Well, it sounded like people were participating to the point where it would of been released yesterday. Then Valve is like 'luls, no!' and made it so it would be released at about 11:00PM on Monday.
Which is, what I would like to call, a dick move.
Where are you getting that from? People's estimates were saying it would take days from the start. The bar is almost exactly 1/3 of the way across now after a little over 24 hours, so I think it will be out early Monday. I don't doubt that Valve specifically calculated things to aim for that release window though.
And no one is forcing you to read this thread. Both groups really just need to ignore each other and move on.
An event where they claim you can move the launch up early by purchasing and playing these games would be really lame and drop my opinion of valve quite a bit, if it does end up only being changed by a few hours.
But we will see come Monday.
e:
Basically because the way they are presenting it via the glados/home website is that you could shift the release date up a day or two early, when it is looking more and more like it will just be a few hours. Very close to false advertising.
It's not false advertising, they clearly just overestimated the amount of people willing to participate in this. Jesus, the game is still coming out on Tuesday like planned.
Did I say it was false advertising? No I did not.
Try not to selectively read peoples statements, it helps.
Due to Steam refusing to process my pre-orders (and my subsequent going to Amazon instead), the rebooting of GlaDOS doesn't really grant me any immediate benefit, but damn it, here I am playing Audiosurf (regardless of whether it actually helps, seeing as how I haven't actually bought the Potato Sack).
It's a brilliant idea to get people playing these excellent indie games - after all, Portal was born from an indie game and it seems right that it acknowledges its heritage - though I can't help but wonder if Valve should have deployed this a little earlier; i.e., when the game wasn't less than a week from release anyway. It remains a great marketing venture, and I'm sure most people have discovered a great new indie title!
People really need to get on the ball and play..The Ball if they want their copy of '2 though.
I'm pretty glad I got the potato sack. Audiosurf and Amnesia are really awesome, and I got introduced to some really cool games I wouldn't have known about otherwise like The Ball, Cogs, and defense grid.
I picked up Audiosurf a while ago and was more than happy to gift it out as it is really one of the gems in the Sack. You kinda have to be both a sucker for music games and a fan for twitch games, which I totally am.
Plus it lets me both listen to music and play games. No bothersome script I have to lower my music to hear. Hah.
I was annoyed at the countdown to a countdown at first, as well, but the truth is, the game will be out properly in less than a few days. Plus, I'm guessing most of you are like me in having a substantial backlog. I say relax, enjoy the weekend and play some of them til the proper Portal 2 release.
I'm guessing that the reason why this suggestion is unsatisfactory is because the weekend is a much better time to play through Portal 2. Speaking for myself, I'm home all day today. During the week... well, my gaming pretty much shifts into 1-hour-a-night bursts (sometimes not even that).
I don't mean to sound entitled by that. Just stating how different my during-the-week gaming is compared to weekends, and how it would be a much better experience playing it today (for me).

Actually, if it's done right (in an organized way) the bar should increase exponentially. As game bars get filled completely, people should be moving on to another game. By the end, all the people who are currently spread out over 11 or 12 games should be focusing on the last few.
Unless they legitimately want to play the game that they're playing, and as we all know, that's not what this is about!!!!
Fortunate enough to have avoided buying the Potato Sack, as I pretty much figured that Valve had little to no intention of actually releasing the game early to any significant degree. They're a business, and I've come to expect this behavior from most businesses these days, but it's still a little disappointing nevertheless.

Trust me, I completely understand. I'd much rather be playing Portal 2 right now as opposed to downloading the 12 minute Battlefield 3 trailer and refreshing an internet forum (though I have a feeling the trailer is glorious!!).
Edit: In defense though, my schedule is a lot more lax than yours during weekdays (6am-3pm and I work from home), which is why I was quick to calm down after my initial "WTF?" stage. And no, it's not a sense of entitlement. To everyone who was/is angry's credit, things (...very cryptic things) did point to an early release. They just twisted it a bit and made it a chance at an early release with more community involvement.
Hah I just started paying attention to this today because I'm stuck at work and bored. I don't think I've found out about something and gone from "amused and enthusiastic" to "meh" so quickly.
I was absolutely planning on getting home, preordering Portal 2 and picking up the Potato Sack and contributing because it struck me as cool concept but after hearing about the current estimates I don't think I'll bother. Too many other games that I'm in the middle of at the moment :P

Good, because people should be buying it for the excellent games, and not just to get 1 game a few days early.

