So, I'm kind of incredibly late to the party on this game but, with Battlefield 3 and Dust 514 on the horizon I want to get back into console multiplayer FPS games and this game looks pretty dang rad. But, is it even worth getting into at this point? Do you guys feel like this game has much life in it?
Also, if I did pick it up, would I basically need to pick up the Vietnam expansion and most of the DLC as well? I'd most likely be grabbing it for the 360. I'm trying to figure out the cost of entry to get into this game, apologies in advance for being so clueless.
Vietnam is eh. There really isn't any other DLC to note.
And I now recognize that Heavy Metal is actually not the best map ever, and in fact just may be the worst map of all the maps.
RPGs/Tracers are still best in my book. Also, started playing Medal of Honor's MP.
I'm not complaining about BC2 snipers anymore. Holy fuck.
Yeah, Medal of Honor MP makes you into a god damned man, and not in a pleasant way. You either harden the fuck up in a hurry or spend the entire round getting one shot killed from a mile away. In a masochistic way it was actually kinda fun.

I found it on amazon for the 360 for $20. I just started playing a week and a half ago.
One nice thing is that when I choose quick match, I am immediately in a game.
And as for the Vietnam content. Well...That depends on if you like playing that era music when you drive tanks and stuff. For me personally, it was a waste of $15. I bought it because I spent so much time with BFV back in the day.
Man SCREW Origin. I will not be buying ANY games from that. This is starting to get out of control. Everyone wants their own store now.
Lol. Now do you see why it's was bad when Valve tied their games to Steam?
If companies A does it and it's ok, every other company is going to do also do it, and we will have a few dozens of stores and accounts in total.
Negative sir, I'm just gonna stick to Steam and go back to buying boxed copies of everything that doesn't get put on Steam and hopefully everyone else does the same (not necessarily through Amazon, but just get the boxed copy instead I mean).
Fuck Origin. I'm gonna pre-order BF3 through Amazon.
And I now recognize that Heavy Metal is actually not the best map ever, and in fact just may be the worst map of all the maps.
Thank you.
It could use more vehicles. I played it and was like "Need Lightweight ASAP".
It reminded of my brother when he played Delta Force 2 on some big ass maps. Do you guys remember that game?
"Bravo, this is King-6. The mission has been compromised."
I wonder what happened to Novalogic.
I actually rather like Heavy Metal because it is a fantastic map for learning how to use the AT4. Long, unobstructed lanes of fire against distant helicopters who tend to move in straight lines. Really helps you get a feel for AT4 timing.
I hate it for every other purpose, though. Don't have a vehicle? Toasted by vehicles. Not in a vehicle and not a sniper? Sniped from a billion miles away. Plus, there's never any competition on the map; one side ends up owning the whole map and completely bottling up the other side. I would like to see larger maps in BF3, but only if they're something better than forcing infantry to run for five straight minutes to get to a firefight. I'd much rather seeing a shifting urban battlefield a la Rush-style map unlocking the size of Heavy Metal than another big, open map.
Some new objectives would also be great, especially if objective types are randomly mixed up. I tend to enjoy Rush a lot more just because the experience is more focused, but I could definitely do with throwing some varied asset destruction and taking ground for objectives. How neat would it be to have things like the enemy team getting handed a couple of tanks and the offense ahs to destroy them before advancing? They may not last long, but it parallels an actual need in combat and makes for a good flurry of activity.
I remember playing Delta Force 2 and flying the helicopter and thinking I'm all safe then all of a sudden bullets went through my window and I died. that was neat
I understand the Heavy Metal hatred, but I'm a fan. Granted, a mate and I love teaming up in attack choppers, and HM tends to be more fun when you're patrolling the skies - though I want to make it absolutely clear that we NEVER base rape or manipulate for cheap points, because fuck that is a boring way to play. Providing legitimate air support is exhilarating though.
The map definitely needs more basic transport, but I've had fun mixing it up with armour runs, anti-vehicle strike teams, sniping positions, or even just acting as the Apache's eyes on the ground by tagging targets. Hell, I even love bottoming out the suspension on a jeep as I desperately tear ass trying to evade the wrath of an attack chopper.
There's also the fact that it's one of the few maps that actually remind me of the scale that made BF2 memorable.
Ninja Snarl's suggestion of a Rush-type mode with evolving objectives would be pretty neat. Like if Attackers had to capture A to establish a frontline, destroy anti-air emplacements at B, then commandeer an air strip at C to enable enough air support to push through and destroy objective D? It'd be a pretty superficial change to destroying M-Coms, but I think it'd be cool. Is this similar at all to the way Brink games play out?
It's not great design when people are guaranteed to be stranded without a vehicle every time the map starts, an APC would definitely help. Maybe there's technically enough seats if you fill out the Blackhawk etc, but we all know people are dicks and never use vehicles properly.
Which brings me to my next point... I REALLY hope BF3 maps give the Blackhawk a chance to be a troop transport and not just a gunship. I have fond memories from BF2, doing high-altitude drops behind enemy lines as a squad, blitzing unguarded bases and sabotaging enemy equipment. This just never really manifested in BC2, and again it would have a lot to do with map size.
Why wouldn't you use the chopper to base rape? It's an intended part of the game and it makes it end faster.
It's not fun, it's not immersive, it kills the flow of the game, it leads to everyone quitting, and it's really not in the spirit of the game. Whether the mechanics allow for it or not.

