle game with quirky controls. I like hard games too... I think 90% of the shit nowdays is just an interactive movie. But I dont like when its hard just because the controls have stupid issues.
I really hope the story isnt just a simple choice between the two k/c-atherines... so far its been very entertaining.
I see people complain like this whenever they try the game. Seriously. Like....I think all my friends have done the same thing. It's just funny to me because I don't have this problem. I got used to how it all works and honestly I'm on Stage 3 of the 7th night right now on Hard mode. This never happens to me though. It did when I first started playing. But like I said to Gilder. It takes a bit of practice and you will get used to it. I mean they even mention a lot of the stuff you're saying is a problem in the game. Also in the arcade game at the bar you have no time limit and aren't freaking out and moving around everywhere and pushing stuff to get up before you die. You can sit there and calmly move yourself. So you don't end up making any mistakes like you're mentioning above.
As much as I see where you're coming from this is something I got past pretty fast. And you will need to if you ever intend on doing Hard mode. The only problems I've had so far are because of the damn 360 D-Pad, which GIlder, you are right from a while ago. I forgot I did use the D-pad when I played the PS3 version. I don't know why I said the stick. The D-pad is needed haha. But anyways the d-pad on the 360 is such ass at time. I've gotten good with it now but there are times you press it and it decides a different direction. Goddamn you 360 d-pads.

Yeah you need to change the difficulty in the bar. You cannot in the Nightmare. I propose this of you. Make two save files. Keep one in the bar at all times. Update it every time you pass a new Night. Test yourself first in the Nightmare. See if you can do it. If you really get stuck and it's too much. Load the other save file and change it and move on. Give that a try. It's what I've been doing just in case on Hard but haven't yet had to change it. (and well honestly at Stage 3 of Night 7 I'm not going to.) But yeah.

Catherine has so few redeeming qualities. She's hot...period. She's also a bit crazy. It just seems like a real non choice to me. Either Vincent becomes an ass all of a sudden (and goes after Catherine), or he tries to stay faithful but has no social skills or confrontational skills and causes the drama in the game.
I guess I just want all the main characters to be more likable. I think the support chars are great.

Easily one of the best games I've ever played, the unique mixture of romance, horror, and social simulation is so fun and interesting to me and the plot grabbed me right away, even when I was just playing the demo.
I love the whole concept of commitment and women as this whole supernatural horror to be feared. Its fascinating and the game constantly has me either laughing my ass off, shocked, or waxing philosophical.
Also, the puzzling is fast, frantic, sometimes frustrating, but ohh so satisfying.
Can't wait to see Atlus make a Persona game for PS3 though.
Well I have officially made it to Day 8 on Hard. Take THAT Spiral Corridor! Onto the batshit insanity! Woot! I just cannot stop playing this....holy shit. I mean I've literally been playing for ....uhh....oh god.. it's 10 now....so like...14 hours straight??!! Jesus. Christ. Didn't even realize. I'd continue on right now but going to see Captain America in a bit soooo have to get ready. BUT THEN I SHALL FINISH YOU!

Yeah... I'm trying to figure out where they're going with the plot on this. I finished up the 3rd night puzzle last night before I called it quits.
I REALLY do not like Katherine at all, she comes off as one of those demanding, judgmental, controlling bitches I hate so much and want nothing to do with. Plus I don't find her attractive in the slightest. So I've been trying to go for Catherine hard as she is the kind of girl I like. However the game pretty much forces you to be an asshole to get closer to her. THAT I have a problem with as I want to be a good guy, I just don't like Vincent's girlfriend.

Well the problem here is the game isn't about you. It's about Vincent. He has been with Katherine for years. He can't just act like a douche suddenly and get with Catherine. It's the way the game is. I know what you're saying but it isn't a sim type game. It's controlling an aspect of him but still being him. And he isn't that type of guy. He didn't want this.
I like the characters myself. And Vincent is a great change of pace from other main characters. But regardless. Just...play and you'll see everything. Like I said. It isn't about you, It's about him. You're watching and guiding. Not controlling.

