It could be better: PS3 Changes Wishlist

Is there a good collection of people's gripes on the internet about the PS3 - more specifically the firmware and hardware/ PSN ecosystem? I remember reading and contributing to a equivalent list for the 360. Maybe we can start one here, or clear up misconceptions about non-issues.

I finally got to really get into the nitty gritty with a unit and had some questions / concerns. Keep in mind I've been using the 360 for a good while now:

#1. Can you NOT browse the store items by rating / release date / anything other than Alphabetically Down or Sony created "~20 recent releases"?

This is absurd and I can't believe it's been this way since 2006.

#2. Equally bad - can you NOT browse your list of installed games / demos ALPHABETICALLY?! All I get are Creation Date and the (doesnt' do anything for me) Format options.

How did they manage to swap these sorting options? iPods have had better sorting for years.

#3. Is there no way to prevent someone from playing on your profile ("user") and thus accumulating trophies or using your saves or doing whatever else?

No passcodes like the 360? I understand you can lock out the PSN - but that's ONLY preventing purchases and online play. Not everything.

#4. The official PS3 remote - I didn't realize it at the time, but because it's bluetooth - no chance of controlling the TV as well, which means I STILL have to use 2 remotes - unlike the 360's official remote which is all-in-one.

#5. Separate downloading and installing is awful. Not being able to do anything whilst a game installs (even a small demo) is even worse.

#6. Lack of detailed download management like the 360. I want to be able to rearrange download order on the fly, any item to any position.

#7. The store organization seems kinda terrible in general. Arriving at a title via one category (ie, Demos), there is no link to show you the other items for that title. I think only if you navigate a very specific way will you see all downloads related to a title.

#8. Extra button presses to start a title downloading and then into the background is annoying. Who wouldn't want background downloading? "No thanks, I'll just stay here on the store page and watch it download, and then manually navigate out back to the XMB to play it." Automatic background download and continue shopping, please.

#9. Filter out the PSP content in the PS Store by option, please.

Balance: What I do love is the detailed and more finnicky series of options with a lot of the stuff in the menus - triangle button stuff and such. It's just organized poorly.

SEARCH in the store is a great idea - 360 should have this.

QUESTION: I'm under the impression that since I have 720p and 1080i checked off in the settings, the 360 spits out EVERYTHING at 1080i (the highest one I checked...), but I'm hearing something about how the PS3, with multiple options checked, will spit out either 720p or 1080i, depending on source material? ie, all blu-rays at 1080i, but games are back and forth...?

#1. Can you NOT browse the store items by rating / release date / anything other than Alphabetically Down or Sony created "~20 recent releases"?

True, though ratings are mostly shit. I generally use the search.

#2. Equally bad - can you NOT browse your list of installed games / demos ALPHABETICALLY?! All I get are Creation Date and the (doesnt' do anything for me) Format options.

I guess not, though I never longed for this. I have mine sorted so that the game I played most recently is at the top and the oldest is as the bottom.

#3. Is there no way to prevent someone from playing on your profile ("user") and thus accumulating trophies or using your saves or doing whatever else?

Don't know. I've never had a need or want for this feature. Perhaps I will when my kids get older.

#4. The official PS3 remote - I didn't realize it at the time, but because it's bluetooth - no chance of controlling the TV as well, which means I STILL have to use 2 remotes - unlike the 360's official remote which is all-in-one.

I like the bluetooth remote since I can change the music while in almost any room in my house. But there are third party remotes (like harmony) that can control the ps3 via a ir-usb adapter that plugs into the ps3. (Some actually look built in)

#5. Separate downloading and installing is awful. Not being able to do anything whilst a game installs (even a small demo) is even worse.

Agreed. This is my biggest complaint and annoyance.

#6. Lack of detailed download management like the 360. I want to be able to rearrange download order on the fly, any item to any position.

Normally I wouldn't care about this but I can see how this would be frustrating if I was "new" to the party.

