Getting X-box Live

SolarSolar Registered User regular
edited March 2011 in Help / Advice Forum
OK so I have an X-Box and I want to connect to live in my University halls

We get a free internet connection so I figure this isn't an issue, but only one wall socket (I freely admit internet stuff isn't something IO know a huge amount on). So I can plug my laptop into the wall socket, get internet (since it was fixed) that's all fine, but I want to know, can I connect my X-Box to my laptop and run it through there? The laptop only has one port for an ethernet cable, but I figure if I buy one of those multi-port adaptors it might work.

Is that right? Or do I need to fuck about with something else first? Thanks in advance for taking the time to read my question.

You need a switch, probably, since the Uni is probably issuing DHCP addresses. Contact campus IT and see what they allow and what they recommend. At my college they were cool with running your consoles through their network, but they required you to have the console's serial number and MAC address logged before they allowed it to connect out.

    Seconding that.

Most likely you'll need to register the box with campus IT, but since that doesn't solve your one ethernet jack problem, you should contact them about setting up a switch/router in your room.

I don't know if they'll set it up for you, but buying a wired router is very inexpensive.

To actually answer your question, yes you can run the internet through your laptop into the xbox360. You'll need a 2nd LAN port, and depending on your OS, it can be as easy as clicking a button.

If your laptop is a MAC, it can still be done but requires a little bit more than a button click.

Right, this was what i was hoping

So I guess you can buy a little multi-block thing and just run the laptop and X-Box as a LAN? That's what I want, to be honest.

It all depends on how your university handles machines on the network. Many universities check the mac address of the machine connecting, and you have to register with them.

at my mates uni. You have to regester your computers mac adress to allow it to get online. So he wasnt able to use his xbox and pc at the same time. He got his xbox online by changeing its mac adress to the same as his pc.

almost (all?) routers are also switches, which is what you need.

to make most routers stop routing, you just disable DHCP in the options and then it's just a switch.

if it's a wireless router, then it is also a wireless access point.

This right here. If you're uni registers the MAC address, find your MAC address on the comp and manually change your xbox 360s to match. Voila!

The easiest I've done this is with Windows 7, the process is almost completely automatic. Possible with XP, annoying with 2k/ME or 98. One is your internet connection, one you set to 'share'.
