@ToxicPickle I'd do a bit more searching. Is your mouse particularly fancy? I know some mouse software is set up for FPSes, and can do things like adjust your dpi down when holding down the button for ironsights. Ideal for an FPS, but not what you want at any other time.
The mouse turning does feel kind of clunky compared to other games. However, you don't really need it to be super fast like you would in WoW PVP.
This is a problem I've had with getting a lot of my friends into GW. It just doesn't play like your standard MMO, and it's hard for them to understand why it doesn't have features X/Y/Z that have become the norm in the genre. Although I think A.Net tried to be very explicit about what kind of game they were making, a fair amount of people seem to believe that GW was and is a half-assed MMO that couldn't bother to have a fully persistent world, enough content for more than twenty levels, or even give you a decent number of slots on your skill bar.
Also, when I say "standard MMO", I'm not being derogatory. I love me some EQ/WoW/WAR/RIFT, but they are not the same kind of game.
I'll be the first to recognize that different isn't always a bad thing. Especially in this day of WoW-clones as far as the eye can see. But there are some ways that GW just feels old... like right-click auto equip, or click-and-drag to start a trade, or user configurable tagging/targetting.
Guild Wars is a fun game and I've just restarted playing it after a six year hiatus (and having a blast with it, despite never having bought any of the expansions) but it's still a six year old game.
I played the Rift beta and there was no "target closest enemy" button, and I couldn't see anything useful like bad people that want to hurt me on the compass, and I was pretty disappointed.
I don't see how asking for the ability to turn my character smoothly by holding down one of the mouse buttons (I don't even care which one) and sliding it left or right is somehow bringing down the fabric of what made Guild Wars a unique or fun game, but okay.
My mouse isn't terribly fancy and I don't have any special settings or tweaks setup (brand new computer, new OS, everything installed fresh), so I don't think the problem is on my end unless it's just a general incompatibility with my specific hardware. This is possible of course, but I see others mentioning that they too see the clunkiness in mouse turning, which casts doubt on such a theory.
I'm not afraid to admit that this game just isn't for me, but I did give it a shot before saying so. I don't think that it's a sad thing that GW2 is trying to address the things that turned people off about the first game... especially if those things have to do with controls; I believe a unique game can still be made while also conforming to such overbearing burdens like smooth gameplay and responsive controls.
Toxic, I'm just confused what you mean by not turning. It does that just fine for me, I mean if I have mouse movement turned on and click or auto-run then it'll pan around instead but that's about it.
I believe I explained it on the previous page... when I try to turn my character using the mouse, it's very sluggish. In other words, I may only get a quarter turn from moving my mouse across the entire area of my desk I have allowed for mouse movements... where as in, for example, WoW my character would probably do a full revolution or more with that same amount of mouse movement.
I had originally come to the thread asking if there was a way to change this, and one or two people I believe answered that it was not possible. Others, however, decided to rail against mouse turning as some evil thing that would wreck the uniqueness of Guild Wars were it to be implemented.
Actually I think it may be some sort of problem with your system. It's very snappy for me...are you sure you're holding both mouse buttons down at the same time?
My comments about turning speed were for the keyboard. I think I misremembered or something. Here's a video to show you how it looks for me.

I am an old school WASD mouselook player myself. The mouselook turning in Guild Wars is *incredibly* sluggish, but you actually CAN speed it up. I discovered this quite by accident. The key is to increase your mouse resolution. There is no setting in the game - something I personally find annoying - but if your mouse is set to move your pointer completely across your screen in less than 1/2" of mouse travel (which is a LOT faster than a standard mouse) then the mouselook turning in the game is actually usable.
On the other hand, because of the high-level of interactions with all eight skillbar buttons (in most other MMOs, between macros and/or helper apps, I usually end up only using 5 buttons at most) and the Q and E keys for strafing, I'm finding that I'm using mouselook less and less. I never thought I'd say this, but keyboard turning and clicking the skillbar might actually be a better control scheme (for Guild Wars) than WASD/mouselook.
i started playing again after a long break ... so many new things
I've been trying to get a good 7 Heroes team for my warrior and while searching for info on good builds on Guru+PvXWiki (any other good sites?), i keep seeing stuff like "equip defensive set on Hero" ... what exactly is this defensive set? This is mostly for the caster heroes.

Usually means put a shield on them, although I never bother with my heroes.

PvXWiki is outdated, I believe, as the current version is actually GWPvX.
A defensive caster set usually means a spear & shield combo. Spears can have a +5 energy inscription (no >50% health or anything needed), while dealing physical damage (to set off Mark of Pain and Barbs) as well as being a ranged weapon (casters are squishy). Shields still give at least 8 armor and 30 health, with an inscription of your choice, regardless of your attribute points.
Don't worry about hero weapons too much unless it's horribly off-attribute or it's important to have something specific (i.e. enchanting mods, health for your healers, damage mods for melee, etc).
Yeah, i went to Varsburg Armory and crafted a few 40/40 wand+focus sets for most of my heroes ... should be more than enough.
I still have a few Survivor Insignias and Vitae runes so i guess i can put a few on them if they are too squishy.
That reminds of another, probably stupid, question ... if i put runes+insignias on a hero armor and later upgrade that hero armor, do they remain? I guess they do since it seems to just be a cosmetic change but i guess i better ask since thoses runes+insignia seem to cost a bit.

