SO i've been letting my hair grow out for the last year or so because I wanted to get away from the way I did my hair for the last ten years. It is now pretty out of control but I'm not sure what to do with it or to suggest to the barber when I go in to get it cut. Here is what I used to look like
Here are some pictures of the crazyness as it stands now
Any input is greatly appreciated

I'm going to give the same advice that I give everyone. (From having been a receptionist in a salon for a few years).
Find a good stylist. Ask around, ask people who have hair that you like, etc...Put yourself in their hands and give them a general idea (shorter, longer...) and let them go to town.
And for a hint, cut it shorter. It looks absolutely terrible right now.

I would definitely recommend against going for the Nick Cage look. If you want your hair longer try doing something that isn't just combing it straight back.

He has curly hair. No man looks good with long, curly hair.
Unfortunately, you kind of have the "eastern mediterranean" look going on now, which is generally not a flattering style. Also unfortunately, you're a dude, and we have fewer options when it comes to hair styles in general due to our massive heads, prominent brows, and strong jaws.
You're going to hate me for saying this, but your old hair style looked really good on you.
If you're committed to a longer style, you need to have layers put in to eliminate the "tree" aspect of your hair (note how in the head-on pics, your hair forms a triangle). Similarly, you probably need to put a part in to help your hair fall naturally over your ears. And you will require a very light product to help bring up the curl and reduce frizz.
But as someone who had long hair with a little less curl when I was in high school and college, don't be tied to the hair. A guy with a short, styled haircut will generally look much better than a guy with any sort of long hair.
Sorry but men with long hair.. it generally doesn't look good. Especially not those with curly hair. Go back to your old haircut. I mean change it up a little if you want, but the length of hair you had in the first photo looked far better than the long hair.
The first picture only looks good because it's a DSLR guys, the second ones are shit quality and shit lighting.
But I don't get why you comb your hair back? It draws attention to your nose.
Make your hair like this?
[snip]picture of [strike]Luke[/strike] Owen Wilson with completely different hair type than the OP[/snip]
Because he has super curly hair and [strike]Luke[/strike] Owen Wilson has straight hair? Also, nothing wrong with noses. I know quite a few women who LOVE big noses on guys. Like LOVVVVVE.
He looks like a douche with that short hair, but he also looks bad with that long hair swept back.
Seriously, why not try bangs?
Because he has curly hair and that would look terrible? Are you just trying to cock block the OP or something? With the short hair he is a really good looking guy.
OP with short hair I'd introduce my cute friend to while checking out his butt for my own, uhm, research? OP with current hair I wouldn't look at twice.

You know, probably the original advice of going to a stylist is the best thing you can do for yourself. A good one will better know your options when it comes to curly hair, and will have you in person to let you make whatever face you want.
I'm sure you have more options than "then" and "now", I just don't have the training or instinct to know what those are.

But a year is a long time to grow out hair just to cut it. Would be a damn shame if he didn't at least try.
Not in this case it's not. He has tried, the universal consensus is that it looks bad.

Stop arguing, you've both got your opinions out there.

