I remember when Link was like, the biggest dork in school and all the other kids made fun of him.
Then it turned out he was actually totally awesome and part demon and he had to defeat all these other demons entering into the realm of Hyrule through an undisclosed portal. That game could have used less panty shots of all the female characters though. Geez Japan, we get it already! I also didn't buy Tingles character development. I don't care how much training he had, there was no way he could have taken on Phantom Ganondorf and Shadow Link at once!
That's what Sporky means though, in Starfox Adventures, they outright changed the gameplay and it turned out not so good.
You could do a more sci-fi themed Zelda, and as long as the gameplay stays familiar, it has the chance to be awesome.
I know this is kind of old, but I'd just like to disagree here. The problem with the series isn't setting, it's that's everything about the series is bogged down in conventions that make it laughably outdated compared to other games.
I'd be interested in the scifi Zelda because it'd be a clear indication that they're actually willing to let go of the slavish devotion to design decision made nearly 15 years ago, but remaking OoT yet again this time in space isn't going to fix anything.
Is OoT 3DS actually out or is it just sold out everywhere in the world? I'm a tad interested in another play of this game but its a golden ring right now.
Well, this is embarassing. I'm at the foot of Eagle's Tower, but I'm stuck. You need a key to enter and I'm pretty sure you need the ocarina and learn a song to resurrect a cuccoo to get that key but I can't find Marin! Turtle's Rock I can't get to without the upgraded shield. So I thought about doing the trade quest but apparently I need a magnifying glass since I get owned by an apparition that lives under the mermaid statue! Gah!
I don't know if you've managed to wrangle past your current predicament yet, but here's the skinny:
You DO need the ocarina and a song to enter Eagle's Tower, but you don't need to talk to Marin for that. It's someplace close to home.
Check one screen north of the Item Shop. You'll need Pegasus Boots.
Also, for the trading quest, the Mermaid statue is where you get the magnifying glass. Just ignore the monster and keep going.
Thanks! Close to home, eh? I'll have to investigate this further. In the meantime, I said fuck it, charged through the room, got the magnifying glass and traded the shovel for the boomerang. The boomerang is sooo good. Takes everything out in one shot, doesn't use ammo and returns dropped items. Made the color dungeon a breeze. Am now rockin' a blue tunic.
edit: Ah!
Is it the fishing game? Never bothered to pay rupees for that. I am beginning to recollect memories of a distant past...
I recently pulled out my old light-blue colored Gameboy Color and just finished replaying Link's Awakening myself, such a good game. Newer Zeldas just hold your hand a bit too much.
I'd forgotten how much more comfortable those ergonomic old GBC's are compared to today's DSes and "slab of glass" smartphones, this thing just fits right in my hand like a glove.
I've embarked on a Zelda quest, completing some gaps in the collection. A Wii is imminent, and I just need copies of Minish Cap and LttP for the older portables. This has, of course, led to me debating a Limited Triforce GBA SP...
This is the attitude that has lead to its decline, IMO. Everything Zelda does, something else now does better. Usually MUCH better.
Yeah, well, in my opinion, that's wrong. Especially if you're going to bring up Darksiders as some sort of counterpoint. I had people tell me that was "Zelda, but better!" and I could not disagree more.

I can't remember playing a Zelda game and thinking "Jeez, more of the same? No thanks!"
It's a good formula. Like coke. You fuck with it and there's rioting in the streets.
There goes my idea for a Midieval/Western/Old Asian steampunk Zelda setting where Link totes around guns called "Once Upon a Time in Hyrule". Thanks a lot guys.

I did this twice. Phantom Hourglass and then Spirit Tracks.
Though, I still consider myself very happy with the series. Though I find myself happier when the games have more dungeons. I feel like 9 should be the minimum.

I thought this with Twilight Princess, and then thought it harder with Phantom Hourglass, and then Spirit Tracks came along and I could barely bring myself to finish it.
Meanwhile, yes, Darksiders came out and kicked the crap out of all 3 games.
That is simultaneously horrifying and hilarious. I had no idea that this was even a thing!
It's actually not really meant to be a Street Fighter game. The Japanese version had nothing to do with it at all, and the English localization changed the plot slightly to imply that you're playing as Ken after having won the Street Fighter tournament 25 years earlier.
I advise everyone not to play it, it's a really difficult timed platforming beat-em-up. You can watch the Angry Video Game Nerd's review of the game (from 2010, of course) or any number of playthroughs on Youtube.
Have we all already forgotten about Okami, and what it managed to pull off with the same gameplay style? and the brushstrokes you earned in each "dungeon" remained actually useful.

