Phone Problems..Odd behavior and weak signal... help!

I hate to make a second thread here about my recently acquired phone... but I couldn't figure what else to do!
Phone: LG Optimus V, Android 2.2
My phone has some issues with applications randomly crashing. At first was just the web browser, and I had chalked it up in my mind to some websites being not friendly with the built in browser. But now other apps are doing it to. Also, I can't send or receive picture messages (MMS). This stuff isn't such a big deal to me as I can usually open apps right back up, and I don't have a big need for MMS.
BUT... now I've suddenly got 2 bars or less. Yesterday I had full bars all over my apartment, data access worked great. My girlfriend has the exact same phone, bought at the exact same time, and she still has full bars. I can put the phones side by side -- 1 bar on mine, 5 bars on hers. WTF??
I've tried restarting the thing a bazillion times now. Getting very irritating, indeed. HELP!

Yes we do. Bought both the phones and activated them last friday. Virgin Mobile.
I tried restoring the phone to factory settings and it is still being a dick. How likely is this to be a hardware problem? Anyone ever had this kind of issue?
