I've actually read this book twice! Except for the speech, which I have read to completion zero (0) times.

When I was thirteen I loved it! It was like nothing else I'd read at the time (plus back then I was the worst size queen).

But years later when I got around to reading it again I was very hurrrrm.png

    EDIT: Now that movie

    I would watch

I read through Atlas Shrugged once in highschool, one in a first year poli sci class.

It doesn't really get better over time.

Also, will this movie have a forty minute monologue at the end?

her ideas have been refuted many times

and yeah the book closes with a ~70 page speech by John Galt on the virtues of objectivism
In the final section of the novel, Taggart discovers the truth about John Galt, who is leading an organized "strike" against those who use the force of law and moral guilt to confiscate the accomplishments of society's productive members. With the collapse of the nation and its rapacious government all but certain, Galt emerges to reconstruct a society that will celebrate individual achievement and enlightened self-interest, delivering a long speech (seventy pages in the first edition) serving to explain the novel's theme and Rand's philosophy of Objectivism, in the book's longest single chapter.[23]

will make for some interesting viewing

I sometimes get the impression Rand is the only American philosopher worth mentioning. Or at least the only one that gets any kind of non-academic attention. Which is sad.

Now Rawls, that's someone worth reading.

I would like to pause for a moment, to talk about my penis.
My penis is like a toddler. A toddler—who is a perfectly normal size for his age—on a long road trip to what he thinks is Disney World. My penis is excited because he hasn’t been to Disney World in a long, long time, but remembers a time when he used to go every day. So now the penis toddler is constantly fidgeting, whining “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? How about now? Now? How about... now?”
And Disney World is nowhere in sight.

    Haha wow
5.1 How long would John Galt's speech last if it was actually read aloud?

According to what Galt says later in the book, his speech supposedly lasted three hours. Contemporary audio recordings of the text confirm that this is the approximate time for reading the speech aloud.

As has, for example, the concept of an invisible hand in economics, yet a lot of people still believe in a "free market".

Edit: What I'm trying to say is simply refuting something won't stop the believers from believing in it. Especially not Randroids.

I don't think her ideas need to be refuted, they can just be dismissed out of hand as the ravings of a crazy person. No one would look down on you for it except for other crazy people, and fuck them.

i read this book at the reccomendation of a girl i had started dating once

i didn't think it was a great book, but it was interesting

so i wanted to talk about it later

    she opened with

    "altruism sucks, right?"

at that moment i saw a person whom just read what they had wanted to

and taken this bizarre idealistic cash-topia thing

which while kinda nonsensical was an interesting thing to talk about

and just turned it into pure unfiltered selfishness

so it was over pretty quick after that

    so thank you Ayn Rand

i dodged a bullet thanks to Atlas Shrugged