#7. The store organization seems kinda terrible in general. Arriving at a title via one category (ie, Demos), there is no link to show you the other items for that title. I think only if you navigate a very specific way will you see all downloads related to a title.

    Yes its not ideal.

#8. Extra button presses to start a title downloading and then into the background is annoying. Who wouldn't want background downloading? "No thanks, I'll just stay here on the store page and watch it download, and then manually navigate out back to the XMB to play it." Automatic background download and continue shopping, please.

Actually one benefit of not background downloading is that it will automatically install when its finished downloading. I use this at times. (I'll set it to download and go do something else, that way its installed when I get back)

#9. Filter out the PSP content in the PS Store by option, please.

    Agreed this would be nice.

I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

The 360 has a built in scaler I believe so all the stuff is scaled up down to whatever you set the tv too (with the exception of dvds if you aren't going over vga/hdmi).

PS3 doesn't have the scaler built in so the native res of the games/bluray is what you get (or as close as your tv can approximate).

Also I now appreciate how much you can do with Xbox Live from the website on a PC. Queuing downloads, adding friends, etc etc.

    Shame on you, PSN.

Double shame for requiring a stupid fucking application (Media Go) to browse the PSP store, and not browse the PS3 store whatsoever.

R2/L2 vs. R1/L1 remapping in every game. No exceptions. Should be retroactively patched in the A-list titles like Uncharted 1.

Copy XBL's party system right up to the point where you're skirting lawsuit territory. Leave out the frequent drops, of course.

Allow us to turn off the blinding blue strobe light on the Eye camera, please. Granted, I took care of it already with electrical tape, but I really shouldn't have to resort to that.

A couple more USB ports, please?

Not making me update the system every time I turn it on would be kind of nice, too. I know, you're in a tough spot because you started a pissing contest with some hackers and now you're racing to plug security holes. But how is that my problem as a consumer?

All of these complaints pale heavily in the face of how awful the XMB is, notably the lack of a party system and cross-game voice chat and how incredibly slow the XMB interface works.

Sony needs to just like...go to ground level and rebuild that shit. I love their system, but that stuff drives me nuts.

When I got my PS3, I gotta say I was pretty gobsmacked that the controller doesn't charge when the system is off. And don't give me the "Well the system is off doofus" reason. The system is technically still drawing a small amount of power. And besides, the 360 does this, drawing enough power to charge the controller, and then properly shutting off when it's done. The only saving grace this has is that thanks to the location of my PS3 (hooked up to my computer monitor and basically 10 inches away), it's not a big deal to have the cable plugged in during play. But the fact that it must be plugged in during play, or otherwise have the system idling to charge? Bloody fucking retarded.

Yeah, I think that's asking a bit too much. You realise all the current PS3 games rely on the XMB OS, right? 'Rebuilding that shit' would suddenly make those games not work so well, if at all. This is why the in-game XMB is so slow and there's no cross game voice chat. It wasn't designed for those features and while they've managed to get around problems to get the in-game XMB working, the same can't obviously be said with cross game voice chat. It just isn't possible.

Anyway, I'm sure there was a similar thread a year or two ago but ah well, doesn't matter. Here's my list of problems/suggestions:
    • Complete re-organisation of the PS Stores. Have a main HQ to handle all the PS Stores, with regional branches used to co-ordinate stuff. Instead of being submitted multiple times, games should only need to be submitted once and then be available on all stores. They need to be completely reorganised too, with a lot more sorting options (as Deusfaux said).
    • Gifting should be possible, across regions too. If Xenogears is available on the US Store, I should be able to get it without jumping through silly hoops (like setting up a US account, importing a US PSN card, buying it and then be stuck with that account if I want to put it on the PSP or whatever).
    • PSN Profiles need an overhaul. Right now they're ugly looking things with little information. Make them bigger, with all information on one screen (rather than the current three) and look a lot better.
    • When receiving a message in-game, pressing the PS button should open it straight up.
    • Trophy icons should be available as PSN avatars. It gives trophies more of a purpose and opens up a lot more avatar options.
    • RSS Support would be great. I never used it on the PSP but I seem to remember quite a few people liking it.
    • An Apps column for things like Mubi, Netflix, Qriocity, Video Editor, Photo Gallery, VidZone and whatever. I don't really like them cluttering up all my columns.
    • Completely seperate the PS3 and PSP stores from each other. They should be two stores, like the Game and Video stores are.
    • Bring the Comic store across to the PS3.
    • Delete the Video and Game PS Store icons from those columns and just add a seperate icon for each store in the PlayStation Network column. Create a PlayStation Store column if needed.
    • More XMB options, namely text size options (to put it back to the smaller text size it had a year or two back), more fonts and 2 layer deep folders.
    • New internet browser, preferably a Chrome port.

