Yeah, vehicle driving basically requires smoke if you want to survive more than a few seconds. On maps like Harvest or whatever it is, tanks end up as Christmas Trees moments into the match as all the defensive and offensive engineers just start tagging everything like crazy.
Smoke does squat against AT4s, but if you're in a chopper then I think they're going to one-shot you no matter what if it's an AT4 rocket with upped explosive damage.
Smoke removes your orange triangle of death which can help if you're backing away frantically. It can help somewhat against AT4s
I dont know why either as shotgun wookie is a fuckton of fun. Since I got the extra skins pack thing I basically have all my normal classes rocking shotguns and all my SPECTAT guys rocking actual weapons. I shotgunning bitches long time.
Engineer is super rewarding when you know you're being a massive thorn in their side- just hauling ass to every hot spot, keeping enemy armor forever on edge and making sure their opposition is always in good shape.
Sprinting through a shitstorm to make emergency repairs to a friendly tank mid-battle, and somehow both surviving the onslaught, damn I love those moments.

Can't say these guys didn't deserve what they got. They did kind of crush us in the first half and indulge in a bit of chopper baserape. NO MERCY.

so this is kinda neat, it serves no purpose really but my CD Key from steam for Bad Company 2 totally activates on Origin (as did my steam CD keys for Dragon Age 1/Awakenings and my D2D cd key for Dragon Age 2)
so uh.. nice to have a backup if steam ever goes crazy i suppose!
But not HDR haw haw! Neither have ever really bothered me though. You have to modify the brightness and contrast settings that are in-game, they're kinda off in a way that any sort of light becomes an intense glare.
My buddy who just started playing a few weeks ago is just maining Recon, so of course he's only level 5. I need to show him the ways of crazy medic.
Edit: Oh my this is worse than we thought, he has exactly 0h and 0min as medic. 4 hours as recon. Icarus nooooo!
Medic and Engineer are by far the most fun to play as. I've noticed most people seem to go for Assault and Recon
And most recon dudes never get close enough to assist with motion mines...
When I first bought the game on the Xbox when it came out, I was all about the engineer. Since I bought it on Steam, Medic and Assualt have been my classes. That assualt medic they have in BF3 will be right down my alley.

Don't get me wrong...Assault and Recon can be great. I just wish people used them as intended. Assault to actually open holes and drop ammo. Recon to spot and use motion mines on objs we're trying to cap. Than add the killing mans.
I've seen great examples of both from dudes. But the stupidity with Recon has to be the worst. Having a squad of 3 snipers nowhere near any objectives making you rather start at your home base and wanting to tk them. And they almost always finish at the bottom of the scoreboard.

Punching holes in walls is only a secondary function of the Assault class. Their primary roles are to dole out ammo, and smoke the place up.
Want to assault a building? Smoke it first, disorient your would-be ambushers. Want to cross a heavily fortified street? They can't shoot what they can't see. That friendly tank taking homing rocket rounds? Bathe them in a cool, cleansing smoke bath to wash off those dirty tracers. Out of bullets and need another way to kill your target? Make a smoke round to the face the last thing your enemy ever sees! Tired of snipers bringing the team down being useless way behind the rest of the team? Help them move up by covering their "advance" with smoke.
Keep smoking them out until they move. Hey, if they're going to be useless, then why not be useless WITH them, and have more fun doing it! I don't normally condone griefing, but sometimes I can only take so many useless snipers on my team when I find myself constantly fighting 1v3 against the other team.
Smoke makes everything better! [tiny]except lungs[/tiny]

Mulletude: Yeah, it's a shame that a lot of recons make themselves useless to the team, maybe occasionally spotting people. Especially since it is so fun to use the SVU with red dot and roll with your squad throwing motion mines ahead.
Carbon: I really need to start using smokes. I know they're very helpful for advancing but I just like using the grenade launcher to destroy cover.
I should use smoke more often, but dammit, there's something about spotting a nest of red berets bunkered up in an attic and just knowing that 40mm grenade is gonna have good effect on target.
Stupid question, but do any of the perks buff the size/duration of smoke?
My main Assault build is x2 grenades and magnum ammo. Smoke grenades replenish just as fast as normal ammo, so no need for extra explosives perk or whatever it is. I don't even know if it works for them.
A single player on your team using smoke effectively can win the match, of course you need teammates that understand that they can use it as cover. My main use of smoke is to blind the enemy, so I'll usually smoke popular hiding spots, that way you make them come out of those spots.
Now that I think of it, it is on a very rare occasion that I see smoke being used effectively against me.

