Whenever I have entered into a discussion about Zelda, I end up taking the position of staunch defender of Zelda II.
That game was just right game, right time for me. I know parts of it objectively SUCK. I know that it can be supremely annoying at times. But goddamn if it isn't my favorite, simply because of how weird and out-there it was, especially in retrospect. Same thing happened with me and Super Mario 2 (USA).
Anyway, my auditory contribution - a remix I did in late 2009.
It's been forever since I played any of the GBC Zeldas. I started to go through Link's Awakening a while ago, but I don't know how I could ever stand the GBA screen.

i thank myself every time i want to replay link's awakening, oracle of ages, or oracle of seasons that i didn't sell my GBA SP
The Legend of Zelda franchise is easily, and I mean like with no competition in view anywhere behind it, my favorite franchise is gaming.
I cannot fucking wait for Skyward Sword and, to marginally lesser extent, OoT 3DS.
I had a feeling I would see you post on the first couple pages. :P
But everything you said resonates with me completely. I'm not sure if Nintendo will have any grand compilation planned for the Zelda franchise this year, but Skyward Sword and Ocarina of Time 3D certainly represent an incredibly solid year in celebration of the 25th anniversary all by themselves. Unfortunately, I think any compilation that Nintendo might do would be a pretty lazy cash in, much like the case was with Super Mario All-Stars Wii. However, last year also saw the release of Super Mario Galaxy 2 which is now my favorite Mario game so that more then made up for it. In the same way, I think that the combination of Zelda games coming out this year could make up for a sub-par compilation. They can't do the Zelda: Collectors Edition for the Wii without looking really silly though since being a GameCube game, its perfectly playable on the Wii (and its not like there will be any New Play Control! either). So yeah, Skyward Sword, nothing is on that level of anticipation for me this year. I'm really excited for the Wii MotionPlus controls as I haven't played any games with that peripheral yet and I think the art style is really striking and cool as well. The only game on that level at all for me is Diablo III, but who knows when that will come out.
It's been forever since I played any of the GBC Zeldas. I started to go through Link's Awakening a while ago, but I don't know how I could ever stand the GBA screen.
Indeed! I'm actually going to go back and add that and do a bit more writing for the OP right now to try and do this series justice. I was busy today and kind of slapped the current content together pretty quickly. Thanks for the heads up though! Honestly, I need to get into more portable Zelda too. The only ones I've played myself are Link's Awakening for a short period and Phantom Hourglass. Ocarina of Time 3D is certainly next and I'll defininetly have to go back and get Spirit Tracks at another point in time.
Whenever I have entered into a discussion about Zelda, I end up taking the position of staunch defender of Zelda II.

But goddamn if it isn't my favorite, simply because of how weird and out-there it was, especially in retrospect. Same thing happened with me and Super Mario 2 (USA).
Though it starts slow, Zelda 2 is pretty fun and awesome once you're at least halfway to max level in everything, have a small variety of spells and the downthrust. Also you need to be using a guide/maps.
Then it becomes less fun once you're maxed out with everything and thus have nothing to improve but your personal skill vs. the last couple of dungeons.
I'll sort something out tonight. Speaking of Zelda toys reminded to look out if there were any Gashapon figures out for Spirit Tracks. There are but the bastards have been sneaky this time. Rather than the usual Gashapon capsules they are selling them in chocolate eggs this time. So no easily picking up a full set from EBay for me, it's all either expensive individual model hunting or buying sets of chocolate eggs and hoping to get lucky.
Is this thread the excuse I've always been waiting for to post many, many pictures from my vast Zelda merchandising crap collection?
I do hope so.
Feel free to do so! This thread is all about ranting about Zelda and posting about your fanatacisim with the series.
I myself just got done listening to the Retronauts focused on the Zelda anniversary and it was kind of a letdown given that Shane Bettenhausen and Jeremy Parish (of course) were involved. It was a weird question and answer session with people calling in and discussion of Zelda taking place in this manner, but I think that the people who were involved in the podcasts could have come up with better topics themselves. Certainly both of those guys are very zealous fans of the series and opinionated so that they never talked about anything to in-depth and that the podcast itself was so short was a bummer. Oh well.
And Satanic Jesus, Twilight Princess is an awesome game. If you have the time, you should go back and give it another try. For me, its actually my favorite Zelda game along with A Link to the Past and I'm going to start another playthrough tomorrow as my own personal way of celebrating the Zelda anniversary. I might have to post how much I've already played the game later on. I don't quite remember offhand the amount of hours I've sunk into it, but its and obscene amount of time. As for Phantom Hourglass, I think I enjoyed the game more than most as I liked the way the touch screen controls and all of the other design choices were implemented, but the game just doesn't have as lasting of an impression on me as other Zelda games have had. Still a really great game though and entirely worth playing.