One of the guys on SCEE's PS Store staff has hinted something's going to be happening with that soon, maybe to make it more in-line with what they've shown of the NGP's store.

Folding@Home is very system intensive (it's basically using Cell to do a shitload of math), so folding in the background and playing any PS3 game would be impossible.

Would be nice if they would add a few "light" games to the application though, it would be pretty cool to be able to play some sort of old Namco Arcade style games while I was folding.

You can browse the PSP section from a PS3 or a PSP, you don't need Media Go at all (although it makes downloading/storing games a hell of a lot easier).

Media Go used to be fucking terrible (I used to complain about it every time it was mentioned), but after a few updates it's much, much better. The resource-hogging crashcan it used to be was replaced with a slimmer, stabler version a while ago. Also, why should Media Go browse the PS3 store? You can't download or transfer PS3 games to anything other than a PS3.

My only current complaint with Media Go is that it still installs that Apple-flavored pile of horseshit called "Quicktime" when it installs.

Why would a Bluetooth Remote control your TV?

The good news is that if your TV supports Bravia Sync or Control Over HDMI than you can use your TV's remote to control your PS3, which comes in handy when you're watching a movie or playing music.

I'm pretty sure the only reason it's there is to make sure the system has the proper codecs for converting video to mp4 so it's playable on the PSP. Media Go works fine after Quicktime has been uninstalled.

I might be an odd one here, but I rather like the XMB (I've never had/used an XBOX360 though). The only thing I would change is a better online system, so I can group friends more easily, or chat with them, or other things of the sort.

I'm just not a fan of the UI in general. The various patches over the years have led to a sloppy, cobbled together look. Things I'd change:

    1. The upper right-hand corner. Ugh. Ugly, and not very useful. Do we really need a scrolling marquee with advertising info? Take that shit out of there. The corner should have:

    Controller battery info
    Number of friends currently online
    Number of messages in inbox
A digital clock instead of the small, dumb analogue one

    Clear info at a glance.

    2. Notification system needs a lot of work. Putting new system messages in the upper right-hand corner is annoying. Do it like the XBox - messages in the center-bottom of the screen, unless in a game. Make the font bigger, and make it more stylized than white text on a gray box.

    3. A real web browser. I don't understand why neither Firefox nor Opera were an option at launch, nor Chrome now. Sony's browser sucks. My 60GB system locks up all the time because of JavaScript, and I frequently get 'Out of Memory' messages when looking at some Flash stuff. I even get general layout/CSS errors. If you're going to offer a browser, make/use one that works and push updates for it.

I agree the PS3 needs a "sort alphabetically" option for games, and it should be default. But until that changes, if the lack of said option really bothers you (the way it bothers me), you could do what I do. Change the clock right before you install your game. Since the creation date is based on your current time, you can make it so that sorting by creation date doubles as alphabetical as well. I do this on me PS3 and PSP.

While I like the idea of cross-game chat, party systems, and other online improvements, I seriously doubt we'll see any of those things implemented as long as PSN is free. If I had the choice between paying $60/yr and getting those features added, or leaving it the way it is now, I would leave it. However, I know it's inevitable. I'm sure when the PS4 rolls out, online play will become a PS+ exclusive (which will no doubt get a price increase to match Live).

