I have tried three times to get into Grand Prix Story and it just doesn't click with me.
Ah, well.
Same here. There's something I'm just not... getting about it. Seems impossible to ever beat the third GP; I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I can never:
1. Win the off-road/ice races, even with knobby tires/buggies.
2. Ever have enough data to research the required tech at the tier of the game I'm at.
The whole thing just seems... unbalanced at times.
Does anyone have any recommendations for 2 players on one iPad games that me and my brother can play while he's in town? Got some sort of flick sports thing that's fun, but looking for more.

So I've just started playing this so I have no idea on the long term/necessity of IAP, but Princess Punt is a lot of fun and really ridiculous (in a good way). It's free too! It's like a weird RPG Angry Birds but you're kicking heroes into enemies and they level up after each level in an Infinity Blade type of way via items.
The only annoying thing is after every little achievement they want you to post to Facebook and Twitter which (as far as I can tell) you can't turn off. However, if you're willing to post you get slot tickets for random items/gold.
Since I never use my phone for Facebook or Twitter I just made a dummy account for each to post to and get the stuff.
I recommend trying the game out though. Graphics are pretty rad too. Reminds of Okami in a cel-shaded 3D sort of way.
It's weird to see Sonic CD outselling GTA III. I know there's a price difference, a family factor difference, and a "really works better on a touch screen" difference, but it's still surprising to see a Sonic game do better than a GTA in this day and age. Good for them.

I actually like grand prix story quite a bit, but it took a bit to grow on me.
The trick with it is upgrading parts and your vehicles, and then using the game mode + thingy to bring a better starter vehicle in to the next round.
I forget the exact levels you need to upgrade your vehicles but generally you don't need to upgrade everything to max to unlock the next thing.
As long as you get decent bits of upgrading going, are getting new vehicles, and new engines / wheels, wings, etc. you'll be witty pretty.
Oh and you need to train your driver a whoooole lot.
And probably have multiple vehicles, so you have something to pick on icy or dirt roads that are configured specifically for them.
Looks like pretty much Square-Enix's entire catalog is on sale. The Chaos Rings games seem to be the best deal at around half off whereas FFT and FFIII are around 25% off.

Yeah but the problem is that you can only keep ONE thing from game-to-game; so if I keep the upgraded researched V12, I can't keep any other part. And waiting months between races means fewer research points and cash. And I've tried to keep a car/config for certain races, but they're never as good as my other "main" cars.
And fuck, how the hell do you unlock 4WD drive trains? I've YET to get it and I've played the game like 20 times.
For anyone not completely burned out on TD games, Fantasy Defense is pretty solid at $0.99.
There isn't much in "tower" variety (which are warriors, archers, and mages in this game) but you do get powerful unique hero units that can only be placed in one spot of the level which is kind of neat. Also, you earn points after each level which can be used to permanently upgrade your heroes/units which gives the game an RPG flair.
It's not mindblowing but it's 50 levels for only $0.99 and I'm pretty hooked on it. There are IAP but so far they don't seem like a requirement. I believe you can replay levels for additional (but reduced) experience but I haven't had to yet.
Not sure if a 5 year old would appreciate it, but Scribblenauts Remix is on sale right now for 99 cents.
I came here to ask for opinions about it. Superior to the DS version?
The DS version has more levels, but it's essentially Super Scribblenauts on the iDevice without a gamepad to steer your character. The main lament is that compared to the DS games, it has fewer puzzles and levels, but the gameplay is just as good as the DS Scribblenauts games. Just like Super Scribblenauts, it has adjectives to modify the nouns. I've really enjoyed it, even though it's so short.

I bring the banana car over, it does very very well in the early races, which means you can improve much faster, it's how I ended up winning the everything in the end. I did it just on a lark but turned out to be a good idea.
The 4WD comes from a sponsorship, pear inc I think.

Fewer levels and crash happy on my iPad but I would still totally recommend it at 99 cents.

