I'm really not seeing the gross oversexualization of characters here. I mean, Painwheel? A headless, wiry-framed frankenstein? A 1920's cartoon villain? A shoggoth? I'm pretty impressed with the visual variety here. Then again, it looks like a lot of the discussion here happened before all the characters were revealed, so that could be part of it. Nurse-ninja girl is pretty ridiculous.
Anyway yeah, this looks pretty fun. Very hectic, with all the assists and tag team shit flying everywhere.

thats 3 out of 8...
I mean I have mad love for the game design choices which are very competitive-player friendly (natural coming from someone like Mike) and it looks like it runs pretty tight it's just not the sort of game I would want strangers walking in on me playing
Eh, it really can't compare to vanguard princess. Fanservice level is slightly lower than arcana heart level, which is really only fanservice if you like generic ass moe cliches.
Also, to me the character design needs to be seen in motion to make sense of it, and skullgirls makes alot more sense in motion than vanguard princess or arcana heart.
I can see why people go "ugh" at T&A, but to me T&A is alright as long as it is not the sole purpose in the character designs, and is not done in a way that is incredibly forced, like vanguard princess.
I am seriously baffled by how off put people are by this game's art style. But then again art is an incredibly small part of why I like fighting games.
Personally I'm really let down by the Double character. A character that recycles moves as one of your characters in a roster of 8? That doesn't look good at all.
Hey now. There've certainly been a few scrappy startups in the fighting Genre that use this conceit. Mortal Kombat's final boss, anyone?
It should be said that, to their credit, this shape-changing character seems to have quite a number of its own unique moves, as well as having many elaborate animations where the character is distorting and contorting into bizarre things. That can't have been the easy route, so this should be viewed as a conscious decision on their part rather than some corner-cutting method. Konami might be publishing them, but they're still digital download only, and they're still largely a group made of people 99% of their potential audience has never heard of, making a game of characters no one has ever seen before.
You have to remember, it wasn't that long ago that there were certain genres that were basically only able to be done well by only two or three developers at a time. The nineties and early 2000's are littered with the corpses of failed fighters. Just remember, you're getting this:
It should be released sometime next month, I don't think that's far away.
I'm pretty excited for the Double walkthrough that should be out sometime today, she seems a lot more interesting than i initially expected (also the fact she can turn into a fridge has swayed my opinion). i still would have rather had Marie be the final character and Double be the unplayable boss, but oh well. guess I have to wait for the first batch of DLC.
And finally, *sigh*, I'm kinda tired of hearing about the art. I understand that the art style can be off-putting for some people and I accept that. it just really grinds my gears that everyone has to justify their opinions beyond "I don't like it." I think people forget that this still is technically an indie game, and hell the entire game seems less awkward than Cammy's intro in Street fighter 4.

I don't know in what insane, backwards world Dead or Alive counts as a failure.

same issue i had with vanguard princess
Painwheel, Ms. Fortune, Peacock, and Double make 4 out of 8. And Filia doesn't strike me as particularly fanservicey for a fighting game character either, so that makes 5 out of 8, at which point you have to ask yourself what kind of ratio you're looking for here, because it's already looking better than most big name fighting game releases, especially if you're only considering the female rosters from those latter games.
Anyway, this isn't exactly a conversation I'd want to get out of hand and start dragging down the thread again; I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents and mention that, even as a non-competitive player, the game looks fun as hell. And it does.
Auw, Double is recycled sprites? I thought she looked great before you guys dropped that knowledge bomb on me. A real nightmare monster type deal.
Some of the attacks are recycled frames. But they're also using scrapped ideas for attacks from other characters, so we can at least see what else the artists had in mind for some things.
Yeah, Peacock is definitely the best design they've come up with.
She just oozes style.
For sure. I was actually a little disappointed to hear her voice though; I was kind of hoping they'd manage to make her character work all silent cartoon style, with sound effects and musical cues.

Wait. Filia, who is dressed in the typical "sexy schoolgirl" attire, doesn't strike you as being fanservice? I'm fairly certain she literally has panty shots during some of her moves, though not nearly as blatant as Parasoul at least. I actually don't mean to dredge up all that discussion again either, I just don't see how anyone could say that about her.
But anyway, is there anywhere that explains all the differences in choosing 1, 2, or 3 characters? It strikes me that it'd be pretty difficult to balance all that out, though I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.
Basically the more characters you have, the less health they have and the less damage they do. But, having multiple characters allows you to call in assists and regenerate red life.

I dunno, in order for that stuff to start getting bothersome for me, the character's sex appeal has be at that point where it overshadows all the other elements of the character. The only two Skullgirls fighters where that really happens for me are Parasoul and Valentine. To a lesser extent, Cerebella's ridiculously revealing tube top deal kind of overshadows her circus performer thing, but then I don't really like Cerebella's aesthetic anyway.
Filia's character is attractive, but not exploitatively so, in my opinion. When describing that character, I wouldn't start with "sexy schoolgirl," in the way that I would be forced to describe Valentine as "sexy nurse," because there's really nothing else going on there.
Basically the more characters you have, the less health they have and the less damage they do. But, having multiple characters allows you to call in assists and regenerate red life.
I'm curious as to just how much more damage and health lone characters have, because it seems like they're missing out on a lot of adaptability by not having two different characters to throw in assists.

I can't tell you if this has changed or not but, at AX I remember getting like 3/4ths or something close to that (I think I was running a team of 2) of my life taken off by a solo Cerebella's super throw.

It depends on the size of both teams: This image shows the boosts for all matchups.
For example, a solo character gets a 200% boost to health and 175% boost to attack when playing a against a team of 3 or 2.
Teams of 3, on the other hand, do not get boosts at all unless playing against another team of 3 (because the fights go faster this way.)
Im bummed, i haven't seen and real solid peacock gameplay in the various fight videos.
And Im tired of Peacocks trying to do the peacock super agaist parasol when she is obviously blocking. It never works and they do it multiple times in the video.
Say what you will about her design but her playstyle looks really good. She just looks like a rushdown/mixup monster. Backdash putting you in the air for a short and fast air dash looks great for mixups.
Right now my team looks to be peacock/cerebella/valentine, which is pretty much just zoning/grappler/rushdown.

One thing I'm not clear on; on that Double vid, they revealed her like she was well known or something. Skullgirls is a whole new IP, right? So how are people talking like "oh I'm glad it was Double" and such?
Was there a big public pool of characters that they selected from or something like that?

We've had a good idea of what possible characters would be (another one off the top of my head is Umbrella which is a little girl is a rubber raincoat and umberalla)
I think there is one or two others but I can't remember them right now.

its absolutely is what got me into the genre, and Im psyched for 5.
