PS3 Problem: No audio on PS3 games, all other audio is gravy

I'm staying at a friends place and he doesn't play a lot of games on his PS3, so we're really confused what is causing this and he has no idea when it would have started. Everything on the PS3 works, except for the in game audio of PS3 games. The OS, downloads, streaming stuff, PS2 games, Blu-Rays, even the trailers and the audio for the game's splash screen on the OS (which is all content on the actual disc) will play. But once we tell the game to play? Radio silence.
Any ideas? We've already reset the settings on the PS3.

...check the video cable? Try turning the t.v. off and on again? Sometimes my t.v. doesn't play sound if i switch from watching tv to the hdmi channel...

What kind of TV? Also, what about trying to run it through the composite cables and see what happens?

Its a crappy Insignia. The thing has input issues every time a new signal gets sent to it it seems.

I didn't see in your OP what kind of cable you are using. Is it HDMI?

    Yea, HDMI.

edit: He's played games in the past. He beat God Of War last month for instance. In-game sound used to work.

    I don't own a PS3 so I am a blind wizard.

"In sound settings try changing from lpcm to bitstream."

Did that work? If not, tell me all the available settings in the sound settings.

Typically, when this happens to me, I have to reset both the PS3 and the TV. This has happened on other HDMI connections as well. It also sounds like the Dolby 5.1 or DTS setting in the game is on and not properly transmitting to the TV (or the TV is incapable of translating Dolby/DTS).