I think the series does have room to grow. It's slightly starting to stagnate (though we'll see if Skyward Sword at least innovates a bit). I don't think it needs to grow drastically though. Something like Majora's Mask is a good example - totally different setting, but still with the same general aesthetic and feeling of other Zelda games. And it tried some really cool new things, like the 3 day cycle.
That's the kind of innovation I'd like to see more of. And actually I think Spirit Tracks also did an ok job here - the cooperative puzzles with Zelda were really creative and actually challenging for a change. It brought something somewhat fresh to the franchise.
To be perfectly honest, I am crossing my fingers that Skyward Sword might do something in this regard. Setting it before Ocarina *hopefully* means the story will be a bit more unique than "RAWWRR GANON IS EVIL HE KIDNAPPED ZELDA!!!" - it always feels like the series really does some neat things when it pushes Ganon aside for once (Link's Awakening, Majora, etc). I hopeful since SS seems like the game Miyamoto wants to make - as opposed to Twilight Princess which was more a reaction to fan demand. That passion has to be there - you can tell when it is because you get something special.
Someday, I would like to see a Zelda game with no boomerang, hookshot, or bombs. Just to see what they would come up with.
Eh, most people hate the more unique stuff. The Gust jar and Mole Mitts were kind of awful, the Dominion Rod and Spinner were nearly useless, the Canes of Pacci/Samaria were forgettable. Admittedly, the Deku Leaf was neat with its dual functions and the Seed Shooter was a cool alternative to the Bow.
Yea the thing about bombs and hookshot and such is that they work, and they are simple enough that they are extremely versatile and flexible for multiple situations and uses.
Stuff like the dominion rod and spinner, while cool, only have very specific uses.
There goes my idea for a Midieval/Western/Old Asian steampunk Zelda setting where Link totes around guns called "Once Upon a Time in Hyrule". Thanks a lot guys.

After the Hidden Village section in TP I would absolutely love a Zelda with a western setting. Heck, Kakariko Village looked a lot like a western town.
I have no problems with those items, I just want to see what Nintendo can do when they don't have the old staples to fall back on. A whole game of deku leaves and zora masks and spinners. I haven't played Zelda 2, but now I want to check it out.

IMO it's amazingly good. I like it better than Zelda 1 and ALttP.
We sped up revealing it and had Ikuta-san and others try out parts of it. We would ask how it differed from what they had imagined, and then we would fix it. One conflict arose when, as programmers, we wanted to get rid of bugs. But the staff members who had played the old game said the bugs were fun! We were like, "What?!" (laughs)
Iwata:
Yes, that is an area of conflict.
Moriya:
It wouldn't be fun if your friends couldn't say, "Do you know about this?" So we left them in if they didn't cause any trouble and were beneficial.
Iwata:
So you implemented them as you would specs, rather than treating them like bugs. It took some work and you had to go out of your way, but you preserved the spirit of the original.
Moriya:
Yes. If something simply could not be allowed to stand, we begrudgingly fixed it, so some bugs don't appear, but we left in as many as we could, so people will grin over that.
Grezzo intentionally left the bugs in for the speedrunners :P
They also talk about the increased framerate
Moriya:
Yeah. That was the hardest this time. The trouble that the original staff had experienced was visible in the program source code. For example, there were remains of frantic calculations written in it, like 10 + 1 + 2 – 5. It must have been really tight.
Has Nintendo addressed the Skyward Sword issue where Link just sort of holds his sword out all weird and arkward while walking around because that's the angle the player is holding the Wiimote? Is there like, a button that desyncs the two? Are E3 videos just showing really bad players, or is that really how it's supposed to be?

At first I thought he was talking about the bugs that you have to insert in the soft soil, but now I realize he meant the glitches.
So basically, if they left some bugs that allow for faster speedruns, then this is the Zelda equivalent of Metroid Zero Mission, the most sequence-breaking-friendly Metroid game.

When fighting: Just hold the Wiimote to your side like you would a sword hilt.
When running: Put away the sword.