I found Scribblenauts to be an interesting diversion for a buck, but I didn't play it much beyond those first few days.
I'm looking for iPad/iPhone app recommendations for a 5 year old nephew. Doesn't have to be a game, either. Something to help him with reading?
Anyone have experience with this? Because I encounter children pretty much ONCE per year.
My nephew loves playing Aqueduct and Need for Speed (Hot Pursuit) on my iPad, hes 4 and a half now. Don't expect them to be good with it, but its fun for them.
When he was younger he liked playing in some music keyboard app I had (GarageBand I think?)
Edit: Oh and Tiny Wings. Angry birds never stuck for whatever reason that sorta surprised me.
I've been playing it on ipad 2. It's good, runs great, and is generally almost exactly the same as the PC version. There are some weird controls for some things, I still have no idea how switching weapons is supposed to work - I just swipe the icon until I get what I want, but it often doesn't seem to go in any logical order - and there are missions which are super hard just because of the touch controls that were easy on the PC (anything that requires a sniper rifle for instance, since you can only move the scope very very slowly, or the mission where you have to throw a grenade through a window and it's almost impossible to aim correctly). It's definitely worth the three bucks though.
I also like how many options there are for tweaking controls. You can turn on gyro steering for vehicles - although the camera doesn't tilt so it kind of sucks - or use an analog stick for it, or the default touch buttons. Apparently you can also reposition all the touch buttons.
How many touch options do they give you? I could see it coming in handy for stuff like, say, targeting a car you want to jack, or to attack a specific person, etc.
What about camera controls? Is there a right stick option?
There doesn't appear to be a right stick option, which would totally solve a lot of the aiming difficulties I've had. You can rotate the camera around by swiping on the screen wherever there isn't a control, but it's not useful for aiming weapons.
Getting into cars is as it was on PC - you press the button and your guy runs to whichever vehicle is physically nearest (if you're close to any). You pretty much can't choose which person to shoot if there's more than one in front of you, without switching to the cumbersome first person view some guns have (rocket launcher, the tougher assault rifle). Usually you want everyone dead anyway so it's not a big deal but it's been a problem a couple of times (I am halfway through the game already, probably because I've beaten this game before more than once on PC).
The biggest problem I have had is with the camera not snapping to the direction the character is facing when you shoot, you have to actually walk in a direction for a while for the camera to rotate around. This means you sometimes end up in a situation where a guy you need to shoot is in front of your character, but behind the camera, so you just have to press the fire button and hope he focuses on the right dude (he "locks on" to guys so that works surprisingly often). Also blowing up cars with a shotgun or assault rifle is no longer a very viable option since there's no locking on to those.
Enjoying it anyway, but those few missions where you can't just wreck everyone's shit with a car can be very frustrating.
The control options it does give you are:
-adjust on foot controls
-adjust driving controls (both of these let you drag and resize every control and hud element, which is nice)
-analog steering
-accelerometer
-left handed analog (i don't really know what this does?) edit: okay i guess it just flips the horizontal position of everything on the screen, makes sense i guess
-invert look

I haven't played gta 3 since massive time spent just after it launched. I'm tempted to buy it just for nostalgia but I despise on screen soft-pads. DESPISE

It's surprisingly great - big fan of this port. Absolutely amazing.

I dont think many games support it, which is sad. I am holding off on GTA till I get an iPad 3 as its a crah fest on the iPad 1, also Vice City might hit before then.
Was referred to it by CAG, who was also referred to it by GAF. You have to open the site on your iPhone/iPad.
All you have to do is download the free sponsored apps, run them for 30 seconds, and you get points. You can delete the apps after you get the points.
I redeemed Sonic CD and Tiny Wings with the points. I would have had enough to download Infinity Blade II, but the Poker app wasn't working (seems it got removed). I'm not sure how often they add new sponsored apps, or how long those gifts are available.
I'm somewhat suspicious about how it accesses your iTunes account, but the people at CAG say it's all safe and legit, so I say enjoy it.

I can confirm this works, Infinity Blade II is downloading now. It asked to install a profile, and when I tried to remove it afterward I couldn't find it, it was as if i had no profiles installed. Is it possible for a profile to uninstall itself?

For the low, low price of Free? Not even a question, gang - dooooo eeeeeet.
I've got 26 hours played in this damn game already. And my buddy who introduced it to me has a higher score than I do in about 5 hours played.

I'm debating whether or not I would get an equal experience on the iPad 2. $5 is cheap, but $2 is cheaper.
Also can you turn off the d-pad/button labels on the screen?
Also meant to post this earlier: Jetpack Joyride was my first review of an iOS game (and most likely won't be the last): http://trendygamers.com/2011/11/30/jetpack-joyride-review/

I have heard a lot of praise for this game, and I'm almost ready to dive in but....
Just to double check, it is good, right?
I mean, it's a Sonic spinoff game, so I have my doubts....

I beat it, and there are some neat and funny things you can do, but I'll never play it again.
What irritates me about that game is that it says It can create anything you think up, but even general stuff it doesn't know.

So GTAIII is on sale now for $2.99.
How is it on iPad 2? I was gifted this on Steam, but I'm intrigued at the idea of a better (?) widescreen version in portable form.
