So, how good is this game? Because honestly, after Spore being a series of poorly developed tiny games that culminated into one long pain-in-the-ass space game, I'm a little hesitant to give Maxis any money in the future.

Hmm well I got a beta code.

    And I used it.

    And I'm playing the game.

So maybe the beta is longer?

The game is actually really fun, and has a cool story IMO. I like the graphics as well, it helps that I'm playing on the computer my brother made with some warranty money he got, the thing is like 90% old military hardware.

I had some time to play the beta over the weekend and I have to say, I'm pretty impressed. The ability to switch between three different dudes is cool, and I like the way they all have squad powers that you can use no matter which dude is active. I thought that was a nice addition to the basic Diablo-clone formula.

I thought the actual bulk of the gameplay was enjoyable enough but I am really quite taken with the "collecting monsters" aspect. I found it quite fun building my team, or (as I found I did quite a lot) picking my favourite hero and then picking two other heroes whose squad powers matched up well.

Ran really well on my computer, looks quite nice visually. I had no issues with lag or desyncs, either. My only minor complaints were mostly UI related, for example, when you're equipping a character but don't have enough DNA to spend on the equipment, you then have to abandon those changes and leave the editor to sell stuff from your inventory. I would have preferred to just open my inventory in the editor and sell from there.

Also, the beta level cap is 11, and unfortunately that's exactly the point where I started to find things most interesting (almost enough gear and hero choices to play with, but I would have liked to progress further.)

Overall, though, really fun, and I'll be keeping my eye on it. Price-tag is a wee bit steep for me though ($70 on Steam, where $50 would have made it an instant buy.)

I'm in love with this game.

    I despise this game.

Love: Same customization system as civilization and on in Spore. Get to decorate your guy, and even replace some minor parts like hands, feet, eyes, some other decorations. Add additional items to personalize your hero and add stats. Three different classes, with skills based around that classes strong suits. Sentinel is the bruiser/tank with main stat Strength, Ravager is the DPS/Rogue-type with main stat Dexterity, Tempest is the Magic user (cleric/mage/warlock whatever) type with main stat Mind. There are 5 different 'races'... and you can have any combination of race/type. There are pet classes. There are casters. There are melee bruisers. My three favorites in no particular order:

Blitz - Plasma Ravager - Melee attack has high crit. First special is teleport instantly to foe and crit. Second special is fire a slow moving orb that zaps anything it passes and detonates doing AOE damage around anything it hits. Squad ability is a 6 orb shield that zaps a nearby enemy for huge damage every few seconds.

Magnus - Quantum Sentinel - Melee attack is enhanced by its defenses. First special draws everything in a cone in front of you right to you, doing more damage the farther away it is. Second special is a dome shield that slows all enemies and projectiles that enter it. Squad ability is a shockwave that pushes everything in front of you in a cone away from you. (btw, excellent combo to clear a whole room of enemies... suck them all to you from the doorway then blast them all away from you when they get to you... almost nothing survives.)

Sage - Bio Tempest - Pet class, 2 pets spring out of the ground, 20 seconds after one dies another one spawns, 4 spawn during overdrive. Main attack fires ranged shots that heal allies in an aoe at the impact site. (best healing mechanic ever) First special grows a tree that heals everything in the area over time, then explodes healing a very large amount after 10ish seconds. Second special turns an ally (including your pets, or yourself) berserk increasing damage and healing. Squad attack is an AOE Dot snare.

I love this team. Run around with damage shield on Dot/Snaring groups and if they get too close I just shove them all away.

Until I found SR-42... Bipedal robot, fires homing rockets that do AOE damage, first special is a channeled AOE death cloud of rockets. Second special is a personal invulnerability shield. Squad ability is a flak cannon. Destroys all projectiles in an AOE and snares any enemies in the AOE doing moderate damage. So much fun. Oh yeah... the longer he stands still the more damage he does. +5% per second up to 25%.

The HATE: Every time I get near the end of a level my client desyncs with the host and it takes 15 to 20 seconds to do anything. It usually happens at the swarm at the end of each level, and I always die to it. ARGH.