did we already get a more precise date for the release of Skyward Sword, other than 'early 2011'?
did we already get a more precise date for the release of Skyward Sword, other than 'early 2011'?
Not an exact date, but Wiki has this:
In late January 2011, it was announced that Skyward Sword was entering the final stages of completion, and will be released after the Nintendo 3DS remake of Ocarina of Time which in turn will be available after E3 2011.
So, sometime after E3. Personally I'd be more likely to call that the middle of the year than early.
Preach it, though I loved both from the beginning. Just... Mario a bit more.
Anyway, I think the OP needs a little love for Smash Bros. and SoulCalibur II. I really need a new memory card for the Cube so I can get back to the latter.
Over the course of the series, the 2D games seem to be my favorites, though Link's Awakening seemed a little more obtuse in finding where you go and the things you need. I remember having to resort to the screen-scroll glitch in some dungeons, and I never could find all of those blasted seashells. But, I made it to the end anyway.
The first game, I wasn't very good at when we got it, so I mostly watched my parents play it. In that regard, I managed to remain rather enthralled by it, and would occasionally try my hand at it. Wouldn't beat it until some years later, though.
Zelda II was my dad's game as well. Literally. At the time, Mario was more my thing, but there was some overlap going on. But much like the first game, I spent more time watching my dad play than playing it myself, and I was cool with that. I'd beat it myself some time later, but before I beat the first game, I believe. It remains a favorite to this day, and though it has some flaws, I have little difficulty with it (Virtual Console quick-saves help tremendously).
A Link to the Past, as it would happen, would actually be my game, though my dad played it too, of course. It was actually my first Super NES game, given to me before I even received the system with Super Mario World. It had a note from my parents explaining that they couldn't afford the console, but maybe we could rent it now and then so I could play the game until we were able to buy one, etc...
...and then they brought out the console shortly thereafter. Best Christmas ever? Maybe!
I will admit, though, I was a little upset that as my friend and I both played through on my cartridge, keeping pace with one another, that he wound up pushing through and finishing the game first.
While I was growing up, my parents would not let me have a Game Boy, for fear I'd play it in a blackened room 24/7 and ruin my eyes. So when the Super Game Boy came out, I wasted little time in getting it, and the first game I got for it? Link's Awakening, which I described more above.
Ocarina of Time, I preordered, and I don't know what it is, but around the Forest Temple, I just lost interest. I wound up passing on Majora's Mask and the Oracle games, too, though I now desperately want to get the latter.
I did not get another Zelda game until Wind Waker, which began fun, but quickly sunk when I reached that poorly put-together stealth segment so near the start of the game. My wife offered to go through it for me, as she didn't have trouble with it, but at the time, I was so full of some sort of foolish gamer pride that if I couldn't do the whole game myself, then I wouldn't bother.
I've relaxed my standards a bit since, but having watched her go through the game (deja vu), I haven't had much inclination to do so myself. Nor much time, if I must be honest. Plus, hearing about the tedium of sailing around and a bad Triforce quest has not really helped to hasten my resolve.
I forget why I missed out on Minish Cap, but I really want that one now, too. We did get Four Swords Adventures, however, I believe thanks to my employee discount and taking advantage of some trade-ins when I was working at Blockbuster. And to be honest, I rather enjoyed it, even though I had to go through with one player (we only had/have one Game Boy Advance).
Twilight Princess, my first Wii title, has been my favorite 3D Zelda to date, though it remains unfinished. My wife managed to finish first, while I'm at the ice mansion. She was thinking of playing through again, but I suggested she and I play together on my game, and she agreed... and we just never got around to it, thanks to work and an ever-increasing number of games to play.
We have both DS games, though the first remains unopened. Spirit Tracks was sent to my wife for review, and I played it as well. And... it's alright, I guess. Something about the controls doesn't set well with me, however. I feel more like I'm leading Link, rather than controlling him directly, and I don't really care for it. I've heard it gets more frustrating the further in you go, and with my temper, I've just kept my distance.
Despite all this, I look forward to Skyward Sword, and hope it brings back the feeling of the classics, but mixes things up a little-- and I don't mean with a boat or another two-sided world thing, either. Ocarina of Time 3D will make its way into this house, whether I want it to or not. My wife loves the original, and she'll need to review it besides. I may give it a try, too.
Besides some sort of collection of those latter-day 2D Zelda titles (Oracle of Ages, Seasons, and Minish Cap-- maybe 4 Swords Adventures), what I would love to see released to celebrate Zelda's 25th would be revised versions of the Japan-only, downloadable Zelda titles. I'd love to have some new adventures in the classic settings, but with some nicely-updated 16-bit graphics. Check them out (especially the second video, if you've ever wondered how Link carries all that equipment):
I've played a bit of these, and they were a lot of fun. I'd love to see something updated for WiiWare, or even a relatively cheap port to a retail disc for some sort of set. Just tweak it so you're not required to be connected to Satelleview and have English narration/voices, and I'm all set!
Besides, it would be pretty close to how the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. was celebrated with the updated All-Stars versions, and give some of us that old-school blast from the past Ocarina and Skyward Sword are likely to lack.
On a final note, I kind of miss the old days, when Link seemed more like a character in his own right alongside Mario, rather than just one of many. I typically love legacy heroes, but at this point, it's almost like Zelda is diluting the concept a little bit. I kind of miss the "original" from Zelda I and II.
Oh, and an image contribution. Courtesy of NESplayer.com, a folder I have somewhere:

