I enjoyed the plot of the first game, and I had to admit that the sex parts were worth a few chuckles, but that combat system was just so obnoxious. I don't play rhythm based games because I have none. I play turn-based or real-time-with-pause for a good reason. The whole click-at-the-right-time-to-do-your-combo was not something I enjoyed, though if I played on an easier difficulty it was too easy.
I ended up just spamming the fire rune because: fuck 'em.
I don't think I have a save of my old game still, anyway.
Focusing on magical signs instead of sword combat is perfectly acceptable. Many fans even encourage it as a viable alternative play style.
Does it work well even through the endgame? I distinctly recall towards the end that I'd upgraded Aard pretty much all the way, but more and more enemies kept ending up immune to my telekinetic stun blasts.
I really didn't run into many situations that fire spam couldn't fix. It was way overpowered; I really didn't pay much attention to the other signs. I had reasonably upgraded swords, but, honestly: Fire spam. Boring but effective.

Yeah, same here. I'm only about 10 hours in and keep meaning to go back, but the almighty backlog combined with my gamer's ADD is just pushing it back.
I've religiously avoided ANYTHING to do with W2 because I want to beat the first game first.
As far as buying it or DA2. I'm getting both. It's just a matter of when I want to spend the cash on W2 and where. D2D is having another 20% off sale (this time on RPGs only) so chances are when I get paid tomorrow I'll get the game for less than $40.
That is exactly what I like to see when it comes to game videos. Just big chunks of gameplay, not the quick-cut trailers that don't actually show off the game.
A good trailer is fun, but it doesn't tell much about the game.
Anyway, looks super hot. Buying it no doubt.

Everything I see makes this a more solid Day One for me. One of the very few I'm going to do this year.

You can totally be nothing but a sign witcher in TW1, in fact, I haven't played a melee focused witcher yet, one of the reasons I loved the game so much.
I got through using exclusively ignii, I went for the endurance / int talents before buffing the sign itself past level 2, most things died terribly within the first two castings (with mariboor forest, tawny owl, and petri's philter you can squeze I think 4 - 6 castings before running dry) and by the third or fourth, you've seriously weakened even the most dangerous of monsters, and really, even at the bare minimum talents in melee (eventually you get so many bronze picks you'll have all the low tier styles and such) geralt is like a human thresher, so you can easily finish off flame weakened baddies.

Once I leveled Igni up a bit the Swamps in chapter 2 became pretty trivial. Especially if you get the the melee talent (I forget what it's called) that works in conjunction with it. I think I will play some more Witcher today. Like Curly, I've yet to finish it. I've enjoyed it, but I had to take some long breaks during chapter 2. It was a pretty cool chapter, story-wise but I think they crammed a bit too much in there.
Whether or not I finish the game, I'm still getting the sequel on release. I've had that much fun with it and I really want to see GoG and CDP do well.
I stopped playing the game because of horrible framerate issues. This was about 6 months ago on the old PC so it'll likely run at atleast a playable rate now. It was Vizima that caused the slowdown, too many people probably.

I just think it's more like the Aurora engine is really showing its age now. The Witcher pushed that sucker pretty hard, and even then it wasn't optimized the best to begin with.
More good news for Brits! Pre-order the game from gog.com and get it for £26.99. We're talking the deluxe version, whatever that means these days. Pretty nifty.
I can't find The Witcher 1 thread on PA. The search function is broken
I clocked the Witcher 1, but wanted to ask how long the The Price of Neutrality and Side Effects premium modules go for? Considering these are both voice acted and a very polished compared to those mute premium modules i thought i might give them a go.
How long they take to play, or how much they cost? They're each around an hour, maybe two, I'd guess. And they're free, if that's what you were asking.

I know they are free. Thanks for your answer i wanted a rough ballpark figue cause i want to complete those 2 extra Adventues before i move onto other games.
Those voiceless Adventures look horrible from what little i played of them.
They are a little hard to get into, as you've probably already finished the game and become a god of death, and then you have to start back at a low level with pretty much nothing. But they are great fun.