It's easier to program (since they can just use the same server code rather than adding everything to the client), probably not considered that big of an issue since they expect you to get the game primarily for multiplayer which requires a constant connection anyway, and most importantly for them, makes it much more difficult to pirate the singleplayer.

Seems fairly reasonable, at least from their perspective.

From a business standpoint it makes sense. I can see that side of it. And I love Maxis. I eat up everything they dish out. But having my singleplayer experience ruined by lag is just very frustrating. The only time I ever died was due to desyncing from the gameplay. I want to love it so much... I do.

Looks like the release got pushed back by a month. The new release date is 4/26 for North America, and 4/28 for Europe. I've updated the OP accordingly.

They also stated that beginning sometime in April, they will be doing an open beta. Hopefully that will help increase public awareness a bit. I was really impressed by the two or three beta weekends I got to participate in, and I just hope that this game sells well.

You need a key to get into the beta still I believe, which steam gives you when I launch it.

I haven't desync'd at all yet. But I am very disappointed in the character customization. I was under the impression that you chose a race and class and made your character. Not selected from a bunch of pre-generated ones that you could choose from as you level.

    Interest dropped substantially.

I tried the Steam Beta last night.

Very polished! Matchmaking worked perfectly the couple times I ran a group. On one occasion it matched me with another single player, another time we had a full group of 4. Both were more fun than the single player for sure. I'd fill the healer role most of the time. When I did switch out I noticed someone else almost always switched to heals. Good vibes all around.

Do the tank archetypes have any sort of threat?

I read that this beta lasted till the 1st, and then RPS said it lasted till the game release. Anyone confirm either?

Some have a taunt, i think the first you can get w/ one is Titan.

I have mixed feelings on the beta so far, it seems polished yes, but the content is a bit lacking, and the co-op campaign maps at least are so lacking in variety every second one seems to be the same with enemies sprinkled in slightly different places, which is really bumming me out. Also i'm still fairly early in (level 11 I think) but so far it's also incredibly easy, no chance of ever lsoing one hero, let alone 3, even if you do a chain of 3 missions.

I had zero interest in this, but then I saw the open beta was free, so I was like, okay

And I've gone from zero interest to slightly interested

I've got to say, it feels very slick from what I've played, but when I heard "it uses the same tech as spore!!!" I have to say I expected more... Spore stuff in it

Like, I was super bummed to see that you couldn't create your own dude. That shit sucks. I know everyone hates on Spore, and with good reason after a certain point, but those editors were amazing

And they have the same editor in Darkspore, and the same tech, but there's no procedural animation stuff. And maybe that would have been too hard to work that in there, but it really kills my enthusiasm for the game

Now maybe I'm being unfair, because there are a hundred dudes to unlock, and I like unlocking dudes, and I also like decking them out with parts that actual have a visible impact on the gameplay, and I think that on the face of it, this probably has the most customization options of any Diablo clone on the market right now

But like it or not, it's advertising itself as having Spore stuff in it, and Spore was all about creating your own shit, and since I can't create my own shit, or import my Spore creatures into the game, I'm kinda cold on ever purchasing it

Still, though. It's not the total shitshow I was expecting based on the name and the premise! And it seems like a pretty fun game, just not for me

    Or for full price, really

The dealbraker for me from what I hear(because I couldn't get the beta to run) is the fact that everything runs server side, even single player. This means Australia gets shafted again with horrible lag, and even europe if you don't have very good internet.

Yeah, it's not a bad game. Just not what I was expecting.
I have no interest in playing most of the stuff they have available to unlock, I just want to pick what I want to play and start improving that. It was a chore for me to get to level 5 to unlock the first ranged robot, so I could start experiencing the part of the game I cared about.

The game is well polished, and has some fun moments, just, not for me I think.

Apparently one of the modes of PVP is they match you up 2v2 against another team, each person has a squad and it's all about using abilities and different squad members to kill all 6 squad members of your enemy.

I spent another couple hours last night in this and again the matchmaking coop was great.

