So all the hype for Spider-island makes me wan't to jump into Spider-man. I will be getting the trade for Spider-island when it comes out. Do I need need to get anything from before? Also have the post-Spider-island started yet?
I jumped back into Spider-Man after several years at #648 with Big Time - had a blast with every issue straight through the Hobgoblin and Spider-Slayer story arcs. I missed out on a few of the single issues after 657, the Fantastic Four/Human Torch one. Picked it up again with the Spider-Island issues.
I had missed a lot - never read the One More Day stuff. But I was able to pick up what was going on pretty easily - there's new relationships going on, love triangle, etc, and we're off. Spider-Island itself does a pretty good job of catching you up on the more recent happenings too. But it's hard to go wrong with Big Time, and it also helps set the stage for the big Sinister Six event that's been building in the background.

You can start fine with 666 which is the prologue to Spider-Island, it's an issue that more or less introduces newer readers to the current status quo.
672 spoilers!, A big moment that a lot of spider fans will be REALLY happy with
They fight the queen, Peter let's kaine use his "big time" suit to help out. Peter and MJ go up to a big radio tower for Peter to use to Octobots from ASM 600 to distribute the cure on a mass scale. This weakens the Queen, and Kaine ends up with the killing blow, and while Peter was using the octobots, Mj whispered "I Love You" . Spider-Island is pretty much how an event should be done, Mostly great mini series, non stop action in the main series.

was it reciprocated?
MJ loving Peter, that's no problem and works because she's an angel, but unless Peter returns it or instead says "well gee thanks but Carlie sure is super!" it would look more like MJ is going to be forever alone or like that lady from Great Expectations

Nah, Peter didn't even hear her. Unless he's playing Spider-Dumb, but I doubt that.
I think you're probably right about the forever alone bit with her. Pete's got a good thing going with Carlie and doesn't look like they are anywhere near a split. Some really good moments between him and MJ, though. They can have those and not be forced back into a relationship.
I could see Kaine becoming the new Scarlet Spider. Putting such a focus on him doesn't make sense unless they're planning to do something with him later.
Though on the other hand I mean I will enjoy Peter having a "brother" / "brotherly" relation ship again. I mean it's not like he has the human torch or anything right now.
Also Ramos can sure draw himself some beautiful art.

Venom #8 was a good read and looks like it probably needed to be mentioned in ASM, because it was basically what happens when the Power Rangers would defeat the villain before it turned into a big monster for the robots to fight. Could have worked better had Remender not used a letter to narrate the story for most of the issue, it wasn't that good and took away from the importance of the last issue's ending, on top of making it read like a typical Loeb book.
I do think the Flash/Betty thing needs to be resolved by issue #12, because it's one of those things that dealing with a secret ID that works every few issues just to let everyone know, but if the series intends to bring it up every issue it just becomes more tedious than a sitcom romance.
Dammit I really should have been reading the SI Venom stuff huh? I was planning on trade waiting for it but apparently it will be lumped into all the other tie-ins.

I'm also trade waiting on this, and according to Amazon, the SI Venom stuff is in the Spider Island hard cover in January. This is what Amazon says the hard cover has:
So that garbage spell that peter had that was protecting ANYONE from figuring out who he was is now gone, since in 668 when he did his new yorker speech, he "technically" outed himself to everyone, so Carlie figures out, freaks out and breaks up with him. Kaine leaves New York with the stealth suit (he's wearing a blue hoodie when in the airport lol). Peter gets a cure vial for MJ and cures her spider powers. Madamme webb also tells him he's going to have a nother big "loss" coming up (probably during that ends of the earth thing)
Oh yeah forgot about this. Jackal is still alive (guy that died was a clone), and her transformation/all this stuff is from peter's spider tusk from when she transformed him into a spider.

So it seems I'll have to pick up the super-sized collection of Spider-Island tie-ins if I want to read the Venom stuff. I read all the one-shots except for I spider New York and Heroes for Hire. Were the 3 issue minis any good?
I'M NOT FINISHED WITH YOU!!!

Heroes for Hire was more HfH #13, not really important to Spider-Island, it just advanced the Paladin/Misty relationship.

Mary Jane, dead in #700.
Well, it was nice knowing you.
(okay, not really..never liked her so heres hoping)
I think it says something about the state of the Spider-man "empire" during the last few years that Slott got rid of certain baggage so soon after Quesada stepped down.
That's a silly statement, I mean first of all it's not like Quesada is gone from marvel (still has a huge influence I'm sure.). Second of all, Slott didn't really get rid of ANY baggage, in fact it's more like he embraced all the baggage, and still has made fantastic spider-man stories.

I see it more of going back to who Peter is. He always find relationships that are good for him, but eventually are destroyed due to his being Spider-Man. From Betty Brant to Gwen Stacey, to Mary Jane, to now Carlie, it always happens to him. It really is being true to the character.

It happened with Felicia, sort of
It was a really fun little event.
Nah, Peter didn't even hear her. Unless he's playing Spider-Dumb, but I doubt that.
Relatively speaking anyways.

A pretty good mini-series overall, but it never really hit the highs of the first issue.

yessssss
fingers crossed!
Now this thread has me wanting to go back to the start of Big Time.
Argh.
What else that I found to be great is how Slott's incorporated things from The Other without it coming off as fucking with the character.
Well, it was nice knowing you.