That's my biggest problem with Steam.
I have so many games because of 'OMG IT'S SUCH AN AWESOME DEAL!' market tactics that I pretty much don't care anymore. Portal 2 could come out, right now, for $5 and I wouldn't care because I have ~100 games on Steam that i haven't even gotten around to playing.

I've already got a few of the games in the potato sack, if i buy the bundle for myself am i able to gift individual games from it?
Not entirely sure, but I think that Steam automatically offers to gift duplicate games. It certainly does for The Orange Box, and the Valve Complete Pack offered to gift the non-Steamplay enabled games to PC users on a Mac for my friend.

Yes it does

Already own one or more of the games in this pack? Not to worry, you can give your extra copy of any game in this pack to a friend

It doesn't, normally you do not get gifts of duplicate games - when there's an exception it's usually mentioned ("already own portal 1? Gift it to a friend!") in pre-order bonuses etc
Does anyone know why Super Meat Boy downloads an update after you get the 4-19 potato?
It was part of the ARG. Every time you get the Aperture science login correct, it downloads an update for that game. Within the game folder are now a bunch of random code things that people hacked and found out more stuff about the ARG. It was crazy.
There's a few reasons why people got upset, and I don't think it's totally unreasonable to complain.
1) The 4/19=4/15 hints and countdown timer heavily suggested that we'd get it Friday, meaning people get the weekend to play. Instead, it's likely arriving Monday, which for many people is hardly a difference since their weekly free-time is so small.
2) The potato sack is full of gems, don't get me wrong, but many are arcadey games that lend themselves better to short bursts rather than the marathons the event is demanding. I love me some Audiosurf, but I cannot imagine playing it for more than 90-120 minutes straight.
3) There's been a ton of confusion regarding what contributes to the bar and how potatoes figure in. They should have just been straightforward with this from the start.
4) Valve is making money off this. It certainly a better promotion than the industry standard, but don't act like they're being altruistic by getting players to buy stuff from them to release THEIR game faster.
Personally, I like the event better than a flat "it's out," but the execution is a bit rough. The countdown-to-a-countdown was silly, and we're just not getting a lot out of this. But I enjoy the sense of community and incredible shit like organizing an order to play the games in. And people are following it.

I've played 53 minutes of Cogs now.
That's my contribution to the Cogs bar, I've been punished enough now.

In other news, I got a golden potato!
This would be totally feasable if I didn't have a job. I feel jealous for your virtual root vegetable collection.
The only Potato pack game I own and haven't beat is Amnesia but I'm too scared so I'm going through my backlog instead. Turns out Shatter is a pretty rad game.

This is what people need to remember. Valve can tweek whatever is going into this "formula", if there even is one, at any time. This is marketing. Good marketing/promotions/contests do not leave these things to chance. If Valve wants us to play this weekend, we will.
What makes sense for all involved is to have people play/buy the indies for the first half of the weekend, and Portal the second. Sales of the indie games will flatline as soon as Portal is out, and weekend is prime sales time. This way the indies get to roll in it a bit longer and we get our fanservice. And then everybody loves Valve, and Valve loves to be loved.

Except for killing floor, I'll take that.
Finally.
It downloads puzzle files for the ARG. All that stuff's already been solved, so you don't have to worry about it.
It's the same with all the "prelude" logins. It says when you put in the password that the requested files will be downloaded shortly.

When I thought this was an event that was going allow the community to get the game launched early I was excited and wanted to participate
When I realized early appeared to be a few hours early I basically shrugged and no longer cared
