Okay, so I have about $300. I want to spend this on gaming.
Now there's obviously the Wii. I still don't have one and I
want one. But they're still impossible to come by in my city so I don't know if or when I'll finally be able to get my hands on one.
The DS Lite: really hot. I don't even have a DS. Clearly, huge gaming possibilities here.
The PS two: Okay, I have a fat PS2 but it's dying and there are a lot of NIS games I'd still like to play.
I'm thinking maybe the DS Lite, FFVI, New SMB, and use the rest of the money on something less wasteful.
PS two: I have a couple of games I haven't been playing due to aforementioned slow dying process, and also a Gamecube backlog I'm catching up on.
I'm leaning heavily towards the DS right now, but can anyone make a solid argument one way or the other?

Instant fun.
Plus there are some insanely good titles out for the Ds already.
I've purchased four DS titles this week. Yes, they were all on clearance- BUT STILL.

Yeah, but I don't have that much time for gaming anyhow these days, so that's less of a terrible thing. I won't be out looking for new titles too often.

You'll find you have much more time with a handheld than with a traditional console.
Go with the DS. I've bought more DS games than games for anything else except maybe my beloved Dreamcast, and I've owned the thing less than a year now.
And Phoenix Wright. And Mario.
There's also the whole "not competing for the TV" thing too.
CUZ THERE'S SOMETHING IN THE MIDDLE AND IT'S GIVING ME A RASH
I am not interested in that title whatsoever :P
These two, a little and a lot. How much game play is there in PW? I want something I can chew on for a while, you know?

- DS: Can be played on public transport and during breaks at school/work
- Wii: Great fun if you have gamer friends who will come over and play
- PS2: You probably already have games for it, and it has an insane amount of games to choose from, and many of them are now Greatest Hits.
If you spend lots of time away from home, then the DS is probably the best choice.
Well, my bus rides are short and I'm not trustful of the strangers on the bus, so I won't be playing it much there, and I certainly won't be at work. But I do live with the girlfriend, so something I can enjoy in the same room as her without taking over the TV would be well received.

The Wii, while nice, would only leave you with the cash for one game. Unfortunately, despite what people here will you tell you, there's only a couple games worth owning on the Wii at this time. One of them is also available on Gamecube and doesn't really benefit that much from Wii controls.
The PS2 also has an extensive library as well but you already own one and it sounds like it still works. You can hold off on buying this one for a while.

With the DS, it's $129.99, it plays any GBA game as well as the DS games, and there's a large enough quantity of can't miss games in both formats that you could throw darts at a wall and still come out with nothing but great games.
Also you mentioned interest in FFVI. You can play what are arguably definitive versions of all the Final Fantasy games that are worth playing on the DS. You've got I and II on a single GBA cartridge that's very common. FFIV Advance can be had for $19.99 at many locations now. FFIII and FFV haven't gone down in price yet but they got large releases and won't vanish like an Atlus game. VI of course comes out this week.
You also mentioned interest in New Super Mario Bros. You'll also have access to great games like Wario Land 4, Super Princess Peach, Ninja Five-O, Gunstar Super Heroes, etc.
If you don't care about getting the box+manual, there's a very large quantity of very high quality GBA platformers and RPGs you can get for $10 each.
DS Lite seems like the best option for sheer quantity of awesome games you'll get within your budget.
Buy and enjoy.
On the Wii: Yeah, I know, it soaks up most of the funds on its own. Honestly, if I could find one easily, I'd probably grab it on an impulse and pick up TP too, but I have no idea when I'll even find one locally.

That, to me, is an unbelievably high percentage.
The PS2 is a good system too. And I'm looking for a Wii myself. And I love my Xbox 360.
But the Nintendo DS is just distilled awesome with an awesome and ever-growing innovative, intelligent, and fun game library.
I need to play my original cartridge and see the difference again. The GBA one did feel way too easy. I did like how they altered FFII though. It didn't FIX the game per se but it helped.
I like IV quite a bit just for its re-translation. It's better than the PSX re-release and far better than what we got on the SNES. There are some silly glitches that somehow made it in but it's nothing game breaking.
V isn't changed all that much from what I can tell so far, just a slightly better translation.
Some decent imports to be had on the DS as well with no hassle if you can get past the language barrier.
DS.
DS.
The way they changed the magic system in FFI would have been enough to break the game on its own, but then they had to go and turn all of the enemies into complete pussies on top of it. Oh, but the way they threw in seemingly never ending dungeons with nearly invincible bosses that felt obviously tacked on, that really covered for it.
FFV would be really, really awesome to have, though. Was that 3D version of FFIII any good?

