I am actually pretty sure that Leapfrog/Ben Urich story was the first thing Bendis ever wrote for Marvel

I totally forgot to talk about this, but Spider Island: Spider-Girl #1 was pretty awesome. Amazing art, first of all. Kinda has a European look to it. The dialogue was sharp, cutting down on the amount of overdone exposition that plagued Tobin's previous effort on Spider-Girl. Story-wise, it also managed to set up an intriguing story, packed with action and humor, in just nineteen pages. And the last-page reveal was a great, "O'snap!" moment.

But, Tobin's Hobgoblin is still pretty annoying.

Spider-Island: Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu #1 was also pretty good. Like Spider-Girl, this book has great art, possessing something of a hazy, dream-like feeling. I also have to commend the costume design, which for the first time, really gave a kind of patched-together feeling to the Fake Spider-Men's costumes. On the story though, it comes up a bit short.

It doesn't have the interesting, human moments from Cloak and Dagger, or the wild action that comes from various factions butting heads, as with Spider-Girl. Rather, it's a more simply structured plot; Shang-Chi has nightmares, meets up with Iron Fist and Madame Web to discuss the nightmares, and then has the meaning of them revealed, with a bunch of action sprinkled in throughout. It didn't really leave me in suspense, even with a surprise betrayal capping off the third act.

That said, I do think it actually rewards a closer reading, because I did like it more the second time around.
For instance, in Shang Chi's dreams, when he's the spider-powered assailant, he mentions that he feels no joy in it, just sorrow and obligation, or something to that effect. Which means that it's entirely possible that Bride of Nine Spiders isn't really in control of her actions, and may be acting at the behest of another. Which adds a nice wrinkle to things, and could be a good reveal later on.

There's also Madame Web's brief foreshadowing, about two women, one who shines (Dagger) and one who falls into darkness (Spider-Girl, falling under Kingpin's sway?), as well as a spider who isn't a spider (Anti-Venom or Venom, I imagine) and a man who isn't a man (Ben Reilly? Kaine?). Either way, it's a bunch of potentially interesting foreshadowing.

That said? This issue really made me wish Shang had a more fully rounded character. I understand that he's been traditionally portrayed as the stoic, meditative type, but it's really not much fun to read about. This is thrown into stark relief during his interactions with Iron Fist, who immediately comes off as more relatable and fun, just due to his Average Joe temperament, when dealing with all kinds of craziness.

I mean, Shang's basically Marvel's answer to Bruce Lee, yeah? Why not give him some of that Bruce Lee swagger? A little cockiness and an impish grin could do a lot to make Shang Chi not just another pensive martial artist.

It was a little annoying how Shang-Chi was dead-set against enjoying his new spider-powers.

Shang Chi acted rather cocky in that issue of Wisdom he was in, even able to stand on the ceiling and all those ancient chinese secrets.

Had to happen. Venom VS Anti-Venom in a couple of preview pages from a CBR Interview with Axel Alonso. There's also a few details on less spider-related projects like DnA's "Villains for Hire" and then there's this little line...
A few characters will really pop in 2012. Keep an eye on Nova, on Hope, on Hawkeye. After this summit, who knows?

    Nova? Oh yes.

Chance - there's a face I haven't seen in a while. Think I only saw him in a team up with Cardiac once before. Kinda like his deal.

I've really liked Spider Island so far, and I didn't expect too - seemed like yet another gimmicky 'everyone is super-hero X now!' story. And I like me some Ramos art too.

I'm enjoying Spider-Island Carlie. Her enthusiasm is great.

And Shang Chi training Spider-Man is the pants.

So the lady behind the jackal to nobody's suprise is...
The Queen, and the spider-virus has another stage where it'll turn people into man-spiders, thats what happened to shocker for him to get the six arm thing. Also carlier pretty much knows peter=spider-man at this point.

    It's him telling Carlie surely.

    I have a few guesses
    obvious is him telling carlie
could also be ben telling someone(if he truly comes back)
could be some kind of spartcus thing

Also I was thinking, if that mysterious lab dude turns out to be ben, he better have a damn good reason for not revealing himself to peter earlier, I mean it's kind of a dick move.

Maybe he is uncovering his secret identity

Thus revealing OMD as Joe Quesada's crusade against redheads.

  • TeriferinTeriferin Registered User regular
I think the best outcome is him just admitting it to Carlie.
Because she totally hasn't figured it out already.

    "And so can you."

Or, he's in front of a bunch of villains or something, but he's backed by a bunch of powered New Yorkers, and all of them start saying 'I'm Spider-Man.' Although after the last issue, I don't know how that would work out.

I didn't really start reading ASM until Big Time, so I skipped the whole Brand New Day.

So that's how they explained everyone forgetting his identity? Dr. Strange put a magic spell?

Reed, Stark, and maybe Xavier were also involved somehow.

So there's definitely going to be some sort of scarlet spider running around, if it's not Ben I'm guessing it'll be MJ.

Seems a little aggressive to be MJ.
If it's not Ben, well, there are two current players in Spider-island that stand to have drastically different power sets come the end of the event, and who were both already very Spider-man like
    Eddy Brock and Kaine
    .

But I have a feeling it'll either be Ben or something out of left field.

    Holy Crap at ASM 671
Lab dude #6 is Morbius (no ben reilly :( ). So Peter decides to try to help horizon, where they have successfully devolved the cure. Madam Web also goes to horizon to get them to disable the spider sense jammers since they disable her psychic powers. The queen uses the connection with JJJ to see that they are making the cure, so she sends the tarantula to poison the cure.
So Tarantula / Peter fight, while the horizon peeps are trying to adjust the spider jammers, so that it'll give Peter his spider-sense back. Just as tarantula is about to throw a defeated Peter/Posion into the cure, he gets his spider-sense back and flips tarantula into the cure. He comes out of the cure being a clean clone of peter again (spider powers remain, so Kaine is almost for sure the new Scarlet Spider). Ends with the queen having ULTIMATE POWER, since she has full connection to the spider people with the jammers gone.