As a long haired male I must say, that you aren't doing too badly. In fact, don't listen to people on a message board at all, or a stylist. Get yourself to a bar where a generous portion of those you find attractive frequent and see what you can get up to by just being the guy with hair that isn't short. Your hair helps sell your personality, and it nothing buck the trend makes you stand out which is awesome.
Just do what you want, but at least take care of your hair with whatever path you choose to wander down. I am clearly biased, but don't let me force you either way.
A few things to check first:
Have you been getting somewhat regular haircuts every month or two months? This is hugely important in taking care of your split ends and preventing the tips from curling like crazy when they split.
Is a conditioner part of your haircare routine? No, I do not mean an all in one bottle. You need something that comes in a separate bottle and be generous with it. It will help you tame your curls and let you give your hair shape.
Stop using a brush on your hair this instant. You have curly hair. You only BRUSH it vigorously before you shower to help open up your scalp, remove the dead stuff and help treat your drain pipes nicely. After your shower take a COMB to it while it is still somewhat damp to set it the way you like it. The way it dries is how you begin to train your hair. A brush will just enrage your curls in a way you can never fix for the rest of the day.
Stop touching it. Every time you touch it you undo all the efforts of your conditioner and get wisps like crazy.
Now, with that said.... Others have mentioned layering which is critical as well. Parting it down the center of your scalp is frowned upon because it does indeed bring attention to the center line of your face. This isn't good for a number of reasons, chiefly for me and you our noses, but also because in the event that we touch it we are going to brush it to one side of the other with our natural mannerisms. Work with your natural flow and try to part it more to one side.
You aren't going to pull off The Wilson because you don't have weak floppy blonde simple hair. You have manly Gonna-Sell-Your-Fruits-From-My-Boat-Hair-As-You-Enjoy-Your-Cruise-Stop-and-Lust-After-Me-Wildly-Hair. And if that doesn't work, just say you are going it out to donate it and people will shut up quickly.
Or cut it all off. Whatever. It grows back. It is only hair. Enjoy it.
As yet another man who had long hair for a long time but now has short hair, you need to realize that having long hair isn't really the free-wheeling style that rockers and beach bums make you think it is.
Long hair is a shit ton of work, because there's so much more that can go wrong. Even if you get the style right, some random act of humidity or resting your head somehow can ruin the whole shebang. I realized around the end of that time how obsessive I had become about my hair, and that was part of the reason I cut it.
That said, if you're willing to experiment with styles, get a small tub of light hair wax (not gel, ugh) and experiment. Fukatron wasn't entirely off, look around at people with similar hair types as you and styles you like and try to imitate it.
From the pictures, it looks like you just pull your hair back a lot, which is not good at all. I have a similar facial structure (though my hair was much straighter), and overall it's better to try to keep your hair proportional to your face. The Owen Wilson hairstyle works for him because his head still comes off as normal and round, rather than some bizarre shape.

While you do have curly hair, that doesn't mean you can't have long hair- just put some effort into straightening it (some conditioner and product as suggested) and see what it looks like. No harm in trying.
That said, your best result would be to go to a stylist which has also been suggested.

curly hair can be long hair, and can be pulled off effectively. My brother's hair is probably mid back when straight and wet, shoulder length curled. But he pulls it back into pony tails most of the time. And it looks just fine on him.
You, however sad I am to say this, do not look good with the longer hair. I don't know if you have to simply keep growing it out until it reaches that happy long hair stage, or if you should cut your losses and go back to the shorter cut.
Female opinion, you personally look better with the shorter hair cut. And I love men with long hair. Love long hair on a guy.
however, if you're not quite sure, you think you want to keep going for the long hair, then by all means, go to a stylist. Find somebody you trust, who knows what they're doing, and then ask for their opinions, advice, etc. If they can't give you a straight answer yes or no, then get out and find somebody else.
But as it stands, i like the shorter hair right now, however, with the right hair cut, you could be quite dashingly handsome with longer locks. It'll just take more work and effort.
Esh beat me to the advice I always give whenever someone asks for hair advice.
Go to a stylist not a bunch of internerds.
Specifically on the topic of long hair: long hair really doesn't make any guy look better. That is to say, some guys can pull off long hair, but only guys that are good looking regardless of hair length.
Try taking pictures in the same pose but your shorter hair makes you look slimmer. Not sure if its lighting but shorter hairs makes you look like you have a lot of hair and combing it to the front makes you have less forehead.

You are not quite getting this.
He has super curly hair. Bangs on a guy with super curly hair would look TERRIBLE.
And no, he doesn't look like a douche with the short hair. He looks perfectly normal. He's just making a weird face.
When you're a guy with curly hair your options are very, very, very limited.
Because he has curly hair and that would look terrible? Are you just trying to cock block the OP or something? With the short hair he is a really good looking guy.

h-scroll rape, working on getting a smaller size. And the op's hair is not even nearly as curly as that
Or hell, look at the jonas brothers
Yeah, that looks terrible. Please stop giving hair advice. It's like he's from some bad 80s boy band.