Increased Grenades give you four smoke grenades vs the normal 2, which I find pretty essential when blanketing an area. You can usually get 5 smokes out before the first starts to dissipate, which creates a nice wall of cover.
And yeah, losing the ability to break down walls is a hard trade-off sometimes. But then I remember the pure joy of beaning someone in the face through a window with a smoke grenade, and then the trade off doesn't seem so hard
I often play with my cousin, and I can't the number of times the two of us have turned the tide of a rush match due to proper smoke usage. It's always fun watching your team get their shit together under the cover of your smoke.
Wtf is the secret to the at4? I cannot manage to keep the box on the helicopter well enough by looking through the scope. Is there a lock on button I don't know about or do I just suck and need to get better?
You don't want to lead the AT4 like a gun; you want it to almost follow your target's trajectory so it has the highest chance of touching it and consequently sploding on it
Yea, based on your comment I went and looked at a few videos. Apparently my mistake was even using the box. I was trying to keep the box centered on the target and nearly all the videos ignore it except to ensure you still have control of the rocket.
whoops. Yeah, you don't need that box at all. I use the targeting lines only for long-range tank busting and the box never.

Another big tip for learning to shoot down choppers is to actually learn how to fly the choppers. Knowing the limits of the chopper flight model will help you recognize where to aim, and when to wait for your shot until the chopper commits to a certain maneuver.
Choppers coming out of a dive, those rising to engage a distant target (or avoid other rockets), and choppers that have their sides to you are higher probability targets than if you're trying to shoot at one hovering straight in front of you.
And sometimes chopper pilots are just that good, and you just have to hope for the best (or hope for a double tracer sticky)
the good pilots tend to fall when rockets are incoming which is why I tend to fire below them. You can lower a helicopter more quickly than you can raise it

That's called 'crashing'.

I like the m-14 with red dot for the stopping power and the dot for better long range accuracy. Unlocked the first short barrel sniper rifle and tried to use it with the red dot and spotting scope but hit a guy 3 times in the chest and he didn't drop. Didn't think until just now that he might have had the body armor perk. Might try it again.
So I still play a lot on the 360 cause its just my thing for work outs.
Was sitting on the PC today and said why I should play some on here too. Not withstanding how my my PC rip this game apart FPS wise but gah damn this game is fucking fast moving compared to 360!
Dudes running around willy nilly with 360 degree turns with pin point headshot accuracy on the dude that surprised them. I played super well though as a shotgun wookie but it just felt like CoD all over again.
I want BF3 on PC but I don't want to play against PC men.

FYI, the M14 has virtually the same stats as the two short Sniper Rifles (Type 88 and SVU), as well as the M1 Garand BF Veteran unlock. M14 and M1 fire slightly faster than the other two, and obviously only the SVU is silenced.
And I love them so much. I've always liked the big power guns in BF games (G3 in BF2, Baur in 2142), so they fit right in with my playstyle. If only I could use smoke with them....oh well.

Nobody believes me when I say that they could take Armor and EW for being in the back two seats.

Two things...Motion mines and 40mm shotgun.
My two favorite new toys. And the M-14 for when I play recon. I am terrible at sniping.

Maps like Atacama desert result in one team being killed on spawn ridiculously often.
seriously, though. Nothing is more beautiful than having six well-guided AT4s home in on and chew up an incoming Blackhawk.
a lot
watching the hyper-skill youtube videos helped me learn to compensate, but my main strategies are as follows:
Situation: helo is moving quickly in one direction
Solution: fire in front and aim in the direction the helo is going
Situation: helo is somewhat stationary or stationary
Solution: fire below and aim up as the rocket nears target
Situation: helo is flying erratically
Solution: combine previous strategies and hope for the best
