Getting to know Ableton Live Lite 8!

So I had always been interested in learning some sort of audio engineering for personal interests, but had no earthly idea how to do so, much less start. Recently a buddy of mine gave me a program called Ableton Live Lite 8 that he got with some equipment he bought and gave it to me, which was pretty neat!

Unfortunately, it's also confusing as hell to learn this thing. I've never seen anything quite like this, as it's a lot to take in. I've also run into a few technical issues with this program as well, but i'm sure i'll get a fix on this somehow. I tried registering an account on the Ableton forums, but for some reason or another the administrator has disabled any new registration, so out goes that option!

Has anyone used this program before? If so, what was the best way you learned, and how does it compare to other programs out there? Is there any decent guides out there that offer excellent teaching aid for complete beginners?

Finally, in order to use this program successfully, will I need to pick up any more equipment? For example, I can't seem to get any MIDI clips to work at all, and I think part of that is because you need an actual MIDI instrument in order to imput sounds into the program. I don't exactly have the cash to do that kind of thing now, but could I get along without it or is it an absolute must?

I'm don't use Ableton myself, but I found this link:

    http://www.ableton.com/getting-started

It looks like it's a basic tutorial on getting it going. You should be able to program notes into the midi interface assuming that this package comes with at least 1 software synth. Having a controller keyboard or a synth would maybe help if you plays keys at all I suppose.

You might have to setup a track, add a softsynth to it, and route the signal so that the midi notes are playing through the synth. Midi in and of itself doesn't contain any audio data, just instructions, like note on, which note, held how long, velocity, etc. The link above looks like it has tutorial vids for most of what you want to get things rolling though.

I use Ableton (but not 8).

You don't necessarily need a midi instrument to input notes, you can do it with mouse clicks or even your computer keyboard (you click somewhere on the top-right of the screen but forget what exactly).

In order for any sounds to come out, you do need to drag to the track one of it's built-in sounds, a plug-in softsynth, or a hardware synth that can take in MIDI though.

There should be a built-in tutorial in the help section, it's how I learned to use it (other than trial and error)
