This sounds like my kind of game! I loved Diablo, switching in and out a team of dudes just sounds like hell-loads of fun, and i only played around with the Spore editor enough to know how awesome it is.
EDIT: got one from alienware. oh how sweat it is!

So, I've been playing the solo PvE campaign stuff for about an hour and a half, trying to get my legs under me and I have to say, I'm very pleasantly surprised.
So this game is surprisingly fun and not awful, although I don't see it as a $50 kind of deal.
Dungeon layouts are not randomized apparently - huge negative, especially for a game with a "play through at least three times" format. Monster distributions are however.
The monster traits are pretty creative and interesting. I love encounters that force you to mix up your tactics, and there is some of that.
The loot system is pretty awkward though, unless you really like adding googly eyes to your monsters. Like, enough to do it after every level to outfit an entire team of characters, handing out noses and eyeballs and vermiform appendixes like a serial killer Santa Claus.
-abilities are a little too dramatic. I enjoyed the good ol' days when you could tell what was going on. I find, especially during big battles, that i everyone is using every ability that they have that it just becomes a big mess of fireworks that I should sit back and awe at. However; this may just be a personal issue since many other games seem to be going in this direction these days. I just wish they could tone it down a little and perhaps add spell crits if they want to show off some effects every now and then.
-I was expecting more modding ability with Spore's editor.
-more zoom-out please. Unless I'm missing a setting that I haven't looked for yet...
-So far the loot attributes that I have seen don't allow too much customization. Usually I just stick the highest level loot on the dude...
Otherwise, I'm loving it. also the thread title should have some Guildwars in it...

I must admit I am a fan of this. There really are quite a lot of hero combinations, and as I progress through the levels and the difficulty increases it becomes more and more strategic. I found myself playing much longer than I intended because I wanted to try out my new equipment and unlock more heroes and try the new map and oh my gosh look at the time.
This is odd, is the beta limited to level 10? I could swear a guy I played with told me he reached level 11, but I have stopped gaining XP and can't progress further.

The whole "gotta be logged in to play, even singleplayer campaign mode" thing is REALLY annoying. I did the all or nothing thing to get better items, and mid second level, I apparently get logged out. I log in just to see me back on my ship... and then I get auto-chain-logged-out (about 5 times in a row, so I'm assuming it's on the game side)

After a few hours, my initial impressions are positive. The combat is fun and fast-paced sort of Diablo stuff. The skills are awfully limited, but being able to swap your squad around is nice. I like the music and atmospherics. Loot collecting is always a hoot. The design is slick, though it does pose a few problems.
I want to be able to customize my hot keys, something that I imagine the retail release will allow you to do. Movement/attacking is kind of wonky sometimes. I'll click an enemy to move towards their location and attack, but all I wind up doing is just running around, because the game still thinks I want to move instead of whacking the guy I just clicked on.
When equipping an item, I'd like the option to use it, but not display it. Not every attachment you get works out on your character. I'm not really even talking about the item simply looking a little weird, but rather that there will be literally no place to put it where it won't completely ruin the entire appearance of your character. You'll spend a lot of time nudging each little thing around inch by inch until it looks right, then you get this awesome upgrade that doesn't work anywhere on your chosen hero fella.
Also, is there any way to swap loot between dudes? I'm not entirely sure what the stats will be on any given item. I only know what energy type it has and what slot it goes into. The character-specific items are cool, but I don't like the idea of potentially missing an upgrade due to having the wrong character pick it up. More initial feedback in that area would be nice, but this is easily just an issue of me not knowing what the hell I'm looking at. They could be giving me plenty of information, I just might not know what any of it means.
In the end, though, I'm sure I'll buy a copy of this on release. I wasn't initially interested in the idea of a static, traditional narrative stitched into the body of what I considered to be a largely dynamic, user-created experience. The original Spore started to lose me once I got to the whole overarching plot about the bad guys that want to destroy the universe. The entire game, to me, was creating my own dudes and exploring the universe; doing essentially whatever the fuck I wanted inside a giant galactic sandbox.
The story was crafted by me, in other words. I ran the show and directed the flow of my own experience. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the story and setting in Darkspore, though. They've really just done what I as a player was doing with Spore, only on a more thorough level. They've created an extension of the universe and just wrapped the Spore customization thing around it -- building a new thing from the ground up by stacking all of the flexible parts of the Spore engine together like Lego blocks.
It all fits together pretty well and results in a setting that I want to fuck around in instead of the generic vibe that I originally got from it. There was this weird misconception there that was almost Bionicles-esque in how unimportant I thought it would be. I'm pleased to be wrong about that.
Hopefully, server stability improves later on so I can hop back in. I got tired of random de-syncs and crashes that forced me back to the desktop. My total uptime on here would have been a lot greater without the constant headaches.
Amazon decided I would like action rpgs so they sent me a key. Just finished the tutorial. It's pretty fun so far

I'd also like to mention that actually entering a level is a bit of a weird process, because I'm not sure if there's a way to preview at least the dominant energy type in each area. As a result, I'll field a squad of dudes that I worked on for a while only to find that many of them are going to take a ton of damage in the next section thanks to all of the enemies having the same type. I don't know of any way to swap members in and out of squads on the deployment screen, but it looks like you can switch between the squads themselves, so at least that's something.
Im trying to get together a team to play through co op of this.
How's the search going? I could jump in if there's a free spot left to be filled in the end.
So far youd be the first. I cant get any of my friends to try it.
I am trying to get 3 other people together this afternoon. So basically anyone who can use skype or vent ( i have a server ) i would welcome to PM me or get in contact with me through Instant messenger in order to get some co op going.

Anyone know if you'll be able to make your own heroes from scratch in the full game?
I don't believe so.

So I've played through 2-3? or 4? every time I get near the end of a level I get desync'd form the game and end up super lagged. It takes 10 to 15 seconds to execute any command, and it refuses to resync. I always die. I tried multi-player and got through the first level with 0 problems. At the end of the second level we played I desync'd, while he remained sync'd and continued to fight. I let him know that I was super lagged and wandered off to the side to wait it out. He managed to get himself murderized and suddenly I was sync'd perfect and slaughtered what was left to end the level.
I'm loving the game... but why do I need to be playing on a server when I'm solo? I don't get it.
