I love the sound but I've never known where to start when it comes to this type of music. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :D

    *points to thread title*

Are you looking for older stuff or more contemporary big band?

Either is fine. As long as it stays true to the title.

Listen to this streaming radio station.

    Or:
    Count Basie
    Duke Ellington
    Benny Goodman
    Louie Armstrong
    Glenn Miller
    Miles Davis
    Artie Shaw
    Jelly Roll Morton

You could also watch the Ken Burns Jazz documentary to get a good overview, or listen to the first few discs of the soundtrack.

For more modern stuff, check out:

The Dave Holland Big Band (I really like the album "Overtime")
Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band (I don't like these guys, but some people do!)
WDR Big Band (they've played with lots of greats. I was turned on to them by their performance on "Sketches" by Vince Mendoza)
Maria Schneider Band (The only album of hers I own is "Coming About," and it's fantastic. Maria is one hell of an arranger/composer.)

I don't know if this counts for what you're looking for, but this guy does a bunch of modern songs in a similar style

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is pretty good IMO; it's a fusion of big band swing and ska. Used to play alto sax in a big band in college playing standards, I really miss those days.

Just set Pandora to a "Big Band" station and start taking notes.

It's a great show, and you can stream it. It has quit a bit of variety, so you'll certainly find something in there that you really like.
