Low hits are good because you have to block low. And a lot of characters have fast overhead attacks, so switching between low and high hits will always be a good strategy.

Well, not any more. At least, not at the site that originated it:
Admin Note: We need to put an end to "KFC". We don't need another made-up term like "BBQ" for the sake of being cute. It's not only confusing to new players... it's just outright stupid. It actually derails the conversation when you have to explain what it is... and why some people say "KFC" instead of "XF" or "XFC". So, it needs to go away.

I'm giving infractions for people perpetuating this retarded slang.
XFC it is, I guess. Even though they're not infracting people here, of course.

someone on the internet who actually opposes idiotic slang? Never thought I'd see the day.

So I've been playing around for a while now and my most performing team to date is Wesker(otg assist)/Trish(low voltage)/Spencer(armour piercer). The weak link in the team however is Trish, or more specifically, my execution on Trish's combos.
She serves an important role in the team, being decently all-rounded and providing a projectile assist and super, but whenever I get a launcher to connect, I whiff her air combo. It seems whenever I jump to start the air combo, I end up much higher than my opponent and causes me to miss the Low Voltage L -> Maximum Voltage finisher, and sometimes even a standard S won't connect. Not to mention this means that any double jump combos are beyond my reach. Does anyone have any tips or tricks in this regard?
You gotta follow thme up a little later, or start your combo a little later. Pick wichever feels more natural to you.

I like jumping asap, but not starting the combo till me and the launchie are even in height.

Normally I am a pretty chill guy. I have never in my life thrown a controller. But playing this game makes me want to put my fight stick through the wall. SF4 I get, and when I play it and lose, I learn from it and figure new things out... I have no fucking clue how to get better at this game.

I can clear missions no problem. Gotten all 10 with about half the people. I can cycle through all my guys in air juggling and even chain that stuff in to hypers. But I take it online and just get ass fucked.

Here is what I've observed so far. If I am getting attacked and block, they will get through it and punish me. If I try to counter them (even advanced gaurding) I will get raped. If I try to go on the offensive, about 99% of the time I can't get around/through their block and instead get messed up. I feel like I am just missing some core concepts of the game and something isn't clicking.

For reference I'm using zero, ryu, wolverine. No particular reason, just really liked the way all 3 felt. The one thing I'm really poor at is proper usage of my assists. I can't combo my assist partners in. I can do it in missions, but just don't seem capable of pulling it off in any meaningful way against other players. Discounting that though... are their some basic tips I should be focusing on?

Like with SF4, when I was getting better I would try to focus on certain things. Throwing, FADC, feinting and punishing, bread and butter combos, etc... and when I would lose I would figure out what could have made me won and practiced that. Here... I have no freaking clue what I should be doing differently.

I think the best thing to do is try to get more specific with what you're having problems with, then go from there. For example:

    * You say, "If I am getting attacked and block, they will get through it and punish me." I ask, "Are you blocking high or blocking low? Are they hitting you with a high, mid, or low attack when they crack your defense and punish you?" There are different solutions for different scenarios.

    * You say, "If I try to counter them (even advanced guarding) I will get raped." I ask, "How are you getting raped after an advancing guard? What do they do after being pushed back that allows them to punish you immediately? What other counters are you attempting during their offense that leaves you open? Your own attacks? Supers? Assists?" Again, different solutions for different scenarios.

    * You say, "My offense can't get through their defense and I get punished." That one is pretty self explanatory. Blocking in the game is very powerful, especially if you know what hit range the incoming attacks are coming from. If, for example, you are trying to leap into an opponent and attack them coming from the air, they know all they need to do is block high to stop you. But if you manage to get them to block high a couple times then throw in a low attack, and they haven't shifted to low block in anticipation, you'll crack their defense and score a hit, which will allow you to get in a combo of your own.

Mixing up your hits and keeping your opponent guessing is the key to breaking a solid defense.

For example, I use Felicia and Hsien-Ko. Hsien-Ko's Sepun Bu Swing assist hits mid to high. Felicia's Rolling Buckler has a low hit finisher option. If I call in Hsien-Ko and immediately use the Rolling Buckler Slide so they are both characters are attacking at the same time, my opponent will for sure get hit by one of them, allowing me to score a combo with Felicia.

An easier example is with Felicia's Kitty's Little Helper super, which calls in a helper whose attack always hits high. If I start to spam low attacks and force my opponent to block low, the helper will score free hits from above and crack their defense, allowing Felicia to get in with a combo.

Another piece of advice I could give is to chose your assists wisely, know what they do, and use them often to limit your opponent's options. Full screen assists like Doom's Plasma Beam or Sentinel's Sentinel Force are great assists to harass an opponent who prefers to play keep away and can keep them pinned down while your point man makes their way in. Felicia's Rolling Buckler assist always hits low on the second hit after it lands, so if you are coming in with an overhead attack and have Felicia going low, you've created an unblockable situation for your opponent. Dante's Jam Session on the other hand will create a tower of damage that hits all ranges on the point he jumps in on and extends to the top of the screen, which is great for cutting off escape options for your opponent if you have them cornered.