I love Wind Waker. Whenever I don't have to sail. Jesus, I've been replaying it lately and it's such a great game but really...Sailing really drags it down.

Zelda is 25 years old already? My how time flies. I can still remember when I was a kid playing Zelda 2 on my NES at 3:30 in the morning. My dad watching me as I work the last dungeon, fight the final boss and yelling a crazy person when I delivered the final blow. My dad was just smiling at me as we watched the end game. It was one of those awesome moments.
I'm going to go out and buy Link's Crossbow Training to celebrate 25 years of awesome games and good times. It's the only console Zelda I'm missing other then Four Swords Adventures, and I'm passing on that one due to no GBA anymore. I'll also finish Spirit Tracks some time this year too.

Ooh, I forgot about Link's Crossbow Training! Fun game, that one.
As for Four Swords Adventures, it doesn't require a GBA, unless you want multiplayer.
I know, but when I get it I'm going to have to get a GBA & link cables because I'm obsessive compulsive like that. I'm not going to buy a multiplayer game and not play it with another person. But I have been looking on Amazon and it's not too bad used price wise....
Do the link cables work for the Wii?

The GBA-to-GC cables? Yes, they work. I've tried them.
I believe the Game Boy Player is the one that doesn't work.
My favourite items are the Twilight Princess coin as it is such a pleasantly solid and hefty object, and the Majora's Mask figures which are both stunning and took years of EBay scouring to complete the set.
One of things I'm proud of is that apart from the Majora figures (and you wouldn't believe the unsolicited prices I've been offered for those since) none of these cost any significant amount of cash. I love the look of the First 4 figures but those prices, whew.
Story time! It's also the collection that pays its way back. Way back before the launch of the original DS there was a competition on the Nintendo Europe website to win a trip for two to Paris to take part in the media launch of the DS system. In order to win you needed to take a picture of your Nintendo collection. A picture, now lost to the mists of time and a website revamp, of the Zelda collection plus a few other Nintendo bits and bobs, won us that trip and a pre-launch DS! The centrepiece of that picture was the woman who would become Mrs Jam in her Link Halloween costume hugging a six foot standee of Fox McCloud (now long since car booted).
Story number 2. That Blue Link pin badge in the last picture was my wife's 'something blue' at the wedding and was attached to her garter.
Those sets of figurines look for Four Swords Adventures, The Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess look surprisingly well done. I'm envious of those stand up sprites that you have too!

Phantom Hourglass has some great twist "WTF" moments during its ending so I definitely recommend finishing it.

Those sets of figurines look for Four Swords Adventures, The Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess look surprisingly well done. I'm envious of those stand up sprites that you have too!