I would like a mode where a team has to build a base, a new spawn point, where you can deploy/build vehicles that you need in order to advance to the final objective. I'm thinking of a lake where you can use an helicopter to pick up and drop units in the enemy base at the other side but it would more easier if you used boats/subs from a harbor you can build to avoid enemy anti-air equipment.
Starhawk, a sequel to Warhawk on the PS3, has an interesting construction mechanic. I wonder if it will have multiplayer.

Yeah, some of my fondest PC gaming memories directly resulted from badd-ass helicopter manoeuvrings. That's right, they were so bad ass they require a second 'd' to hold that extra wide load.
The thing that made BF2 so beautiful from a gameplay standpoint was when two full teams of good players balanced and played their squads optimally with commanders who knew what they were doing went head to head. It became a wondrously well-oiled machine where every inch of ground lost or taken was so incredibly hard fought that no matter win or lose, everyone shared an amazing moment of adrenaline.
how much more difficult was flying helos in BF2? I fear that I won't be the flying ace I think I am because of BC2's ezmode flying
"ezmode flying" actually makes it HARDER to fly because you can't pull off the kind of crazy stuff that a more complex control scheme lets you do. To put it in perspective, I was doing flips in the helicopters in Battlefield 2, whereas in Bad Company 2 I don't really bother because it feels like I'm flying a hovercraft or something. The BF2 flight model is harder to master, but you're much better at it when you do.

This so hard. I hate the BC2 choppers precisely because of the ezmode flying. I'm so used to being able to do incredibly ludicrous shit in BF2 (and even more crazy shit in the DC mod) that being confined in BC2 just gets me killed.

Isn't Battlefield 3 going to be the closest thing we're going to get to a sequal to BC2's mulitplayer?
Not sure how heavily this has been discussed here, but elsewhere I have seen talk that EA are going to try and use BF3 as their "killer app" for Origin and keep it off Steam...
Im pretty sure EA is moving all of their titles to Origin only (which apparently just means not Steam). The Old Republic, Alice, Crysis 2, etc are all "Origin Only" which is bullshit.
EA is clearly a company that loves money, but theyre making it really hard for me to want to give them my money.
Mainly, it's the start of a slippery slope, I like having all my games on Steam, just me exercising my choice as a consumer, I don't want to have to have 4-5 different DD clients with games spread all over and I don't buy physical copies anymore.
Fuck EA, if they can't compete with Valve without screwing the consumer instead of innovating then meh.

I don't really mind using EADM or whatever what I don't want to do is have an extra BS process running in the background while I play. I think that is what most people don't want, well, that and the fact that I think it's shitty of them to remove their products from other retailers.

It is shitty, but hey, EA makes dumb decisions all the time :P. I'm guessing they'll be back on Steam at some point, but Origin will probably have the best pre-order bonuses or something.

Exactly like Steam does, so I'm really confused as to why people are so upset about this.
Fuck EA, if they can't compete with Valve without screwing the consumer instead of innovating then meh.
Now charging me an extra $10? Fuuuuuuck that.
This right here.
But they haven't said if Origin even has a DRM component. It's really an unknown at this point.
Also, I don't remember anyone complaining when Sims 3 made you install EADM :P
You don't have to install it.
Steam Support is the worst. Seriously, the worst

Wait, youre confused as to why people are upset about being forced to use software they dont want or dont need just to play a game?