Speaking of which, I haven't been following the Witcher 2 hype: do we start Witcher 2 as a pleb again? Because that would be stupid. I was a raging god of fire and steel at the end of the first one.
When you get to 15 and start to get silver points, do you still get bronze too?
Also don't suppose anyone remembers where to get a book on ghouls in the outskirts of Vizima? Found the barghest and drowner ones but not the ghoul.
From memory, yes. I believe you still get bronze points. This became a problem for me in my latest play through, as by the end of the game when I was getting gold points, I was still getting bronze points and running out of places to spend them.
On the subject of ghoul books. I seem to recall Kaulkstein having a book on them. Did he sell stuff? I think I remember him selling a book on ghouls.
I don't think there are any books that you can't sell back after you've read them. I don't recall who you can sell them to in Chapter 1, but after you get to Vizima there's an antiquity trader dwarf over in the area by Shani's house that you can sell any book/scroll to, even after you've read it.
Don't bother with the 5k armor unless you just have orens coming out your ears.
You get a better suit via the story as the game goes on; by the time you can farm up that many orens that early in the game you might as well have just continued the story and gotten the better stuff.
Plus it's a pretty minor upgrade for the hassle of 5k.
Would the world burn if i cheated my way through this game? I don't think I have the patience to click-click-click on enemies all over again after reaching chapter 4 last time. But the world they created was pretty great and if anything, I want a save for the sequel.
Yeah anytime you see any runes or meteorites in a shop, buy them up. The forged stuff is much better and you can customize things to what you want.
Your money will go there, books, and materials for potions and stuff that you can't really farm up that efficiently.
I runed up my stuff for the first 2 acts. But once I hit act 3, I got some decent swords and eventually worked my way up to the Moon Blade and the Rune Sihil.
Why waste money on forged steel swords when only one of them is worth it and you can get one nearly as good for free in the Act 2 swamps? On the other hand, it cost a lot but I found the second armor's extra 10% damage reduction and pain and other resistances pretty useful, especially since you don't get the last armor for three more chapters.
If you pick up and sell pretty much everything, including bread and useless things, you can get quite a bit of money. Also, I've found that it's much better just to wait until you get the quest swords, as pretty much nothing is better than them. There's the +100 damage (or -100 armor, can't remember which), which the bounty hunter has, and you can get from
doing all the boxing tournaments, and then beating the guy in the swamp after vizima burns, and taking his tooth to the dentist. He's in a tower alongside the wall towards the destroyed part. Also, I remember that you can get a really good silver sword (+100 damage) by taking stuff to the monks in the swamp at that point. But I prefer to stick with the Lady of the Lake sword.
Stupid unique plant, I just wanted to explore the swamp and help an old man ;_;
Plants hate fire. I had a tough time there too until I realized that.
I had so much trouble trying to nail that fight (was on hard), but after I left it and came back to it after a long hiatus, it went down soon enough.
Basically:
1) The majority of its damage actually comes from the acidic poison it uses, which will continue damaging you even if you run away, so make sure to down a potion for that ahead of the fight, as well as a Swallow potion. I think it's acid anyway, could just be a regular poison. Either way, you'll want to drink the appropriate potion beforehand.
2) It does a lot of damage nonetheless, but if you back off you can give yourself time to heal, problem is it will as well, and it'll be firing thorns at you the whole time. The trick is, there's a couple of trees nearby that if you line up behind them, the thorns won't be able to hit you (and if you're facing the plant and have the trait for deflecting arrows, that applies here as well). Eventually (this takes a while but it DOES happen), it'll run out of thorns and sit there unable to attack you. So then you can freely hit it and back off to regain health after that. Just remember it regens health as well over time, which brings in the last point.
3) Plants hate fire.
Originally I tried to burn it with Igni, but my Igni spell level was pretty much undeveloped. But then I remembered I had a spare torch for cave exploring, and out of desperation I tried that. Even without being able to use combos, literally one or two whacks sets the thing on fire and burning, and then you can just run away and wait it out. Eventually it'll stop burning but then you can just run back and hit it again to let the fire do its work.
Really, once I figured out to use the torch and set it on fire, the fight was easy. Just be wary of its high damage and its thorns.
Gonna have to give 1 another try one of these days before 2 comes out. It's one of those titles that, for whatever reason, I could never get past the initial 2 hours on. I've tried a few times, but there's something about the combat in 1 that didn't click with me. It's been a while, though. Might be time to tack it onto the to-game list as 2 looks promising.

I haven't found anyone who will buy them and they take up a lot of space so wouldn't mind dropping them.
Also don't buy the books until you've searched all the houses in the village, you find quite a few of the books lying around in boxes and drawers

Also when it comes to steel and silver swords I imagine reforging the basic witcher swords makes them much better rather than picking up new mains.

Only done a couple of sidequests in the temple quarter and thought I'd explore, guess it's back to save some hookers.
