PS3 is overdue a massive price drop in the UK too.
Amazon have the 250 Gig 360S on crazy sale at Just £159.
The PS3? £229 for the cheapest model - the 160 Gig Slim. The 320 Gig is £269. That is just too much at this stage.
Wonder if Amazon know something we don't - is there a new 360 bundle on the way? Are they trying to shift all non-Kinect bundles? They can't be making much money on 360's at that price - it's cheaper than a Wii! Doesn't seem to be a widely-adopted new price point, and the 360 is selling well here, so why such an aggressive discount?
I just asked about the dozen or so people who bought one three years ago and promptly stuck it in a drawer some where if I could borrow it. Said they'd dig it out for me. Probably next to the Wii some where.
It's a way to fix it. It's a better idea than I've ever heard before. I haven't actually ever heard any other idea of how to fix this problem. Do you have a better solution than simple self control? Or parents actually being parents? If the government doesn't fix the problem, who will? Not the companies that profit from this habitual behavior.
Games Industry: The new drug dealers!
I am absolutely playing devil's advocate in this post. I'm hopelessly addicted to the product myself.
Blizzard themselves tried to do something about this by having a debuff that would kick in after 12 hours. They had to abandon it after the immense QQ'ing from the beta players.
So Edge posted what they believe will be the major trends for this year. Full article's at the link, but here's the gist:
Smartphone games will keep gaining momentum
More "blockbusters"
Indies will thrive
Retailers will struggle
The Wii will decline
"Social game addiction fears"
Spending more money on a single game (collector's editions, DLC)
Slow adoption of 3D
Console wars waged over entertainment, not games
Tablets!

I know it's highly unlikely, but do we know any numbers for how Deadly Premonition sold? I just finished it last night and would dearly love SWERY to get to make another game and build on its ideas.
The guy you whine about in the podcast thread whenever you have the chance :P (I'm not getting you mixed up, right?), Shane Bettenhausen, was on the 8-4 podcast around TGS and from what I remember, he said it did really well. He also said that he'd just been talking with SWERY a day or two beforehand about his next project and I think I remember him saying that they (Ignition) would be interested in publishing it.
Might be someone like Darlan? I don't have any posts in that thread. But either way, that's great news. Cheers!

I did, right after I signed into my account after suspecting someone of hacking my gamertag (password now changed, I hope I'm in the clear). I was suspicious, but if everyone's getting one, I guess it's just a promotion?
I thought it was a birthday present But yeah, sometimes they do this. Especially since you have only a week to spend those points. Time to find a 80msp RB song.

If I already have a bunch of funbux, will it spend these 80 points first?
Because if thats the case, looks like I'll be buy my first (and only) avatar item, and just mentally pretend they sent me my "Old Gods of Asgard" T-shirt.

To be fair, I would expect much the same thing from an article attempting to predict the next year. Because it's predictable stuff. Something really unexpected and leftfield will be really hard to predict.

Brainiac's official predictions of 2011:
*Kinect will continue to sell a lot
*Kinect games will continue to follow the "Wii" trend
*Move will continue to be forgotten
*Kinect Sports 2
*Pachter will say something stupid while claiming that Nintendo is doomed because they didn't listen to him
*Activision will make another Call of Duty; it will sell bucketloads
*Ubisoft will continue to NOT make Beyond Good and Evil 2
*Nintendo will continue to sell systems, not sell games, hate third parties, and make another gazillion dollars with the 3DS
I heard the developers were a bunch of fatcats just churning out derivative sequels to ride on their established success while screwing over their customers with microtransactions and unimaginative gameplay content generic brown bland boring funbux and avatars.
BoDVII was one of my first thoughts for a purchase.

New Iwata Asks, and this one is very interesting...especially when it shows how much of an old school programming geek Iwata is.

Didn't we have a predictions thread 2-4 years ago? Don't know why we haven't had one each year, it's fun.
My quick predictions:
No new consoles announced. Small leaks sure but no actual announcements. Those will be saved for 2012.
Price drops for the PS3 and Wii.
Bethesda will buy out another promising studio.
Activision will close down another promising studio.
Game of the year is a repeat of 2009 (Batman vs Uncharted) but with a couple extra contenders (mostly Portal 2, Zelda and Mass Effect 3).
Ratchet & Clank Collection released leading up to All 4 One. Brainiac buys a PS3 one week before the price drop. :P
Everything is still dooooomed.
I also wonder how long it'll be before someone buys out Codemasters. Then again, with the UK industry in its current state, I'm not sure anyone would bother.
From that Iwata Asks, Nintendo's philosophy in a nutshell:
Iwata: It's about doing what no one else has done before. If surprising the consumer is the goal, taking the same method will cause the consumer to see everything as the same, and only the way to keep on surprising them will be to always adding up to the sheer volume of the game play or beefing up its gorgeousness, and taking that strategy would ultimately kill the company. That's why we should always focus on other methods and make it "exponential" instead of simply adding in factors.
Why don't more game companies realize this before it is too late?

Dead Space 2 to be neglected for Game of the Year
Deus Ex as well.
Attention needlessly grabbed by headlines claiming "Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo working on new console?"
Gawd I hope we get a Ratchet and Clank collection.
Off topic question while I'm at it: is there anything in the Uncharted 2 Game of the Year edition that really affects single-player? Near as I can tell it's mostly for multiplayer. I need to finally pick that up.
Also off-topic, it's funny people say the rich get richer and the poor get poorer:

Truth be told...I wouldn't care....know why? Because I would be too busy reliving a collection of awesome blast em up/platformers that I currently no longer own. I love that series so very much. My PS3 would be the Ratchet system as I'd have the collection, the two PS3 Ratchet games, and All 4 One that I would be able to play and catch up on.

You guys do know that most stores will refund you the difference if the price drops within a couple weeks of the day you purchase it, right?
They do so because it's easier and cheaper for them to just refund you the difference than to have you return the original product and rebuy a second model at the lower price.
Facebook games giant resolves dispute with Digital Chocolate over copyright infringement
FarmVille creators Zynga have settled out of court after being sued by online game developer Digital Chocolate.
The latter claimed Zynga’s popular 2008 Facebook title Mafia Wars infringed on copyright of its own 2004 mobile game of the same name, according to The Recorder.
Terms of the settlement have not been disclosed and neither party has offered comment so far.
Zynga’s Mafia Wars has previously faced litigation issues. In 2009, the company settled a similar copyright infringement suit with Mob Wars creator David Maestri.
The Facebook games giant was also involved in a dispute with the Disney-owned Playdom in November, this time claiming Playdom’s Mobsters infringed on the Mafia Wars trademark.
With a development history spanning multiple developers and publishers and over 14 years, generating a complete list of people that worked on Duke Nukem Forever is not a simple matter. But developer Gearbox Software is seeking to do just that with a new web site devoted to identifying and recognizing everyone who had a hand in the project.
"We couldn’t possibly internally identify every person touched by this game from the inception of Duke Nukem Forever," Gearbox community manager Chris Faylor said. "It is our desire to recognize and acknowledge the people who have in some way been a part of the legacy and evolution of the game."
The site includes options for employees of DNF developers, publishers and contracotrs, as well as notable press, community members and fans. Applicants are asked to gauge their personal impact on the game at the time and in the imagined final game on a five-point scale.
It's unclear how Gearbox will be vetting the information, or whether it will be included in the game itself when it ships to stores in early May.
