Yeah, Spike traps definitely seem like the best option. I tried out a strategy of using Arrow Walls with Tar Pits to slow them down so they'd get hit multiple times by the arrows, but it was by far the most difficult setup. The tar pits, for as expensive as they are, don't really slow them down that much. Spike traps are cheaper and actually deal damage. Once you run out of floorspace to build Spikes, build Arrow Walls.

I also don't see why anyone would buy barrels. They do some okay AOE damage, but that's 200 dollars for something that goes away after one use.

spike traps aren't going to do much against the larger green guys and the flying bat things

Demo was pretty entertaining. I did get some mouse hand fatigue from clicking the crossbow button a million times. That might be mitigated using a controller.

Still no takers on the 360 version? That's probably where I'll end up playing unless there's something terribly wrong with it.

Going for headshots is probably the better choice. Can only get them when the crosshair has returned to the middle and turned green.

Ah, I'll have to try that -- didn't recognize that mechanic. Tutorial is pretty sparse in that area.

I also played until the third level before I accidentally right-clicked and discovered the magic stun-shot.

When trailers for this game first started popping up, I pretty much wrote it off as yet another forgettable tower defense style game, except this time with mediocre shooting mechanics tacked on. Having played the demo, though, I'm actually pleasantly surprised. Even with a miniscule percentage of the total weapons and stages, I still found myself happily spending an extra hour redoing levels with alternate strategies, like relying primarily on the built-in acid vats instead of spikes or arrows in The Corner, or obliterating an entire wave of 50+ orcs in a single glorious trap action in The Fork. I can hardly imagine how ridiculously awesome things are going to get on Nightmare difficulty with a full arsenal.

Comes out on October 19th. Still seems surreal given that I was looking forward to it when it had a Winter 2010 release.

Wait. I have to buy Dungeon Defenders this month now too. Thank you.

I'm really liking the tar pits combined with archers, as it slows them down enough for the archers to get more shots off, though the spikes a really good too if i need to just lay down more damage traps.

arrrrrgh the wait is killing me, the demo could have used like one more level to sate my thirst until the actual release on pc, its hard to make super cool combos with spike traps, tar pits, and wall arrows.

springboard would allow me to have lots of fun while waiting :(

Hit me up if you ever want to coop this. I play Sanctum a good amount, and would Iron Grip also.

I've been eyeing this game, but without coop, it's definitely a sale for me when it hits $5.

I had hoped score attack would help with the wait until the full game comes out, But I am sitting at the top of my friends list on all levels. I assume that is more to do with you all not playing for score rather than some exceptional skill on my part.

seriously someone beat my scores so I have something to aim at.

Is there a long hallway? Tar traps and arrow traps alternating. Is the area wide and open. Tar Traps and crossbow.

I completed Act 1 using Tar trap and Arrow Wall exclusively.

Pre-ordered it on PC, it's already out on x-box live? Damn, I want it now please.

It seems like a great way to take short breaks while I'm working on assignments. Blow off some steam by sending orcs through a meat grinder.

Also I hated tar traps at first, I love them now, tar traps and arrow walls are the best thing.

Well, I plowed through the demo twice this morning and I'm sold. Want more. Also, I loved that when I went back and played the first level again they gave me a levitation belt. That with floor spikes is awesome. I think I'm going to try to play it through again using only spikes, and the ability to throw orcs into spikes.

What kind of weavers do you guys use? I end up always picking up the one that buffs archers and paladins, since they are pretty much my go-to defense on any level. I can't get more than two skulls on the later levels though, any advice? One trick I been using is just taking the archers off the top of ledges and putting them right behind the paladins, easier for them to get more shots but it does put them at risk. If you got the health bonus for paladins though, the archers should be able to pick em off just fine.

Yea so if you got any later level advice on how to get a 5 skull rating then that would be awesome. So far I just been milking the combo of paladins, archers and that money platform thing. After that it's arrow spikes or tar traps in case something slips by my main defense.

I think the majority of us bought the game on pc so we have no advice on strategies yet, that said i cannot for the life of me beat one of my friends on the leaderboard for the corner, the dude scored like 47k and I can never clear 44k

Maybe the full game gets more interesting later on?

Click the stats page to check how the score is tabulated.

You get a lot more points for trap kills than killing them yourself.

  • TheKoolEagleTheKoolEagle Registered User regular
I did one run-through where I only shot guys who made it past the arrows and spikes, actually I think I scored less then I usually do due to low killstreak, only like 14 on that one.

I know the big ones are kill streak and trap kills, but its hard to balance killstreaks without shooting too many orcs to lower your score

I loved the demo, but can't convince myself to buy it for $15, given the content. If there was one of those buy-3-get-1-free deals Steam does, I'd be all over this.

Also, lack of coop mode makes me a sad panda.

Has anyone worked out precisely how the combo mechanic works? My natural assumption is that it counts how many different trap and weapon effects an orc had been affected by within the last X amount of time before its death, but no matter how many times I try in the demo I can never seem to make it work consistently. Sometimes spike traps immediately followed by arrow traps over tar gets X3 combos, but not always. Sometimes randomly spraying tons of crossbow bolts at orcs getting shot by arrow traps while standing on tar will get me half a dozen combos, other times it doesn't get me anything. It's be easier to figure out if I had more traps and spells to work with...

From personal experience. If you set up a tar trap hallway, cover the walls with arrow walls, and at the end of the hallway have Guardian archers pointed that way, you'll get nothing but x3 combos. A good map to display this on is Chokepoint.

  • WyvernWyvern Registered User regular
Well, I can't actually test that, since I'm stuck with the demo until Wednesday (PC version). But I'm beginning to suspect that attacks that come from the player directly (like the crossbow) don't count towards a combo unless it deals the killing blow. That would explain why crossbow spamming is so wildly inconsistent, at least.

Spamming the crossbow is silly. Orcs are OHK with a headshot.

It depends. From a distance, head shots are good, but if you get in close, I find that spamming works better to supplement trap damage over a large number of orcs. Sort of like an inaccurate mini-gun. The way I see it, either I can kill 2 orcs myself, or do enough damage so my row of traps can kill 6 orcs, then I'll choose the option that lets my traps kill 6 orcs.

ALT firing the crossbow would work better in that case.
