Okay I can't believe I have played this far and still have a noob question about Abilities.
What are the prerequisites for each ability? Do I have to get every single one of the abilities linked to the next one, or is it sufficient that I get one ability to get the next linked one? For example, I can get Parry by just putting one point in the Vitality upgrade? Or do I need all three?
Is there any reason to keep items that are "junk"? I assume not.
If not, is there a quick way to sell them? I didn't see a "junk" filter. I find it difficult to sell things after selling a lot of stuff at one time because it shows the history of everything you sold in that blinding white text that overlaps your inventory screen, making it rather hard to tell what you are reading.
Getting used to the combat is putting me more on the Sword path. Currently pimped out with Hunter Armour and Jagged Blade, runed out.
What is an effective tactic for Signs? I almost only ever use Aard. Yrden only hits one enemy, while I roll around often enough to not need Quen so much. Does Axii ever fail?
It doesn't fail, but it can be interrupted.
1) You get hit before it completes. You'll be stunning your target while it's going, so you just have to make sure the other dudes won't smack you while you're doing it. I don't have much trouble with that.
2) You try to Axii someone already Axii'd. So far as I can tell, all that does is drain a vigor and remove the Axii effect.
3) You don't "hit" them with it when you're targeting. There's a maximum range (it's actually pretty far out but I don't think you can Axii someone really far away.) All the signs also seem to not work well with unlevel terrain. I *think* you can use alt to lock before using the sign to negate that, but I haven't checked it. (damn work).
On going through a tree, you only have to be connected by one line.

Man, I love this game but the giant black bars I get on my 4:3 monitor drives me nuts. I really hope that CD-project manages to patch in a fix for that one.
oh man chapter 2 is looking sweet as hell, tons and tons of quests and tons and tons of books to buy, i just spent my entire earnings from flotsam on this one bookstore.
question for anyone whos in chapter 2
is it different depending on who you choose? i picked iorveth and we wound up in the middle of the mist and then in vergan, interested to know what goes on when you pick roach, iorveth seemed like the right choice to me with what he was saying, roach just wanted to take out the commander, which i wanted to as well and was kinda pissed he got away but hey, he was gonna burn hot elf chicks and geralt aint down with that shit. 8-)
Just out of the prologue into Chapter 1 but it feels like I have quite alot of orens in relation to the cost of things. About 23k. Bought out all of the books and designs I ran into in flotsam and it barely made a dent.
Are you just unlikely to need much cash or are there big purchases down the road?
update: Oh, guess it all came from the import save I used. Hmm, that might make things a bit screwy.

it looks like its a bug with that, some imports are giving people like 250,000 almost, even if they didnt have that at the end of witcher 1, i only got like 200 orens and i had 17,000 at the end, could done with it to be fair and it wouldnt of unbalanced anything.. 250,000 will though.
I have 245,000 orens and I don't regret it one bit. Hello, shopkeep. I'll buy everything.
Man I am doing obscene things to the critters in chapter one this time through. My favorite trick is to charm the last person alive and shank them in the back when they obediently turn around. Splorch!
I'm keeping my money pretty low. I actually didn't import a save, so I'm just rolling with what the game has to offer. I don't feel like the amount I'm getting is excessive at all, but I do go and buy a new recipe or crafting and such as soon as I get 300+ orens.
That's not really the smart way to go though. I'm finding a lot of things I've bought or crafted while questing. Still, I don't mind. It's fun. Next playthrough will be different though.
I do wish you could just learn the schematics/recipes etc for alchemy and crafting. I noticed that if you sold a recipe for a potion you no longer have the ability to make it.
That and how did they manage to make all those inventory tabs and not make one for the junk items?
About the dragon on the bridge: there's no pop-up for it, but you can evade it using right-click to dodge. Makes that part way easier.
I'm using all the signs regularly now except igni, which just doesn't do enough damage to be worthwhile so far. But I did just upgrade it (at the beginning of chapter 2) so I'll give it another whirl soon.
I'm really glad I learned about that save file thing. My menus were starting to take forever to come up.
When I first bought the game 12am tuesday morning I was thinking "I'll play now, sleep after work," but I didn't. But last night I did. Not a wink of sleep. Hope I make it through work now....
The quest where you're supposed to kill the tentacle monster in Floatsam. I was told I was to go down in a cave and find an ingredient (Ostmurk) for a mongoose potion. I did, but I can't prepare the potion. Am I missing some other mysterious ingredient? The questmarker just asks for me to prepare the potion but I'm clearly missing something here since I can't

I try to mitigate the effect of that glitch by spending a lot of orens on whores.
The beartraps in the woods are nearly roll-tier. They are reusable, never break, free, and there are about 30~ of them in total. Pretty much nothing can survive passing over all of them.

That potion has two standard ingredients as well. You're probably missing one of those.

The only thing better than the beartraps is using them to make other, better traps.
About the potion (chapter 1 spoilers, I guess, kind of)
To make the mongoose potion you'll need ingredients besides the one you get in the cave, but you also don't need the potion to beat the boss.
Mutagens and armor mods , can't be removed or overwritten? Also the savegame thing. Hope these gets patched out quick. Lastly, anyone else feel their swords don't have enough range to avoid getting poked at least once or twice by everything under the sun. Maybe its cause my pc isn't exactly up to snuff on this.

Did everyone get that seal-emblazoned letter in every copy? Neat bonus.
what do you do with mutagens? i cant seem to equip them at all?
Certain Abilities have a slot for a mutagen. Once you have put at least one point into said Ability, you can place a mutagen there too. Keep in mind the mutagen is permanent.

Do you know how many abilities have slots? I have a basic one, but since I can't replace it, I'm not sure if I want to use it.

I'm at level 15 (IIRC) and I have three unused greater mutagens in my inventory, having only unlocked two abilities with mutagen slots. My suggestion would be to wait until you have a greater one.
I just got destroyed by some Nekkers in the forest. Serves me right for making like a fire breathing cockerel and blowing my vigor on Igni when Quen was down.
The next OP should be all about Plows and the various ways players will learn to use them.

I know. Sort of a funny bug.
I find 2 quick attacks to stagger an opponent followed by a dodge roll into a heavy attack ruins everyone that doesn't have a shield.

I think I ran around the forest barefoot for a few hours before noticing.

I wish there was a demo though, because it also looks amazing and I'm not sure if I will be able to run it satisfyingly...

Supposedly there will be a demo sometime post release.
What are your PC specs? The game seems to run very well, even on less than stellar systems.
Low-Medium settings, but hey.
Processor?
AMD Athlon 64.
