I wonder if the silly, silly geese making the decisions in EA and similar companies will ever realize that when you rush things they often turn out to be shit and ruin the reputation of the product regardless of whether stuff is fixed later?

Mike Laidlaw: Well it's hard to know exactly what's going on with scores that are really, really negative.
Guess they're not use to anything but the regular 9-10 game score huh.
Yeah, I'm sure they're complete strangers to 6/10 reviews from the guys that gave Dragon Age: Origins 5/10 (Edge)...
I haven't played the game yet but a lot of the bitching sounds exactly like the shit that people whined about when Mass Effect 2 came out (which I had problems with but still thought it was an awesome game). Dragon Age's gameplay and level design were boring as fuck so they changed them in the sequel, just like they did with Mass Effect. I'll wait until I play the game before deciding whether they went too far but I did really enjoyed the demo.
And it's not like they specifically scheduled the interview to defend the game, so I find the 'omg damage control' comments pretty idiotic. What, you think they should've started insulting the game they've just spent the last couple of years on?

That said WHAT THE FUCK EA. It's not news that they would do stupid shit like this but the stupidity of it still needs reiterating
And given the amount of bullshit I had to go through to get the game to work (including about 8 hours spent with an actually really helpful EA tech guy, then having to use a VPN to circumvent the regional locking because of dumb broken servers), then add the fact I couldn't buy DLC because the bioware social site has now randomly decided my paypal is anathema, I don't really have much good to say about the technical side of Dragon Age 2's release.
On the other hand the game was fun. But it's embarassing that they re-used so manly areas when the reason was literally nothing other than "because we didn't have enough time to do any better".
Also worth noting that DA2 is shorter than Mass Effect 2.
I haven't played the game yet but a lot of the bitching sounds exactly like the shit that people whined about when Mass Effect 2 came out
So far DA2 is about 10 points below mass effect 2 on metacritic. The complaints about area re-use and length are certainly legitimate (I've completed it). It's still very fun though.

If you were referring to my earlier damage control comment, it wasn't aimed at the people criticising the game. It was aimed at the account banning incident, which just leaves a bad taste in my mouth regardless of my opinions regarding the game. It's about being able to use the product you paid for.
So in the wake of this tragedy going on with the tsunami in japan, myhearts go out to people affected, I couldn't help but wonder how this will end up affecting the big three in general. Western third party developers won't be hurt, japanese developers could be greatly affected. And where is the hardware for each company made?
This is going to affect a lot of different businesses, economies, etc... But how will it effect the gaming world? Microsoft just hit record sales for non gaming months for them, and ps3 is expensive to produce as is.

The news is blowing it massively out of proportion I suspect because of the size of the earthquake, ignoring the fact this will have nowhere near the death toll of something like the Kobe earthquake (I suspect).
IGN: After the game is finished, do you go back through a play it again with all of the music in place?
Zur: Sure thing. I'm actually really anxious for the game right now, so I can pop it in and start playing. I'm really looking forward to see it. I know there are a few bugs that still need to be fixed. Unlike other titles from Bioware, this [score] was kind of a rush job. EA really wanted to capitalize on the success of Origins, so the game was really being pushed hard to be released now. So I'd like to know if there are bugs, or if there's anything we could patch or fix.
I still give any particular bug a 50/50 chance of actually being fixed, even if it's well known. The easily reproducible swapping powers in the hotbar during combat CTD in ME2 was never fixed, despite it being shown how to cause it within the first week of release.
Or the DAO memory leak, which they kept saying they "fixed" but is still a problem.
I'd ask why we aren't talking about NPD numbers. Some slightly updated info:

Pokemon SoulSilver: 2 Million
Hardware:
Xbox 360 - 535,000 (+27%) [Top Console, 360's Best Non-Holiday Month Ever] Wii - 454,000 (+14%)
People continue to not give a shit about Killzone 3, at least in the US.
Sales of video game hardware in February propelled industry sales to a surprising improvement over last year, according to The NPD Group's monthly sales data.
Most analysts expected a decline in sales of games and console systems. Software sales did fall 5% below sales in February 2010 -- still a slightly better performance than expected. But all the three console systems saw increased sales.
"Within the video games industry, the console segment of the market was up 12% in dollar sales across hardware, software, accessories, and game cards while the portable segment of the market declined versus February 2010 by 27%," says NPD's Anita Frazier. "We are looking for the portable segment of the market to rebound beginning later this month when the highly anticipated 3DS launches in the U.S. on March 27th. Seven days of sales will be included when we release our March sales results on April 14th."
And Call of Duty: Black Ops became the best-selling game in history, topping Wii Play, Frazier says.
"The best-selling hardware system of the month was the Xbox 360 which had its biggest non-holiday (November/December) sales month ever, surpassing September 2007 when Halo 3 launched.," Frazier says. "The 250 GB system bundled with the Kinect sensor was one of the drivers of the increase in average selling price among console hardware."
All three console systems realized a unit sales increase over last February and a unit sales increase over January 2011, NPD says.
Breaking down the console growth, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 up about 25% in sales (dollar value) and the Wii up 15%, compared to last year, says Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter.
Total industry sales rose 3% to $1.36 billion, compared to $1.33 billion in February 2010. Sales of video game hardware rose 10% ($467 million vs. $426 million), while software dropped ($601 million vs. $634 million). Video game accessories continued to rise, thanks to Microsoft's Kinect and Sony's PlayStation Move products ($257 million vs. $210 million).
"The big surprise to me is that hardware ticked up," Pachter says. "Maybe the recession really is over. People don't buy software because there is money burning a hole in their pocket. But they actually would buy hardware. Most recent jobs data show a slight uptick in jobs. Maybe consumer confidence is coming back. ... It has to be either that there's a change in NPD methodology or it is a reasonable signal that consumer confidence is back."
Nintendo’s Wii™ console has crossed the 35 million sales mark in the United States, according to the NPD Group. More than 454,000 Wii consoles sold in February to put Wii across the 35 million mark faster than any other console in U.S. history.
February proved to be a notable month for Nintendo software as well. Not only was Just Dance 2 from Ubisoft the No. 1 best-selling game of the month with more than 554,000 sold, but four Nintendo games reached new sales milestones. Donkey Kong Country™ Returns for the Wii console, which launched in November 2010, crossed the 2 million mark in February, while New Super Mario Bros.™ Wii, which launched in November 2009, just crossed the 8 million sales mark.
On the portable side, the Pokémon™ SoulSilver Version game for the Nintendo DS™ family of systems launched in March 2010 and crossed the 2 million sales mark in February, while the New Super Mario Bros. game, which launched in May 2006, just passed 9 million in sales. These milestones further demonstrate the “evergreen” nature of games that play on Nintendo systems.
“February was the biggest non-holiday month of console sales in the U.S. in the history of the Xbox, according to NPD. For the second month in a row, Xbox 360 was the number one console, maintaining its lead in the U.S. as the top selling console in 2011,”
Sony PR:
NPD’s February numbers illustrate continued growth of the entire PlayStation 3 ecosystem, including increases in hardware, software and peripheral sales. PlayStation’s exclusive titles, combined with stereoscopic 3D and precision motion controlled gaming, continue to resonate with consumers, and we look forward to furthering the momentum with MotorStorm Apocalypse and SOCOM 4 next month.
-- Patrick Seybold, Sr. Director of Corporate Communications at SCEA
For comparison, the PS2 has sold 50 million in North America as of December 2008.
I'm consistently surprised about the sales of NSMB because I am an idiot.
While Sony was reluctant to hand out the hardware data, Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter passed along the NPD data for the PS3 console: it sold 403,000 units for the month of February. That's up 12% year-over-year but it's still not as good as Xbox 360's 535,000 (27% bump) or Wii's 454,000 (14% rise). Additionally, the PlayStation Move continues to be outsold by Kinect it would seem.
"Under one-fifth of PS3 sales included bundles with Sony’s Move controller, suggesting another modest month (we have chosen not to subscribe to peripheral data). Over 2/3 of Xbox 360 sales included bundles with Microsoft’s Kinect peripheral, as Xbox 360 Kinect console bundles again outsold PS3 Move console bundles by over 5:1," commented Pachter. "We note that the top selling Kinect software titles easily outsold their Move counterparts."
Pachter also reiterated that price cuts are likely forthcoming but that for now 360 and Kinect have the momentum.
"We expect demand for the Xbox 360 to remain stronger than the other consoles due to the popularity of Kinect. We expect Wii and PS3 hardware sales to continue to decline (despite February’s up month for both) in the first part of 2011," he said. "Without further price cuts, we expect hardware sales to be down in 2011, and we think that the console manufacturers will position cuts around the E3 Expo in early June."
Does this apply to consoles?
No. This is applies to PC/Mac only.
What about Mac/Cider, does it use Securom?
Dragon Age: Origins for Mac/Cider used Securom. Dragon Age 2 for Mac/Cider will NOT use Securom and instead it will use the same non-Steam system listed above.
A PC review mentions Securom, what gives?
All EA preview & review game builds sent to press use Securom which is where the assumption came from. The Dragon Age 2 actual retail & download version of the game that you will play will not use Securom, it uses one of the systems above.
Hm, so the PS3, while in third place, managed some decent sales too. Wonder what caused the lift for all the consoles?
I also wonder how much continued absurd sales of CODBLOPS (It's up to 13.7 million in Ameriland alone) affected Killzone 3 and Penisstorm. Then again KZ is only a lukewarm property, while the other is a new IP.
Incidentally, here's NPD's list of the top-selling games of all time (at least when they started tracking this stuff in the late 90s):
1. Call of Duty: Black Ops
2. Wii Play W/ Remote
3. Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
4. Guitar Hero III Legends Of Rock
5. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
6. Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
7. Mario Kart w/ Wheel
8. New Super Mario Bros
9. Wii Fit
10. Call Of Duty: World At War
Hm. Wonder why CODBLOPS is doing so much better than MW2? And it looks like GTA4 did indeed sell less than San Andreas.

