yeah, he was seriously demoted in an extremely callous way, and then one of the co-creators for the jla 3000 book had to talk about it like it was a great thing, while having to deal with the super awkwardness of it atll
and the artist who they gave the gig to probably feels horrible, even though he probably played no part whatsoever in any of this shit
I like the straw man that only Conway's being criticized. But you know, criticizing McFarlane feels like criticizing DiDio—everyone does it, and no one cares.
The Archie gang has canceled a (fictional) trip to Russia because of that country’s draconian anti-gay laws. One law would allow the arrest of foreigners suspected of being gay or “pro-gay,” while another defines any pro-gay statement as pornography and therefore makes it a criminal act to make such statements in front of anyone under the age of 18. Archie cartoonist Dan Parent, who created Riverdale’s first openly gay character, Kevin Keller, is taking a stand in his own way: “Russia should be boycotted, so much so that actually in an upcoming special four-issue story arc I’m writing the Archie gang are going to take a world tour to four countries. Russia was to be one of them. But they’re not going there now. They just can’t and they won’t. They love and support Kevin.”
Not to cheapen the statement being made here but is Archie even known in Russia, much less read?
So, iFanboy is ending all of their website content, and is going to scale back to just their weekly audio podcast.
I'm super bummed out, because the pull list section and the community reviews were outstanding and I'd turn to them pretty frequently when I was wondering if I should pick up a new title or if I wanted to see what other people thought of new creative teams on titles.
I can't think of another fan site on the web with that level of user created content and an audience with such decent tastes. Sites like IGN and Comicsvine feel like they only get high scores on all their user ratings., and they're pretty much useless since it's all diehards praising pretty much any garbage that comes out featuring their favorite characters.

iFanboy was even advertising in comics a while back. Makes me wonder how much cash they had on hand through some venture capital, or comic print ads must be dirt cheap.

They were owned by Graphic.ly for a long time. I imagine that has a large influence on how their site progressed, since Graphic.ly obviously got creamed by comixology, and eventually changed their mission statement and gave ifanboy back to the founders entirely in february.
Before that, their video stuff was a Revision 3 production.

It was an out-of-court settlement, and the details have yet to be released, but Marvel maintains the rights to the character. Still, this seems likely to be seen as a win for Friedrich, as most comic book creators who get into copyright tussles with DC or Marvel don't get any sort of settlement. They get spanked.
Not actually news, but I feel like this is probably the most appropriate thread for it: I just realized that it's already October, and no Graphic Violence Secret Santa has been announced yet. This is one of my favoritest things ever, and I'd hate for the tradition to die. Is anyone planning on running it this year? I would do it, but (1) I'm actually not sure that I'll have the time to organize it this year, and (2) I ran it twice in the last couple of years, and don't want to hog the position.
I just saw Grant Morrison and Gerard Way in conversation at the Sydney Opera house and it was great.
The perks of being a grumpy old man: I got to cut the line and meet Grant Morrison because they were filtering out people that didn't have any interest in meeting Gerard. Not that I hate Way's work or anything I've been reading and digging Killjoys. But come on, Gmoz is the man.
Anyway I asked Grant why his final Batman Inc issue was such a downer and he said that it was because he'd put 6 years into Batman an then DC editorial screwed it up with the N52 and he wanted to express his frustration with editorial interference. So there you go! He also was slightly pissed which was great. And I gave him a sigil that he said he'd eat. He's basically exactly how I wanted him to be.

At Grant Morrison's NYCC 2012 Q&A, a guy sheepishly and stammeringly asked what to do when you do some chaos magic and it kind-of-sort-of backfires, and now you're in trouble. Morrison then said that if you're getting into magic, you have to take responsibility for your screw-ups. He then proceeded to give an example of how to talk a minor demon out of existence.
He finished off by saying "But you deal with it like you deal with anything: anti-depressants and vodka."
So I'm not really sure where to put this but just some food for thought. I was doing a bit of analytics shenanigans and I'd estimate Comics Alliance makes about 43k from advertising a month. Thoughts?

Well they're getting around 1.8 million hits a month according to similarweb. If you calculate it as 24$ per thousand impressions, which is the sort of numbers that I have seen adsense pay out, they'd be making around that much.
Of course they might have a stronger ranking with adsense and be getting paid more per thousand impressions but that's a reasonable baseline.
To me that seems like a good chunk of money but at the same time they do have staff and overheads.

It felt very much like a firing.

Marvel finally settled their dispute with Gary Friedrich over the rights to Ghost Rider.

I never got around to reading that 2nd Circuit decision, but I want to do an IP paper on it. I want to do a bunch of things.
About time, which hopefully means Busiek's in better health. Bet it will get released in its entirety before Nonplayer is finished.
I need to gain weight more than anything
but I've started climbing at least once a week and I've already put on some of the good pounds, which is nice
sorry what were we on about again?
Anyway, I'd like to but I have too much to do already.
