Help the Smithsonian pick which games will be in exhibit
The Smithsonian is doing an Art of Video Games exhibit March 16 - September 30, 2012. They've set up a site where you can vote on which games will be included. Some of the categories had me tearing my hair out, screaming, "I can't decide! Sophie's Choice! SOPHIE'S CHOOOICE!"
I thought you should all know about this. Even if you can't go to the exhibit, it's fun seeing what they've nominated, and it could make for some interesting discussion.
Link is at the top. ^
The Art of Video Games exhibition will explore the 40-year evolution of video games as an artistic medium, with a focus on striking visual effects, the creative use of new technologies, and the most influential artists and designers. We want you to help us select the eighty video games that will be represented in the exhibition. Remember, this is an art exhibition, so be sure to vote for games that you think are visually spectacular or boast innovative design!
We have organized the games into five eras, twenty gaming systems, and four genres. Simply select an era to begin and then navigate through the different systems and genres. You do not have to vote for every game on every system, and you can return to the website multiple times in order to complete your vote. You cannot change an individual vote once you have selected it so choose carefully. Have fun!
I feel like most of the nominees have interesting behind-the-scenes stories and/or unique, groundbreaking mechanics to have worthy places in an exhibit. Whoever made this initial list knew their shit pretty well.
There were a couple occasions where I gave my vote to a game that I personally hate but had to give credit where credit is due for innovation or sheer influence. *cough*WoW*cough*
Shenmue vs. Skies of Arcadia was a tough call for me, but I ultimately went with Shenmue. As much as I love Skies, it's merely a VERY good JRPG. It didn't do what Shenmue did (which is still impressive today), and Shenmue has a good behind-the-scenes story for a museum exhibit.
I also feel bad for picking Fallout over Grim Fandango, but again, Grim Fandango is just a VERY good adventure game (90% of its quality can be attributed to writing); it would be just as good as a movie or book. Fallout did way more, mechanically, than Fandango did. But yeah, I'm gonna burn for that one.
I also picked Metroid over Super Mario 3 and Mega Man 2. That was rough.
So it's mainly geared on visual and tech stuff and the like? As if I need another spanner in my Entry Decision works. So many different factors that should be considered...

EDIT: The Typing of the Dead? Seriously?
It's the comedy vote. I'm kinda miffed Mario, Zelda and Metroid feature so heavily in the poll. Do we really need like, 6 entries for Mario?
Also: FO3 vs WoW. Sucks to be FO3 in that poll. Regardless of your opinions regarding WoW, you gotta acknowledge what it's accomplished. Despite what it is at the core it deserves a note in ye old records o' gaming (possibly just the showcase the might of the ememoh).
Some of the games are lumped together oddly, but that's what happens when you limit yourself to 4 genres per console. It does seem silly to throw just about every iteration of Mario or any other long-running franchise in there for a vote. If you're going to have a Mario display, include a little something from each game (no idea how they plan to do this exhibit, ... still images? looped videos?).
I don't think they should have put any of the Mario games in the poll. An exhibit showing that spans the entire history of gaming pretty much requires mention of him anyway. What would they do if he lost all the popular vote (let's say everyone decides to "vote for the little guy")? I doubt they would leave him out entirely.
By the way, am I the only one who occasionally voted for a game I was indifferent to just to vote against a game I really disliked?
yeah they really pulled some of those options out of their arses, I mean Brutal legend, there has to be better choices than that to put in the games to vote for. they must be trying to direct the votes.
Some odd choices as well, surely they should have put exclusives for the consoles but they have the elder scrolls as a 360 game and Fallout 3 as just a windows game.
There were MANY groups where I didn't vote, but that's because I didn't know anything about the games involved.
Every time there was a horribly tough decision, I made it. It's too bad to know that many of my choices don't have a snowball's chance in hell, but at least I tried.
Chrono Trigger, LttP or Earthbound has to be the most difficult decision. I think I have to go with Chrono Trigger simply for visuals. Earthbound is an amazing game, but I don't feel that it pushed the bar with visual or technical achievement.
It's too bad that eras of PC games were left out. It's not like PC games weren't being made from 1983-1994. At least they broke things up by platform. It would have been painful to see Halo vs MGS3 vs Metroid Prime or something. Speaking of which, Metroid Prime 2 over the first Prime? Wouldn't have been my choice.

I thought the inclusion of Brütal Legend was fair enough. I mean, it's trying to do something different than the classic TBS and RTS (which are also featured).

I never asked for this!
Also: Half-Life 2 vs Portal? Geez.
Some of these choices are gonna be bad, but some of them seem completely obvious to me
And regardless, hey, games in a museum. Suck on it Ebert

Chrono Trigger vs Legend of Zelda
It's like making me choose which eyeball I'd rather keep.
EDIT: The Typing of the Dead? Seriously?
You could also keep both eyeballs and vote for the third candidate, Earthbound. Give a vote to the little guy, won't you?

Except anyone who doesn't vote for Okami does not deserve life.

This was my only real "Aww, seriously?" moment.

Right out of their arses!

This exhibit is a really cool idea.
Ugh, JSRF vs Psychonauts...

HL2 was iterative, while Portal was truly innovative, so I went with Portal.
I chose Chrono Trigger as an example of multiple (and how!) endings.
Actually I thought Earthbound had a lot going for it in terms of the enemy design. Those were pretty creative. Also the trippy battle backgrounds.
ET would be good to have in the exhibit as an example of the Crash. And it has a hell of a good story to go with it (the giant hole in the desert).

that was my only tough choice.
I went with Okami because I enjoyed it more though
And Blazing Heroes/Mystaria of all games made it into the Saturn lineup? Weird.
Wow, uh, whoever did that list loves shmups.
XYANIDE made it in!?
Oh you bastards.
Did I miss it?
Mega Man 2 vs. Super Mario 3 vs. Metroid? Assholes.
What a choice that one is
And no Valkyria Chronicles for the PS3?! For shame.
Bah, at least FE: Path of Radiance made it in somehow.
jesus christ, thats like choosing which of my 3 testicles i want to keep.
The trilogy did make it in however.
Those weren't in the same category (Tony Hawk vs. God of War vs. SotC and FFX vs. KH vs. Okami). You get one vote per group of three, not per system.
Yes, the Atari 2600 version of Pac Man sure is more important than the arcade version.
And no Tetris.
And no handheld games.
And no Apple II games.
Best fetch me my chump-cutting knife.
