[iPhone/iPad] games: Ghost Trick out. First two chapters, free!
League of Evil is now down to 99 cents. I remember some people enjoying it as a Super Meat Boy-ish game; I tried the Lite version and it didn't click with me.
Some charity-related updates: Capcom and Sega are offering sales on SFIV and a handful of Sonic games, with 100 percent of all proceeds being donated to earthquake relief efforts in Japan:
- Sonic Spinball, $0.99
- Sonic the Hedgehog, $1.99
- Sonic the Hedgehog 2, $2.99
- Sonic The Hedgehog 4™ Episode I, $3.99
- STREET FIGHTER IV, $0.99
Is this becoming more of a thing? I hope so, and I hope it gets collated and listed so people know where to spend charitable moneys.
I played WoW for years, and even though I knew that game wasn't WoW... it LOOKS almost identical. I mean, damn. I thought that Starcraft clone (Starfront) was blatant, but to my eyes, this is even moreso. Now, I'm not really trying to criticize them, as long as they did actually create all of their own art assets, but it doesn't seem terribly wise to poke Blizzard repeatedly with a stick, eh?
Still, it's not the worst idea I've ever heard. Just imagine how many people will quit during a raid and then just say "my bad, the cat stepped on the home button." Still, I've worn out the MMO part of my brain, so I don't think I'll jump on that right now.

I finally jumped on the iPhone bandwagon after repeatedly saying I'd never get one.
If I purchase something from iTunes or a game like Infinity Blade, is that cost applied to my cellphone bill, or am I correct in assuming that my debit card gets charged through my Apple account thing?

Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.

it'll charge your credit card that's tied to your Apple account.
Minor note: when you first buy something from iTunes on your phone, you trigger a bit of a security mechanism such that you'll have to enter your card number again before you can buy from iTunes anywhere. That probably doesn't matter unless you're in a weird situation, buuuuut just so you know!
Tried out that 'Shadow Era' CCG after reading about it on Touch Arcade.
Obviously it's no MtG but it's really not bad. Certainly stole away my evening. Summary points:
- Free!
- Artwork quite nice.
- Interface and graphics work very well on phone screen.
- Gameplay fairly brisk and again works well on the phone (nothing is time limited, no interrupts or reactions or whatever)
- V quick to jump into online duels.
- Starter deck is perfectly playable.
- You earn in game gold by playing online, and at a decent enough rate to start buying some cards and customising your deck without massive grind.
- People I have played against who have clearly spent time or money on a deck quite different to the starter, still felt balanced fine against my starter deck.
- Did I say free?
The only downside is you have to be online to play, even against the AI.
In short, if you like CCGs it's well worth checking out.
Anybody have any impressions of Gameloft's release of The Settlers? It's .99 so I might just get it anyway, but is it any good like the other settlers games I've played for a short while?

It's entertaining enough. Reminds me a lot of Age of Empires, actually--without the Eras/Epochs (it just stays in the ancient world).

Why does everyone go apeshit for Angry Birds? Is the free one not as good as the pay one?
I played it a bit and I guess I wasn't sure what to expect, but for the "greatest smart phone game evar!" its pretty boring...
It gets a LOT more challenging and complex in later levels, and it's fun to see an entire large structure collapse from one bird. Though the demo does communicate the basic concept.

I don't get it either. Simply not my cup of tea, I guess. Now, Dungeon Raid... that game is going to be the bane of my existence.

Angry Birds sort of exemplifies the "casual game." Super easy concept, easy to learn, short levels, cute and goofy characters... but more than that it almost resists any kind of complication. Like, someone who has a lot of familiarity with games probably won't have much of an advantage with AB than a complete game novice. Once you learn how to play the game, there isn't really a higher level of skill that you can attain. I mean, I'm sure people who play it a lot and 3-star every level do better than people who don't, but the difference doesn't seem that striking.
I'm not sure if that helps its success or not, but i've been chewing over it for a while, trying to figure out why it's so successful, and that occurred to me.

Well, you can get a feel for how to take advantage of structural weaknesses and such, but other than that, yeah.
Not to mention it's ludicrously polished, the characters are appealing and Rovio just keeps rolling out levels at no charge. Hell, they just added yet another world to the original game yesterday.

However, at least I'm pleasantly surprised that it far surpasses the other tower defense games I've played.

So my friend got me a 15$ ITunes card which I thought I would never use because I had not gotten an IPhone yet, but I'm glad he did. I got Sim City Deluxe, Sims 3 and Samurai 2: vengeance. I have 5.25 left. Any suggestions? No shooters though, shooters feel awkward and clunky on IPhone. Wish they could make a controller for this thing.

You should own Angry Birds, Tiny Wings, and Dungeon Raid.
Also Textropolis sucked up my life for a while way back when. If you like word games.

If you fancy yourself a grappling hook aficionado, check out Super Quickhook and/or Hook World. Both swingin' good times, if you ask me.
Are there any good strategy games available in the mould of Advance Wars and the like? I have one called UniWar which isn't bad, but it doesn't quite have the charm of something like Advance Wars.

I've heard that Mecho Wars is pretty much Advance Wars. I grabbed it during one of the half dozen times it was free, but haven't had a chance to play yet.
Looks like there's also an always-free version that only features online multiplayer.
Edit: As for must-own iPhone games, Cut The Rope is pretty great. I think it even won best Handheld game (a category that also included DS and PSP stuff) at both the GDC and Bafta Awards this year.

If charm is what you're looking for, I wouldn't recommend Mecho Wars. The graphics and art is nice, but the unit design is terrible. You can barely tell what anything is and what they look like is only barely connected to their abilities.

Yeah, I had a look at that on the app store, and the unit design did look somewhat...esoteric, to say the least. A nice aspect of Advance Wars was the easy to grasp assumption about what each unit was good for based on their real-world function.
After playing with Gameloft's The Settlers I've become kind of frustrated with it. There are a lot of game mechanics that the tutorial levels leave to be discovered by trial and error, and that's no way to learn a strategy game. Basic stuff, like how many buildings you can have in a given town and what the criteria are for placing some kinds of buildings.
I'm still going to play it, I'm just not going to take it very seriously until I learn these rules.
The worst offender is how to start another town. I successfully built a pioneer's wagon and got them to start expanding the borders of the proto-town, but I couldn't assign my two spare mans as diggers or builders, which are absolutely essential in building new buildings. For some reason it said I had zero free population. Whatever. I'll get it figured out eventually.

The fight scenes in Heavy Rain are still some of my favorite in any game ever.
Bought this and played some at lunch. Seems pretty fun so far, the retro graphics look good on an iPhone 4.

OK, maybe not... but Gameloft appears to be making a pretty decent-looking clone of it:
