Only problem with a portable only franchise (which I consider Pokemon to be, because Nintendo would apparently rather go out of business than release a full, classic rpg on a console) is that it guarantees I won't play it. I know it's not everyone's problem but I do my gaming on a TV.
I'd love to one day check out Pokemon, but it would have to be on a console and it would have to be a version that has all the critters in it to be caught without having to trade or go to Toys R Us or use friend codes, because I hate that stuff. In conclusion, I'll probably never check out Pokemon.
Doesn't Sony do something similar with Monster Hunter?

I don't actually take my portable devices on the move with me. I mostly play my DS at home. While that sorta kills maybe the main appeal to portable gaming, we've long since been in an era where there are great games exclusive to handhelds. Back in the Gameboy days, I'm pretty sure most titles for it were available on the NES.

This. I pretty much never play my portables outside of the house. And with all the kinds of amazing and unique titles on the DS and PSP, I really can't understand why anyone would skip over them. People really need to get over these stigmas that haven't really been applicable to handhelds since the GBA.
Frankly If I really want to play a game while I'm out and about, its usually on my smart phone.

I do both actually, my DS is my travel buddy and I play it at home....so yea. And yes, the DS/PSP both get ahold of some fantastic exclusives that make the systems worth owning. The DS in particular has been the go to system for most RPGs for quite a while.
There will be no Online Pass code within the box of Crysis 2.
That's not because lazy shop person stole it, but because developer Crytek didn't want it, Gamertag Radio reports. And Crytek, an independent studio signed with EA Partners, has the luxury of being able to say no.
The reasons for opting out were two: first, when EA offered Online Pass to Crytek the feature was deemed too young and untested; second, Crytek wanted multiplayer played by as many people as possible, regardless of whether they bought Crysis 2 second-hand or brand new. Most console owners have never played a Crysis game, and Crytek wants to make as big a splash as possible.
Online Pass is commonplace in EA games today. The idea is to bundle a code in a box that unlocks multiplayer - or gifts various downloadable content - when redeemed. It's free to first-hand buyers but requires purchasing online should you acquire the game second hand.
I await the torrents of derision due to the game's shameless exploitation of sex to appeal to male gamer's basic instincts.
Who am I kidding. It's Atlus and it's Japanese. Only American companies and Swear Words are offensive!
EDIT
So far I don't really have a problem with Online Pass. It's been an interesting experiment. You can play online, but you're cut out of future, Free, DLC.

EA is investigating for Eurogamer now.
Hi5 to Crytek there.
So.. exactly nothing changes for new copy purchasers? k.
Oh wait, that's right, I won't even bother buying it at all. Like millions of other gamers.
I was too busy having fun with the Bulletstorm demo. The Crytek 2 demo was online play, which was partially a good move other than the fact that it was CoD but with invisibility and shields.
I played it online for a few matches, didn't really find anything new and exciting about it and deleted it shortly after that.
Probably not the type of impression they want people to have but I have a hunch it's not going to be the monster hit they think it's going to be. Maybe on PC, I don't know how the first one sold I just remember people taking out second mortgages on their house to pay for a new PC to run it.
THQ planning North Korean protest to promote Homefront
Surprised? Yeah, we're not either. Turns out that THQ is once again planning a North Korean-themed event , though this time it's GDC that the publisher is invading. As reported by the SF Weekly, anti-North Korean protesters (read: hired actors) will be marching across the Golden Gate bridge, through the streets of SF, and ending across the street from GDC at Yerba Buena Gardens. And as you likely inferred from the headline above, the protest is staged in promotion of the company's next game, Homefront.
This time around, the spectacle intends on decrying "North Korea's human rights violations," and apparently features "speeches by global experts, musical performances, and the launch of 10,000 balloons." We're not sure what the balloons have to do with the forthcoming launch of Homefront, but we're all about decrying human rights violations. So, um, score?

You know what's next? Somebody re-making Bad Dudes and then trying to stage a kidnapping of the President.
You know what, THQ just lost a sale. In the current environment, protests of authoritarian regimes is serious business with lives at stake. Exploiting that for games sales, is beyond bad taste. Ask the folks in Libya how they feel about their regime and what they are willing to do to end it.

Marketing!
The industry is now making Acclaim levels of advertising retardation the norm.
Meatmortem recap1: Wii and Wiiware canceled, but we are now 3ds devs so who knows what may happen!
Meatmortem recap 2: Last 2 months of development were hell and xbla launch didnt go as planned due to underperforming Game Feast promo
Meatmortem recap 3: Steam out sold xbla, we have sold about 400k copies to date.
Meatmortem recap 4: the retail edition is almost done and will have tons of awesome extras
...
to clear up confusion: the retail "ultra edition" is going to be in stores all over north america and sell for 20$ it will also be on amazon
...
i believe the Ultra edition will hit stores in april, but im not sure when in april.
Having it for an insanely cheap price on Steam for the holiday sales will do that.
GDC – SAN FRANCISCO – March 1, 2011—The wizards of Arrowhead Studios have whipped up something special for all the Magicka fans out there, today revealing the first expansion for the definitive “blow-up-your-friend” simulator that has taken the fantasy world by meteor storm. Magicka: Vietnam (yes, you read that right) will soon be available on all major digital distribution channels.
Have you ever wondered what it would have been like if wizards were allowed to roam the jungles of war-torn Vietnam, attempting to bring peace and stability to the region by casting spells on all opponents? Wait, you haven’t ever wondered that? Ever? Okay, so we’re probably the only ones who have but in our defense: here’s your chance to stop being so closed-minded. Magicka: Vietnam delivers over-the-top action as players take on the role of four meek and physically inept wizards as they try to do what so many 80’s action stars have done in the past: blow stuff up.
Games were sold in Finland for 126 million euros.
Both physical and digital sales grew from 2009.
The gaming market grew 7.4%. 3 045 000 copies of games were sold.
The online sales value was about 18 million euros, that includes downloads for PC, consoles, cell phones, etc.
The console sales net value was 52.4 million euros.
About 363 000 of various additional gaming devices were sold.
The console market grew 18%, 20 million euros.
All in all, the game market sales were about 199 million euros. *

Also, seriously, if we want to argue that videogames are even in the same discussion as "art", we have to take the marketing and impact of the game into account. Don't defend THQ.

1. I haven't downloaded SMB at all, so I may buy the retail edition instead. (I wish they would release MM9 & 10 in retail editions too.
2. That promotional stupidity is still not as stupid as Capcom's "Hide severed limbs filled with rotten meat all over London" stunt.

Yes, but THQ has been fairly good about not doing anything totally stupid recently (Except maybe that regional pricing on Retribution). I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt until I know exactly what happened. But really, I had no intention of buying Homefront anyway.