I disagree with that though. I see the characters I play in games as a conduit for my will or an extension of myself. My desires are transposed onto them.
I dislike when games say "you have to play this way" or "this is how its meant to be" I like deciding the choices I make in a game. If the choices are "wrong" then the player shouldn't have been given a choice in the first place. If I don't want to have anything to do with some frumpy controlling woman, I'm gonna get Vince away from her, haha.
I see people complain like this whenever they try the game. Seriously. Like....I think all my friends have done the same thing. It's just funny to me because I don't have this problem. Oh I got used to it... like I said, the game isnt that hard at all. I just dont like that the difficult part it getting past sloppy controls.
As soon as you arent on the front facing plane of where the camera is looking, the controls can reverse for no reason. Its simply bad design.
I just dont like that I CLEARLY see how I need to move the blocks to win, I just have quirky controls in the way of accomplishing that. Look at something simple as tetris, the challenge became when things got faster and faster... you screwed up because you werent quick enough to put the right block in the right spot. You didnt fail though because the controls made it difficult to move the block there.
The arcade game, simply controls good. Not having a time limit doesnt matter really.... the time limit in the regular game is so long anyway ive never had issues with it. I have issues though when I'm stuck trying to navigate back around something I "spidered" around because the left-right doesnt work correctly when my character isnt on the front facing plane of the game area. So I guess in a sense, ya the time limit does matter and makes it frantic... but not because the puzzles pose challenge or anything.
I know it's a long shot and totally not gonna happen, but Bursar is there any chance we could get a patch to fix the volume? I don't know about the 360 version or the japanese versions, but the volume in the PS3 version is as unbalanced as it was in the demo. When it's an anime cutscene I can keep my volume at the usual 28 for my sound system, but everything else in the game is incredibly low. I have to turn it up to 40 basically, and then if it suddenly goes into an anime scene I have to quickly turn it back down. I know this probably won't happen since I bet you guys need permission from Atlus Japan or something, but I just thought I'd throw it out there. I can deal with it, it's just sucky to have to be quick on the draw for the volume.
I'm not going to make definitive statements either way, but I don't have much hope for it. It's believed to be a mis-mixing of the 5.1 audio files, and I personally doubt there's any way for a patch to fix such an issue without replacing the sound files themselves.
And EDIT: Please don't go quoting me on this, no "Atlus employee comes clean on forum" reports on dodgy news sites, no running to gamefaqs and saying "I just heard from a guy who worked on the game," etc. Thank you.

This is the weirdest, most original, most fucked up, most adult game I have ever played in my life. And I don't mean adult as in pornographic, I mean adult as in Themes That Require Life Experience To Appreciate.
This game is incredible.
This is ultimately what I'm hoping for the most from this game. Anime wackiness aside (of which I happen to be fond of, mind you), the bits I've seen in the demo that involve slice-of-life conversations with your longtime girlfriend and bros really sold me. I'm hoping the plot is also P4 levels of paranormal conspiracies too.
But I'm bummed now due to Giant Bomb's less-than-endearing report on it with their latest podcast. I know GB is always down on Japanese games, but their comments about how the game is vastly puzzles over anything ellse makes me self conscious about spending full price on the game.
It's going to be waiting for me today when I get back from class, so hopefully I can put off their comments and enjoy it.
I'm pretty excited for this game. I bought the CE to support the cause, but I won't be able to pick it up until tomorrow. It's already delivered, but I live in an apartment complex so it's sitting at the main office, and I won't be home today to pick it up in time. =(

Oh damn, I thought it was just a simple volume error, like in-game was at 6 instead of 10 or something. If the actual audio isn't mixed correctly that's probably not patchable. That's too bad, but at least now I won't be thinking "Man Atlus sure did get lazy on the audio here. Boy I hate that company soooo much. Mm hmm."
I'm willing to overlook an audio bug with a game like this. This game has so much going for it, that I don't really mind when something like this happens. Sixty bucks well spent.

I can wrap my head around pretty much everything this game teaches me after a couple minutes, by which I mean understand what I should do but fail to recognize it most of the time and only sometimes do it, but the falling blocks still get me. I can't plan those out at all. I swear it seems like some blocks hold better than others in my mind, although I know that's not the case. Night 3 Area 1 said to use falling blocks, and I kept trying but I never got it. I just kept dead-ending myself. Then I just made some zig-zagging stairs with some Solid Vincent stealth against the club sheep at the top and got a route to finish the level in a minute and get the gold. So whatever works I guess.
Quick question to those who have beaten it or are at least farther than I am (Night 2)
Please tell me that it's not as obvious and simple as "the curse affecting all these young men is produced by Catherine as punishment for cheating." I would be very, VERY disappointed if it were that straightforward and simple, seeing as you can basically tell that from the damn demo. Don't go into specifics, just tell me if it gets more complex than how it's been presented so far, because honestly I was really bummed by the bar scenes in day 2 pushing toward that but not outright saying it (as if they're trying to surprise the player and are just doing a piss-poor job of it.
Only up to Night 2, so here are some brief impressions:
Pros:
1. The writing is fantastic; like with P4, this team proves they can create believable characters and interactions despite a difference of culture. Anyone who bemoans it for being too Japanese or whatever....fuck off.
2. The animation is fantastic too; I'm deeply saddened there aren't enough actual series like this, because if it were, we'd probably be allowed an Anime thread again.
3. Voice acting is also top notch; I actually laughed out loud during the whole Vincent/Catherine sequence.
4. Hey, the puzzles aren't bad either! They're hard, but so far not too annoying.
5. Online question results: I wish they displayed a total number of votes or something, but it's still interesting.
6. Spooky: I was hoping for more horror, and this game delivers at least from a tension standpoint.
Cons:
1. The audio: like what was mentioned above, you get true 5.1 with the anime cutscenes, but a much lower volume when in-game. It's disjointing and I hate having to keep adjusting my volume.
2. No subtitles off/on option in the main menu: Thank God I found out how to turn them off (press R1), because I was going to seriously rage if they were fixed.
3. It's not Persona 5.
Seriously, I want P5 to be made with this engine. How long must we wait?
So far, not regretting paying full price.
Also, anyone catch the first (only?) P4 easter egg?