So the We Dare situation has gotten even more hilarious:
Ubisoft has been ordered to remove its "misleading" We Dare advertisement from the internet, Eurogamer can exclusively reveal.
PEGI's Enforcement Committee gave the French publisher three working days to comply, after which it will consider imposing a fine.
"The Committee concludes that the advertisement does NOT accurately reflect the nature and content of the product and it MISLEADS consumers as to its true nature," PEGI said in a statement issued to Eurogamer this morning.
"Consequently, the Committee considers imperative as a first measure that the advertisement for the game which was made available online should be taken down immediately. If this is not done within three working days of this decision this Committee will consider further immediate sanctions against the publisher."
Eurogamer understands Ubisoft was made aware of PEGI's ruling yesterday, around the same time it announced it would not release We Dare in the UK.
The advertisement, below, shows four adults pretending to spank each other using a Wii Remote as part of "flirtatious" We Dare mini-games.
At the time of publishing the advertisement was still embedded on Ubisoft's official We Dare product page, and still carried a 11th March release date.
We Dare hit the mainstream headlines after PEGI awarded the game a 12+ rating, which it has always insisted was appropriate for the content of the game.
Ubisoft claims the game was developed and marketed to adults.
"It was correct to give the game a 12 rating," PEGI said. "The content of the game and the interaction that the game itself implies do not warrant a higher rating.
"Marketing may have implied something else, but PEGI does not rate advertising, it rates game content. If people play the game, they will see that there is nothing inappropriate for ages 12 and older."
Tl;dr: British moralists demanded We Play get pulled for being too sexy, the Euro ratings system slapped Ubisoft because We Play isn't as sexy as advertised.

I assume people got tax money back and spent it on games.
Hm. Wonder why CODBLOPS is doing so much better than MW2? And it looks like GTA4 did indeed sell less than San Andreas.
Black Ops is a better game than MW2 and offers more variety. GTA4 sold less than San Andreas because it sucked.
Meh...I would say BLOPS offers generally less variety.
But it fixed a lot of thinks that were really annoying in MW2...added more problems...but it doesn't have many glaring problems like its predecessor.
If nothing else, it is a better game because you don't just run around getting noob tubed all game. BlOps multiplayer is playable which is much more than can be said for MW2.

Personally, I loved GTAIV. Though the disconnect between 'in-game' Niko and 'in-cutscene' Niko could be really hard to get past. 'I am torn and conflicted about this life of crime!' *robs bank, shoots three dozen police on the way out*

Whichever Rockstar group does the GTA series is, I think, incapable of weaving a good story into an open-world game. Which is funny because I thought their San Diego team did a great job with the story in Red Dead.
It's been a while since someone equated a game's sales with the game's quality.
At any rate, it's never too soon in the year to predict annualized Wii doom!
Microsoft's Xbox 360 is poised to outsell the Nintendo Wii on a 12-month basis in the U.S. in March, according to a Friday research note from Cowen analyst Doug Creutz.
"We believe that [March] will represent the first time since the early days of this console cycle that Xbox 360 hardware will outsell the Wii on a [trailing twelve-month (TTM)] basis," he said.
That means the Xbox 360 will have led Wii in total sales in the U.S. from March 2010 to March 2011, if Creutz' forecast comes to fruition.
"This illustrates the significant shift that has gone on over the last year in the console space," he said. "The Wii was outselling the 360 and PS3 combined on a TTM basis as recently as January 2010, and was outselling the 360 alone by 2:1 on a TTM basis in December 2009 and 1.5:1 in October 2010."
Creutz said that over the last three years, trailing 12-month total hardware sales across Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii have been around 17-19 million units, "so this does represent a share shift as opposed to just a decline for the Wii."
Microsoft has seen a boost in sales that analysts say is driven by the release of the heavily-marketed Xbox 360 Kinect sensor.
Microsoft sold 535,000 Xbox 360s during February in the U.S. to lead console sales, according to NPD Group, representing a 27 percent year-on-year rise. Nintendo Wii was up 14 percent during the month to 454,000. PS3 was up 12 percent to 403,000.
"We believe the significant shift in hardware sales towards HD consoles is a positive ongoing development for the U.S. publishers, who earn the majority of their sales on the 360/PS3," Creutz added.
Personally, I loved GTAIV. Though the disconnect between 'in-game' Niko and 'in-cutscene' Niko could be really hard to get past. 'I am torn and conflicted about this life of crime!' *robs bank, shoots three dozen police on the way out*

Rockstar is on my list of places I would enjoy working at if I ever left BioWare, because I find some of the narrative stuff they do to be absolutely compelling and I would love to be a part of that.
RDR was, as you said, a game where I didn't really feel as though my in-game Marston and my in-cutscene Marston were different people. I was a lawman and a good person in-game, and in-cutscene I was the same way. Unlike GTAIV, where I did have to mentally separate the two.