I find the different heroes very interesting, building different squad combinations. Equipment management is opening up and the loot seems somewhat varied even within a class, so far. Decisions to make, etc.

But I'm not so sure about the actual content yet. The maps are fairly generic and the enemies/bosses so far aren't really noteworthy. It might just be the theme though, I'm so used to my ARPGs being medieval.

Anyhow, my buying this is probably contingent on my friends interest as well, so I'm trying to get them to try the open beta. Altho again, the community I've encountered in the chat lobbies and matchmaking has been top notch so far.

I grabbed the beta off of Steam last night, and I have to say that I'm impressed. I never played Spore beyond messing with the character creator. I decided to just jump into the game and see what happened. I had fun, is what happened!

It felt smashy like Diablo (there is a lot of bass in the sound effects... nice and thumpy when you're bashing things), but with the neat flexibility to switch between classes on the fly. I also thought that they picked some neat first characters to give you. The plasma reaver with the teleport was awesome, and the healing guy that grows trees, has pets and shoots balls that hurt the enemy and heals the pets was definitely the most interesting healing character I've ever played. So, I'm looking forward to unlocking a lot more of those characters and seeing what else they have in store.

On the character creator, it feels like a good thing that I am limited in how much I can do with it. I say this because I'm not particularly creative, so I was never very happy with the creatures I made in the Spore creator. Here, I don't have to make a cool creature, I get to start with a cool creature, and then I stick bits on him for upgrades. My only issue is that I found the "attach bits" action to be a bit fiddly in the editor. I had trouble grabbing the proper controls even with rotating the screen. I don't recall that issue with the old creator, but I could be mistaken, because it's been a long time. Even with it being a bit difficult for me to use, I could manage it eventually, and was able to stick extra blinking eyes or spines or whatever to my heroes, and they're upgrades! So, instead of getting a cloak that gives me stats, I can get a horn or shell or shield to attach wherever I want to my creature that gives me stats!

I like the idea, I like the customization, including the limitations, although I think it'd be great for more creative people to have more flexibility. Perhaps you could add that as an unlock after you've gotten so much DNA or something. You could unlock a slot to create your own creature from scratch, or perhaps import it from the old spore creator.

I think the only issue I have with the actual gameplay (single-player only so far) is that since I'm totally directionally challenged, I'd like to be able to pull up a full map of what you have discovered of the current area. The mini map is good, but I'd also like to be able to expand it, so it's easier for me to figure out where I need to go next. I'm sure 99% of people don't have this issue, though, since I get lost in most games where other people are fine.

It may sound like I'm being nitpicky, but that's just because overall it feels similar to games I really love (Diablo, Torchlight, etc.), but with a completely different setting, different types of characters, a very different and flexible character customization system and lots of shiny loot for me to pick up! The limited skills on each individual hero means that you have strong and defined uses for each of them, but the ability to switch heroes means that you never feel limited in gameplay. It IS like Pokemon, in a way. You pick your guys up front, you swap them as needed and when one of them gets knocked out, you just keep going with the ones you have left.

After a few hours of playing, I've got to say that Diablo + Pokemon + LoL = Win for me.

All the videos released for this game made it look terrible and boring, but after downloading the beta today I'm really impressed by how fun and original Darkspore is. Lots of really smart design decisions but:

    - I was really surprised you couldn't make your own dude, having 100 of them kind of makes up for it but I just assumed they'd do this given the Spore engine.

    - Not being able to completely repaint your guy is a really weird choice, maybe it's for PvP balance but again seems odd with the Spore engine

    - Really need a way to see the full map (maybe I'm just missing the button?)

    - When I drag decorative armor pieces off my guy, is there a way to get them back? They don't seem to show up anywhere after being removed.

Those points aside I'm really liking the game, even the story is pretty ok. I'm curious to see how group play and PvP are going to work out too, PvP especially seems like it'd be similar to League of Legends but with everyone playing three characters (and I love LoL).

I'm loving the single player campaign myself. It's extremely polished, it scratches the Diablo-style loot collection itch, and I'm finding it a lot of fun configuring two different squads of heroes to deal with the various unpredictable threats you face.
