Anyone else super excited about Utilikilts having a booth at PAX East? I know quite a few people who have had a hard time committing to one without first being sized by an employee.
[Forgive me if this has already been mentioned in a thread]
Booth 562 in like the top-center of the expo hall map.
Will they have like a lot of stock to sell or something? I wanna buy and am holding off the risk of ordering online and possibly not getting it in time for PAX.
My old roommate has a Utilikilt, and while I don't think he's going to PAX this year, I can totally vouch for the awesome for him. Pretty sweet that they have a booth this time around!
I made four last year for my group because the cost was too much. My boys love them and will be wearing them for PAX Prime, sorry we don't have the option to go to East. They do Rock!

No, God no! I had a friend who was super excited about these, told me about how he'd just ordered one and all that. Never heard any follow-up though. Then I passed a guy on the street who was wearing a grey pleated miniskirt. Took me a minute to realize it was a utilikilt. I think my buddy had the same realization. He put it on, and realized it looked like a pleated miniskirt. Kilts just don't work if they're not plaid, sorry.
Now you know this means if they call for a "Utilikilt Arrr" during the concerts, there should be more than ONE PERSON responding!!!
Oh Christ, don't remind me of that man. >_>
That said, I shall be sporting my Utilikilt throughout my Enforcer shifts at PAX East as I have at every PAX since 2008. I should probably invest in some knee high socks to ward against the new england cold though, should I venture outside the convention center.

Yeah, when they exhibit at shows or festivals, they usually bring a good stock. The best part is that you can see the kilts in person (if you haven't already seen them on Enforcers) and get sized for one.

Hahaha! To each his/her own I suppose, but I rarely hear of people disliking them when seen on someone who enjoys wearing one. The impression you give really depends on your attitude while wearing it. I am a fan of traditional kilts, but trust me. Utilikilts--with their cargo pockets and amazing insulation--are frakking awesome. That, and I think many people would agree with me on this: they are manly.
I've been going back and forth as to whether or not I should actually buy one. It'll be nice to look at them in person.
As far as raffles and giveaways, I think they'd maybe raffle off one kilt a day or something, but I don't think they'll be giving them away. A little too "Oprah's Favorite Things", if you know what I mean...
last time i saw utilikilts at a con it was gencon last year.
they had their normal 200 dollar kilt on sale for 175, 160 with a special badge or something
fair discount but wasn't fair enough for my broke self
Well, I can't afford one either (we should make a club) but originally, a kilt was just a large rectangular piece of fabric that you pleated and tied on with a belt. So I could probably just make one by going to Fabric Land.... oh man, now I actually DO want to make one! SOMEONE TALK ME OUT OF IT.

Originally? That's all a kilt is now, the straps and buckles just eliminate the need for a belt. Pockets are optional; sporrans are neat but those also cost money.
I have a good sized kilt wardrobe (complete with kangaroo fur sporran). i was a member (and technically i guess still am) of a group called "The brotherhood of the Kilt" yet i have never owned a Utilikilt. I plan on checking them out at next weekend.
also, while its true the original kilt was just a blanket that was gathered up and belted, to get the look of what most people think of as a kilt today, you have to take into consideration the taper of the waist and the spacing of the pleats, where to stitch to make them lay correctly, how big to make the apron and where to begin the pleats, among many other things.
although i do full support anyone who wants to try making their own. specially if they are going to go the "bunch it up and belt it" route. i cant see that being any fun but why the hell not.

I'm sure you've seen them, but they are definitely not a traditional kilt--I'd say still worth checking out.
Also, I've been thinking of getting a real kilt for a while now. Do you have any suggestions on where to go to get fitted for one/to get one? Specifically in the NYC area, but I travel sometimes, so other places could work too.
i've actually bought all my kilts online. there was a lot of trial and error with the sizing though. i'll ask the brotherhood and see if anyone knows of any places in NYC.
BTW if you wanna check out the brotherhood yourself its www.kiltsrock.com
aren't utilikilts the unofficial uniform of the enforcers?
I feel like a higher number of Enforcers sport kilts than I would have expected (I know I'll be adding to that tally this year). Perhaps we should lobby to make them official uniforms... MUGS FTW.

Don't worry!! for many years Utilikilts have been very popular among attendees & enforcers alike!
Your shame/fame is now in DVD format. PAX East Community DVD 2010, Disc 3.

Oh indeed! I counted something like a dozen last year. I'm definitely pro wearing of utilikilt.:)