It's pretty damn good actually. A nice merger of the classic gameplay with a more beefed up job system and a much slicker interface. Some people didn't like the graphics in motion but I was able to look past that. Might want to try before you buy. FFV GBA is very good though, no complaints.
Man I got my friend to start up the NES cartridge and you're right. Loading up a save makes me remember how they basically outright turned off all the enemy's more powerful spells for the GBA version. Big mistake.
Just a DRE.

10 or 20 hours really isn't that much though. It's good, but not if there's no replay.
TO: Knight of Lodis had like 40 hours per game, and you had to play it multiple times to unlock everything. That's a huge value in my mind. 20 hours is a decent value, but I'd like to grab something a little heavier.
What's the generally considered shit-hot puzzler on the DS? I'm pretty fucking awesome at Tetris, but I don't know if I need another Tetris.
CUZ THERE'S SOMETHING IN THE MIDDLE AND IT'S GIVING ME A RASH
I'm getting a DS this week, pheez. Looks like a good deal.
It's not that there's so many good games. It's the combination of the fact that there's so many good games, and yet they're all so short, and many of them not particularly replayable. They're awesome experiences while they last, but then you don't go back to them. So, unlike with any other system, where you're ok with playing an AAA game again, when you're playing the DS, it's alot easier to get caught into buying a crapload of games in a very short time.
Phoenix Wright is the longest game I've played so far on the DS, and even then, it's only about as long as a medium-length game on any other system.. so if you DO get a DS, make sure to get PW. But I'd definitely suggest you go with the Wii, myself.
I'M A TWITTER SHITTER
:^:
Unfortunately nothing really touches Tactics Ogre on either system. Advance Wars: Dual Strike is fantastic but only if you don't care about storyline. The story is just as stupid and naively written as the US GBA iterations (can't comment on the Japanese writing).
That said, Advance Wars: Dual Strike is a great turn based strategy game. Though it's "strategy" is more akin to Desert Commander or Military Madness where the "strategy" is based more on terrain exploitation and the efficient construction of units rather than purely being based on formations. It's also $19.99 now. There's multiplayer, several differnet challenge modes to play, more commanders to unlock for the extra modes and colors for them. It will definitely keep you occupied if itis your thing.
I don't know what part of NJ you're in, but I have to agree with you. Here we're getting the Wii MORE often than we get the DS Lite.
im in jersey too and can't find one for anything.
My Best Buy and FutureShops both list the DS Lite in stock, in at least one colour if not both. Not a single Wii in town from what I've heard though. A woman I work with makes weekly phone calls because she wants one for her kids (yeah I'm sure) but keeps hearing that they aren't staying in stock for more than a few hours.

I'm in the Monmouth county area, and haven't been able to find anything in this area for about 4 weeks. Fortunately, though, I work in Manhattan and managed to snag a black one for my girlfriend after calling the Nintendo World Store everyday until they finally said they had it (and rushing there during my lunch break to grab one before it ran out). Now I kind of want one for myself and am not looking forward to starting the hunt again..I really think I had less of a hassle getting my Wii
I put more time into Bleach DS than all my other games combined last year. Then you have games like Elite Beat Agents and Trauma Center, where replaying for score is a big part of the appeal. (I kinda cheesed my way to all S-ranks in Trauma Center, though.) I have about 10 games for the DS, and I'd say that maybe half of those are "must haves," but they pretty much all carried me through 2006.
I'd go with either the DS or PS2 for now.
Just Touch Detective and Trace Memory really. I enjoyed both despite their flaws.
Trauma Center's story is passable, although it's nowhere near as well composed as PW's.
Also, while not incredibly deep, the "story" in Elite Beat Agents makes the game well worth playing. The addictive and enjoyable gameplay is really just a bonus.