Yay, beat the night 3 boss. The actual puzzle wasn't too bad once I stopped being crap at it and realized they taught me row pushing recently for a reason, but I guess the boss was supposed to be a wake-up call for later because he was fast. I was outpacing bosses 1 and 2 by a few rows, but 3 was almost always right on me. Also I thought the levels were going to be two stages and then a boss, but I guess they aren't always? Kind of threw me off.

It's mentioned a LITTLE in one of the story scenes. Real big spoiler stuff here:
Jonny and Orlando are complaining about having nightmares, and Toby says he sleeps like a baby. He then drops this bomb: "Erica was tossing and turning all night, though..." which at first makes it shocking because holy crap Toby's sleeping with Erica and then doubly so because holy shit, Erica's having nightmares, and only men get the nightmares.
It's also directly said in the TL ending.

So I'm liking everything about this game so far. The bar has plenty to do, which I wasn't expecting.
But as Vincent drank himself into oblivion while receiving background information on cocktails from the omnipresent narrator, I was wondering if there is a penalty to drinking. I believe it said that it effects your speed while in the nightmares, but is it a positive or negative effect?
I am so seriously on the fence on getting this game that it's not even funny. After finally getting off my ass to play the demo, I really like the setting, story, and characters, but I wasn't impressed at all with the actual game bit. So it's just climbing a tower, pushing blocks, under a time limit? Bleh. I'm not really a fan of puzzle games that are timed like that. I much prefer to take my time figuring things out. And from the sounds of it, the only reason this game is so difficult is because it's constantly poking you with a stick going "gogogohurryhurryhurry oh you're dead". Really doesn't sound like my cup of tea. And this new bit about the volume being FUBAR isn't helping. That really annoyed me in the demo, I have no desire to babysit it for the entire length of the game.
Still... ugh! My body is saying buy it, but my brain is telling me to save my money. Stupid conflicting signals!
"The sausage of Green Earth explodes with flavor like the cannon of culinary delight."
I thought the game was setting the Catherine ending up the whole time to just be Vincent dying and giving the player a big middle finger for not going Order/Katherine, but nope--chilling in hell surrounded by demon bitches fucking Catherine while lounging on top of her demon dad for all eternity as the king of hell--FUCK YEAH

My only problem is that Char spoilers from day 1-3ish

Easily one of the best games I've ever played, the unique mixture of romance, horror, and social simulation is so fun and interesting to me and the plot grabbed me right away, even when I was just playing the demo.
I love the whole concept of commitment and women as this whole supernatural horror to be feared. Its fascinating and the game constantly has me either laughing my ass off, shocked, or waxing philosophical.
Also, the puzzling is fast, frantic, sometimes frustrating, but ohh so satisfying.
Can't wait to see Atlus make a Persona game for PS3 though.
Yeah... I'm trying to figure out where they're going with the plot on this. I finished up the 3rd night puzzle last night before I called it quits.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'm not going to make definitive statements either way, but I don't have much hope for it. It's believed to be a mis-mixing of the 5.1 audio files, and I personally doubt there's any way for a patch to fix such an issue without replacing the sound files themselves.
And EDIT: Please don't go quoting me on this, no "Atlus employee comes clean on forum" reports on dodgy news sites, no running to gamefaqs and saying "I just heard from a guy who worked on the game," etc. Thank you.

The level name:
Pokemon Safari - Sneasel, Pawniard, ????
Oh damn, I thought it was just a simple volume error, like in-game was at 6 instead of 10 or something. If the actual audio isn't mixed correctly that's probably not patchable. That's too bad, but at least now I won't be thinking "Man Atlus sure did get lazy on the audio here. Boy I hate that company soooo much. Mm hmm."

(SPOILERS)
Actual game? Awesome so far.
Pros:

But as Vincent drank himself into oblivion while receiving background information on cocktails from the omnipresent narrator, I was wondering if there is a penalty to drinking. I believe it said that it effects your speed while in the nightmares, but is it a positive or negative effect?
Still... ugh! My body is saying buy it, but my brain is telling me to save my money. Stupid conflicting signals!