In this game, blocking for long is a losing prospect. A lot of characters have very fast high/low mixups, or moves that cross you up nearly instantly. Therefore, you should be looking to pushblock them out at the first safest opportunity. If you correctly block an attack, you can pushblock out any time during blockstun, and you should.

Basically, the opposite applies on offense. Your opponent is going to try to pushblock you out, and you want to prevent that from happening. There are ways to bait a pushblock (if they try to pushblock when you didn't attack, they stick out an attack and you can punish it). Also, assists aren't affected by pushblock, so you can use a multi-hitting assist (Chun-li legs, Akuma tatsu, etc) to lock your opponent in place while you dash back in. Many characters also have ways to quickly switch between high and low attacks, particularly characters with 8-way airdashes, where you can jump and immediately dash into an air attack. If you combine this with a high or low hitting assist, it can be extremely difficult for your opponent to block.

Furthermore, you always have to block in the direction of the point character, not the assist. As a result of this, you can use your assists to cause confusion while you cross up your opponent, and maybe he'll block incorrectly, allowing you to start a new combo.

Basically, this game is a million times more offensive than SF4.

I've beaten top 50 people, and I drop combos and generally fuck up all over the place, while they rattle off 50 hit combos each time they hit me once.

The biggest thing to work on is your blocking and punishing.

Speaking of low hits, I've really got to make a mental note of working Hulk's anti-air Gamma Charge into his game plan. The trick is going to be convincing people to block low before using it and not having an assist out at the same time to keep the overhead portion from working. Do it right and you get a super-fast crossup between a low attack and an overhead attack that OTGs the opponent.

And yeah, the basic mechanics of offense and defense win you games, not being able to rip out huge combos. Being able to use those combos when you do find an opening certainly helps, but shooting excusively for those combos will also cost you bigtime. I'd say the majority of damage I do comes not from big combos, but from punishing people for making predictable or basic mistakes and using a super on them.

Ryu in particular should help you do that. His super hadoken can be done anywhere and aims wherever you point the joystick right before it starts blasting. Just a regular jump plus an angled super should get people constantly, especially if they're fond of throwing projectiles out. And even if you don't get the main player, that super will wreck the hell out of assists. Killing assists will win you the game every bit as much as killing the active enemy; people with a really good main tend to use their assists as crutches. Take away the crutches and they end up having a lot more trouble winning.

Despite not knowing anything about Doom and Morrigan (aside from 10 mins in training mode), I gave Sent/Doom/Morrigan a few runs in player matches to see just how absurd lazorz+missiles is.

It's absurd. Missiles + lasers at range is ridiculous chip damage. Missiles + Sent launcher stuffs 99% of any rushdown attempts that get past the lasers, followed up by an air combo or HSF depending on what connects. And we all know how beastly Morrigan + any spammy assist can be.

Also, and maybe someone's done it already, but I have a sneaking suspicion that proper timing might allow for a Doom/Sent infinite (and/or trap). In training mode, even with my shitting timing ability, I was very close to getting 100% lockdown/infinite by releasing Doom missiles as slowly as possible while calling drones assist at the right time.

That's because Sentinel has one of the best, if not the best character setup in the game. He has a little of everything, including super armor, plus the highest HP pool in the game.

In other news I finally figured out a good method for beating low spammers - just don't face them. Seems simple and silly, but if I see that someone's primary strategy involves spamming low hits and nothing else, I'll just evade, charge meter with Felicia, and call in Hsien-Ko to swing in their face and score a hit; this allows Felicia a safe entrance to get in and tear things up. That or I'll just play keepaway with Morrigan, pop Astral Vision and spam fireballs all day long.

Felicia's Medium Cat Spike will nail a crouching character with a ground bounce, and her Delta Kick hits high as well, making them somewhat effective against low hit spammers, but they require almost perfect distance or else Felicia will fly right over them and whiff or come up short, leaving you vulnerable. Her Sand Splash is a great tool against low spammers as well, but I'll be honest - I often forget she even has it.

Pretty much every team had a sent, yeah. But I saw a couple matches where Phoenix was being used, and being used WELL. One where the player pretty much just stopped blocking for 5 seconds JUST to activate Dark Phoenix for the end of the match. Didn't NEED to - was killing with regular Jean.

Hulk is getting some use, too. So far, the most decisive victory I've seen has come with Storm on point, Chun on assist. I don't even know who the third character was. Never saw em. Didn't need to.

Dr. Doom and Sentinel are two characters who's assists tend to punish folks who want to just hang back and play keep away. Pretty much anyone who has a full screen, high hitting attack will do, but beams get the job done the best.

You might also consider adding a teleporter to your team.