Yes they do. The only one I think you need to worry about is if you change Razah's profession.
So I picked this up during the steam sale because I was interested in GW2 and wanted to get a sense of the game's history. What's a good solo class for just logging in and tuning out and hitting things without needing to worry about a really complex skill setup or a bunch of tricks or anything like that?
Basically, if you were going to play this game but stubbornly resist learning anything about the intricities of the system, what's the most braindead class to play?
You can't actually be effective without learning how things work, but...elementalist. Resize your compass until it's big. Get AoEs. Faceroll your number keys.
I agree with the Ritualist suggestion, it's what i've been playing recently when i'm bored of my warrior and it's pretty nice for when you don't want to think that much.
And if you grabbed Nightfall+EOTN, i suggest doing the initial quests of those to grab a nice set of heroes after you leave the Ritualist/Factions newbie island.
So for someone getting back into this, what should I get?
I quit when factions came out. I have prophecies + factions. Should I get nightfall for the extra classes? What about eye of the north or whatever it's called?
Also, my girlfriend might be interested in playing. She doesn't have any of the games. Is there any reason she should buy Prophecies, or is it fine to just get factions/nightfall for the classes. What would you miss out on without prophecies?
EDIT: Looking at the NCSoft store, it looks like they have the initial trilogy for $30 as a bundle, but if I want Nightfall for myself it's also $30 by itself. That's rubbish. Doubly so because the packaged trilogy also looks like it includes a couple bonus thingamagigs.
I wonder if I could purchase the whole trilogy and just use the nightfall code. Hell, maybe I'll just get it anyway, because I doubt I can remember the info to an account I last used in 2006.
Nightfall and Eye of the North are both awesome and introduce Heroes along PVE-only skills. Heroes are customizable henchmen that you kinda 'collect' and aren't as useless as the normal henchmen.
I really really like the Nightfall campaign. Eye of the North is pretty good too but i think you need Prophecies for it(not 100% sure on this).
For your girlfriend, check the prices on Steam, might be cheaper than on the store.
Oh very cool, I didn't realize it was on steam. Now I wish my versions were on steam.
And apparently I already bought Nightfall at some point in the past, so I guess I'm good to go. I don't really have any characters I remember how to play so I'll just start fresh and look at EOTN once I get up in level. It seems like you can't start that content until later anyway.
I'm a little apprehensive about Heroes, just because I hate AI in most MMOs. With the henchmen I felt more like it was a constant escort mission, rather than having useful helpers. I'd rather not rely on them too much for the main campaign if I can help it. With that in mind, what two professions would be best for doing most of the content? I assume a monk and something that can take a beating would be the easiest setup.
As per some of the discussion above, Ritualist is probably the easiest class to play but you can play anything you like. Unfortunately, i only know about Warriors and now Rits(also a bit of Necro+Assassin) so i can't give you an overview on the other classes.
You can start EOTN at level 10. You get a buff that gives you lvl20 stats until you are that level. Heroes help A LOT more than henchmen and i think right now all the content can be done with Heroes, even the elite areas and in Hard Mode.
In fact, in the the new toon i've made, the Rit, this is what i've done: Did the newbie island and then immediately unlocked travel to Kryta and Elona(Nightfall). Did the first few NF quest to get the first 5 heroes(War, 2 Monks, Dervish and a Ranger or Elementalist), did the other 2 heroes quests for Assassin + Necro heroes and then went to EOTN to grab the starting heroes(Monk, Elementalist, Mesmer) and still managed to get another 2 easily(Rit and Dervish).
Now i have a good core team of Heroes(2 Monks, 2 Ele,1 Mesmer, 1 Rit & 1 Necro) and i'm rolling through the factions campaign easily without much the pain of doing it with the (retarded) henchmen. It helps that i have pretty much all skills unlocked for my account so i can use pretty much every overpowered build that works on heroes but even without it, i think they are still better than the default henchmen.
Unfortunately, the game is pretty old right now and it's hard to find groups for most missions so Heroes are really more helpful than you might think.
Yeah, I didn't expect to find many players doing basic content, which is why I was hoping a smart duo would be able to tackle most of it. But, if we have to use heroes I guess we will.
It seems like a ton has changed since i last played. I remember back when Factions launched, most people thought ritualists were pointless as a main profession. it's good to see that's changed.
Yeah regardless of whether you use real players, heroes or henchmen, you won't be able to duo much if any of the content. You'll need to fill out your party one way or another.
Heroes have pretty fantastic AI in comparison to the henchmen, not the least of which because you can configure them however you like, and you've got direct control over what they use automatically, and what needs to be manually triggered by you.
Hell, if you're duoing, then you'll both be able to control their individual positions if you run 3 heroes each. Seriously, heroes are great.

If you need the rigidity of what every other game company already designed a thousand times over, then it is definitely not for you.

Summon spirits, the one hex you need. Profit.
Also you don't really solo in this game, you'll need at least henchmen/heroes as well.

Yeah, back in Factions, Assassins also seemed to suck on PVE and 'now' they seem to be pretty good, especially for farming.