Overall, I like the XMB. There are a lot of little things they could do to streamline it, but I hope they leave the overall interface alone.

What firmware update are you on? Cause all that stuff is there. The battery info you just have to press the PS button for, because showing battery info for every single thing attached to the PS3 would be kinda stupid. If you were using 7 controllers at a time, it'd cover the entire top of the screen and look way uglier. And I'm not sure how on earth you missed the digital clock. The analogue clock is really only used as a loading icon.

Oh and the ticker is only a problem in the US and Japan. PAL countries don't have it.

I sorta fixed the "sort alphabetically" problem by just separating my mammoth list of games into folders. I have a folder for Demos, a folder for PS1 games, and a folder for PS3 games.

    Works out ok for me.

Where I really have a problem is with music. It would be nice if I could just sort by folder name, instead of by artist/album/etc. Sometimes I like to group more than one artist or album into the same folder, and I don't really like making playlists.

Yeah I've got Best PS3 (for my favourites), PS3, PS3 Demo, PSone and PSP folders. I installed a 320GB HDD last year, so have plenty of space for all of them.

I'm thinking of creating a PS3 Adventure folder too, since TellTale's games can get pretty annoying (each episode is a solo game, so a 5 part series is 5 different games in a folder). I kinda wish they'd create a main hub for them, then have each episode come out as DLC for it. Trophies would probably be grouped that way too (rather than the current seperate trophy list for each episode).

I just wish the PS1/PS2 memory card browser didn't take three seconds per card, one by one, to render a stupid little memory card icon -- and refuse to show me the title of the card until the icon has rendered -- so it takes about 45 seconds to switch in a different card to play a different PS1/PS2 game. With the amount of data involved, a Commodore 64 could have rendered this screen faster.

However a relative has one of the earlier LCD models and not only does it fail the handshake but every now and again you have to boot into safe mode (or whatever it's called where you can reconfigure the video options). I always assumed it was a price you pay for being an early adopter.

Cross-game chat would be fantastic. Another thing that'd be nice is if messages made a noise. I've missed quite a few invites from just never noticing them.

does stuff get frequently delisted from the PS store or something?

I feel like there is a lot less stuff for multiplatform games showing up there vs xbox live

Where is the Battlefield Bad Company Demo? Still there on 360

and here's the page for PS3 version:

    http://us.playstation.com/games-and-media/demos/battlefield-bad-company-demo.html

Yet browsing and searching for it via my PS3 yield no results. Only BF1943

Why can't I organize the sorting of the games I've downloaded on my PSP, Sony?

I can separate them into separate folders, but it still sorts them by newest first...

I want that shit to be alphabetical.

There's a freeware program called PSP Content Manager that will let you resort your games easily. Just remember to hit Apply Sort when you're done.

Annoyingly enough, stuff does disappear every so often. Not only demos (including the bullshit Hot Pursuit demo), but full games as well:

    - Outrun Online Arcade was pulled from the PSN in Europe (and XBLM everywhere) when Sega didn't renew the Ferrari license

    - Sega Rally Revo for the PSP disappeared for reasons unknown

    - The batch of Disney PS1 games was removed, probably for licensing reasons

    - Jet Moto 3 was removed, probably for music licensing reasons

    - Some Dragonball Z PSP games were removed after six months

The good news is that if you buy something from the PSN, they are required to provide you with a download forever, which means that even after a game has been removed you can still redownload it from your download list. I'm not sure how that works with demos, but if it's in your list you could give it a shot.

I think a big thing I'd like to see is the allowance of music to play in the background while playing a game, much like the 360. It's great to put on your own soundtrack if you're playing a game for extended periods of time.

But everything else has been touched upon in this thread.

Probably not going to happen due to the fact Microsoft actually has that feature patented. Kinda like how Namco has a patent for mini-games during loading times. Software patents are so incredibly dumb.
