Help me find a PC game to play with friends!

Howwwwwwwwwwdy ho.

Me and 4 other buddies are all looking for a good PC game to play online together. We played WoW together running 5 mans and in the same raiding guild for a good year before we all got sick of it October 2006 and quit. In that time, we just really played WC3 together. Now we're looking to move on. None of us are huge hardcore PC gamers, actually, we're not really any type of hardcore gamers. Just play select few games that are fun. Truth be told, the only PC games I've ever owned were of Blizzard fame, and the Half life series (plus its many mods, mostly stick to console games myself).

Well, we're looking for a fun game the 5 of us can play together. We all really enjoyed leveling up together in World of Warcraft, so something like a dungeon crawl team type game could be good fun for us. Does anyone have any suggestions? I really don't know of much good PC games to play with friends like this, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot.

On the free side there's Mu Online, a Korean MMO ripoff of Diablo. I've also heard great things about Swat 4, although that's not what you asked for.

Anything really that me and my 5 friends can play. We're looking towards something we can progress through together, not just a separate multiplayer component where we just play deathmatch or whatever. Anyone here played Guild Wars? Is that something we could consider?

Guild Wars is a lot of fun. Everything is instanced, so it would just be you and your buddies running around in a mission. Plus, most everything requires combining the talents of each profession and progressing through a mission with tact and care, so it's a great teamwork game. As much fun as it was with strangers, I would have killed to have played through Prophecies with a group of friends I know personally.

    EVE.

    1) You cannot really outpace your fiends due to the timed skill training, so if one of you plays more than the others, you wont feel bad about it

    2) Shit hot awesome pvp.

    3) Shit hot awesome pvp.

    4) You can still play similar to raids for WOW if you want. You can also kill people and hear the lamentations of their women.

    Seriously, get Eve

Get Eve now, its free for 14 days.

Flatout 2. Best racing game ever, and good online and LAN multiplayer. It also has great minigames. The bowling and stone skipping never get old. I believe I saw it for $20 recently as well and it retailed at $30 so you should have no problem finding a good price.

I leave with the awesome trailer.

I can vouch for Guild Wars. I played it with a friend and it was a blast. Initially, you and your five friends won't be able to play together, but after a short time you will. This is because the game only allows a party of 2 at first, then it grows to 4, and then higher (I believe). At least the first GW campaign (Prophecy?) worked this way--I don't know about the others, I've never played them.

I'm looking for something along those same lines...
My roommate and I (both poorish students) have been playing WarCraft III multiplayer RPG maps, but the really good ones are starting to get sparse.

I borrowed some Diablo disks (the first one) from a guy upstairs, and that was great fun for about three sessions. Then boredom set in.

Guild Wars sounds good. Roommate has also pushing for Neverwinter Nights, but Micro Center was sold out last time I checked. Meanwhile, all the other gamers on the floor have picked up WoW and refuse to play anything else. *sigh*

Try Diablo 2 (with the expansion!). It's much better than the first Diablo.

Nightfall kicks you pretty much straight into 4 player teams, and then after 3-4 hours you're up to 6/8 man teams. The next 40 hours is 8 man all the way. Also you get to have sub characters (heroes) that come directly under your control so no need to wait on strangers. (In case you missed the subtleties, buy Nightfall if you go for GW, it's easily the best content by 5 miles)

Alien Swarm (ut2004 mod) is usually fun for a day or two.

While not an RPG, SWAT 4 co-op is actually ideally suited to teams of 5 (5 people per element only). Can be very tense, best if you like tactical or slower paced FPS's, but really if you're a fan of FPS's at all, you'll probably like it. Teamwork is ESSENTIAL. There aren't classes in the game per se (anyone can choose their equipment) but people can choose to fill different 'roles' in the team depending on loadout, and if you don't work together and as a team, you're going to end up dead quite quickly.

Serious Sam on the other hand, is the complete opposite. FPS which features waves and waves of mosters in weird setups and scenarios as you progress through the levels. Chaotic doesn't even begin to describe it. Co-ops a blast, definitely.

Hah, those games are kind of a bitch in multi to be honest. It is sweet, but I recommend being in the same room or something because you really have to do so much pausing every two seconds in combat, or reloading of saves that it's very very hard to coordinate everything logistically and still progress through the game efficiently. Also pauses when anyone enters a dialogue, so there's another issue.

Me, I recommend Myth. Old, but fun as hell. If you can get a competant team going, it has some really fantastic coop and team-based multi.

Very true, but the pausing wasn't that much of a hassle for me and my friends, as we managed to control our character in combat without pausing (with some exceptions...). But Icewind Dale is much easier to play together because of the almost nonexistant dialogue. Of course, I'm only speaking from my own experience, so I can understand that it could be a bitch in multi. :P

You could also try the Dungeon Siege Games - I would recommend 2 and maybe the expansion. Easy to pick up and play - can be kinda like Diablo, but not as good. You should check it out though.

That brings up the question, "why not just play Diablo?" I would state on no uncertain grounds that I found the first game far too boring to finish, and the second doesn't look much better.

(By the way, Diablo 1 multi is kinda broken, but can be very amusing nonetheless. The tile-based-ness makes for some interesting strategizing.)

Well if you play it regularly, Battlefield 2 is what I'd recommend (if you all have PCs good enough to handle it)

If you play it all in a squad.... now that's fun. There isn't a levelling-up system but you do get unlocked weapons for playing, and experience points as well. Kind of like a shooter with RPG elements.

I'm not sure what you feel about non-RPG games though, I wouldn't know anything about them, since I haven't played one since I was 12... online fees and it feels like whoever has the most time on their hands is always going to beat you in a fight. That's why I like online shooters - you don't get padded Attack and Defense points that aid you in a fight :P

Indeed - why not just play Diablo? And yes, the first Dungeon Siege sucked - but the second actually is a lot better - more of a plot to progress through. And if you like having characters pimped out with all kinds of shining, glowing, spark-throwing weaponry/armor, Dungeon Siege is awesome.

Diablo 2 doesn't look like ass either (Diablo 1, sure, but D2 is far better and should be played over D1). It actually looks decent. Obviously it's no where near modern games but it's not displeasing to look at. I returned to it late last year (stopped since then) and it looked fine.

Get some Europa 1400: The Guild or The Guild 2. While that's completely not what you were looking for, it's a real-time turn-based medieval trade life simulator.

Half the fun of Europa 1400 though is ruined pretty much through game crashes. So play that one with 2 people or save often.

The original NWN is pretty cheap, you can find it for around $20 and the current version includes all the expansion packs and premium modules.

Tons of content for a low price, y'know.

Then there are the modules created by the community...some of which are complete crap, some of which are so brilliant you wonder why Bioware didn't think of them first.

There's even a recreation of Diablo 1 in NwN, called Lord of Terror.

Thanks to the community and the modules they make, NwN is a ridiculously good value considering all the hours of entertainment you can get out of it.

I'd recommend it over NwN 2 right now. While NwN 2 is a good game that I'm enjoying the heck out of, it's definitely got a lot of issues to work through before it'll be as smooth of an experience as NwN was.
