3) There's been a ton of confusion regarding what contributes to the bar and how potatoes figure in. They should have just been straightforward with this from the start.
This is what people need to remember. Valve can tweek whatever is going into this "formula", if there even is one, at any time. This is marketing. Good marketing/promotions/contests do not leave these things to chance. If Valve wants us to play this weekend, we will.
What makes sense for all involved is to have people play/buy the indies for the first half of the weekend, and Portal the second. Sales of the indie games will flatline as soon as Portal is out, and weekend is prime sales time. This way the indies get to roll in it a bit longer and we get our fanservice. And then everybody loves Valve, and Valve loves to be loved.
Honestly I don't see anything wrong with Valve doing this to drum up some sales for those indie games. Some people might feel jilted that they bought the Potato Pack just for this and now Portal 2 isn't getting released as early as they thought, but for me it's been a great time. The entire ARG was pretty fun to watch and this has given me incentive to play games I never would have otherwise, that turned out are really, really fun (and some that aren't).

Totally agree that this is a very cool promotion. I'm having a blast getting the potatoes and playing some of these games. Regardless of when Portal drops, it's neat watching all this.

You know that Portal 2 is going to be a great game when I'm upset that I scheduled a whale-watching trip and Disneyland for all day tomorrow. I'm going to be thinking about Portal the whole time, wondering if the goal has been met. Gamer priorities!

Since people seem to occasionally mention their lack of portal 1 ownery and the resulting gifting thereof, might it be an idea to have a listing of all the people who are willing to gift portal 1 on the first post?

I've got a spare copy of Portal, if anyone wants it message me.
At this rate, the game isnt going to release early but a few hours early anyways.
Well it was going to unlock at 8 AM on Tuesday, right? Maybe people can get it to release at midnight or something.
In a 24 hour period it looks like we're 1/3 of the way to launch, so at the current rate I'd expect it to launch around noon monday.
It won't be "current rate" if the Organization Group works. There should now be no one playing The Wonderful End of the World or 1 2 3 Kick It. We're now concentrating on 11 games instead of 13.

I am referring to the progress of the main bar - although completing a game causes the estimate to move forward thirty minutes to an hour, you have the same number of people working toward portal 2. In fact, less people since now you can't count anyone playing these games "naturally". At any rate, was just pointing out that a few hours early looks to be a very conservative estimate.

If people want to take off big time they should work on the longer games like Killing Floor or the Ball.
I'm tempted to play The Bell and The Killing Floor. Just can't bring myself to buy them. The Ball in particular, the portal content looks intruiging....

May be better to post people who need it, then they can get pm'd accordingly.
Or a list of people with available games from the potato pack as well.

They actually get more overall cycles by going for the smaller pop games first.
By doing it this way all the people who don't have those games can still be putting cycles into the larger games while everyone else is focusing on the smaller ones.
If you did KF first, once it is done you lose those people's cycles, whereas if you do end of the world first those people can be picking away at the KF meter. Thus losing you a much smaller pool of potential cycles when end of the world is filled.

This assumes people won't just say "fuck it" after seeing that over 24 hours of effort results in not even a two-hour bump for release.

Are you kidding every single game has more people playing then it did yesterday.

...it makes more sense in my head.
A better reason to wait on the longer games may be that by waiting you allow for more potatoes to be collected for that game, thus making the whole thing a bit easier when that game's turn comes around.
In any case, my buddies and I are going to clock in some hours in Killing Floor when we can.
I have an extra copy of Portal 1 looking for a good home, and would gladly spend time potato hunting tomorrow if anyone has an extra copy of one of the potato games.
Here's the thing, halfway through today or tomorrow people are going to give up on moving the progress bars and it will stall.
also you can use other sites to see % points, that big bar is average of all the smaller bars. its been 28 hours, and we have 2 games filled in, with 40% average(counting 2 100% outliers). It isn't getting completed early unless they change the game.
It ultimately doesn't matter *that* much to me since I'm getting the 360 version on Tuesday, but I'm ultimately of the mind that the idea itself is really good in that it gives some exposure to some games, and gets the community working together.
But I think that the bars move a little slow for my taste, ultimately. Hopefully once we reach something like 50% or so the game changes at least a bit.
Not sure if it's been posted (haven't been following the thread), but Portal 2 is $34.99 at Amazon for PC, and $54.99 for PS3 and Xbox 360 with a $20 credit for next purchase.
I almost canceled my pre-order on Steam, but I decided $10 isn't worth 1-2 weeks delay in getting it for me.

Damn, any news on if the PS3 version can be traded in or not at this point? This could change whether or not I decide to get the PC or PS3 version with that kind of pricing.
But I think that the bars move a little slow for my taste, ultimately.
That's pretty much my thought on the matter. I look at these bars in the morning, then look at them later in the afternoon and they practically don't move. There's a carrot, but the stick is a mile long so I can't see it. Thousands are playing these games, but there's barely any semblance of it DOING anything.
Anybody have any concrete info on how the PS3-steam thing works.
I'm tempted to just get the PS3 version so the kids will have it on the console, but I'm wary because I'll choke the lil bastards if they do anything that could effect my steam account in the future...

If no one wants it I'll take it. I've been meaning to pick that up for ages since I'm a sucker for rhythm games

People REALLY love making colored bars go up.
