The Meredith Mississippi March took its name from James Meredith who became the first black student to attend the University of Mississippi in 1962, after a ruling by federal courts that he could not be denied admission. On June 5, 1966, Meredith and a few companions, began a walk from Memphis , Tennessee to Jackson, Mississippi to encourage African-Americans to register and vote. He called it a 'march against fear'. On June 6th Meredith was shot in an assassination attempt.
This photo won a pulitzer btw.
The next day, leaders of the major civil rights organisations, Dr. Martin Luther King of the SCLC, Floyd McKissick of CORE, and Stokely Carmichael of SNCC, announced that they would resume his match, and invited people from all over the country to join them. This ultimately resulted in the coining of the term "Black Power" after Carmichael was arrested during the march.

Meredith graduated in 1963 with a degree in political science. His son Joseph Meredith, as a result of his father's actions, graduated as the most outstanding doctoral student in the School of Business Administration at University of Mississipi. He also has degrees from Harvard and Millsaps.
The only way this world gets better is by taking positive action, regardless of how painful it may be. The Civil Rights movement is not constrained to any race or generation. I want to discuss in this thread how we can put to action making this world a better place for us and our kids.
I am, by definition, a lazy bastard, so I am not going to march through several states while being shot. But I really want to make a difference in a couple of areas. I want to: become a big brother in the big brothers big sisters program, and volunteer at the LA Foodbank to help deliver fresh fruit to the inner city. I am going to make some phone calls today and see if I can make that happen. I actually have something set up with the LA Foodbank already.
Let me know what you guys are doing/want to do as part of the current Civil Rights movement. If you are doing something awesome in this world, let us know, be an inspiration.
Also derp.

This may be a minor point of contention, but wouldn't you ideally like to just be open as a lesbian woman?

It's good work if your heart's in it.
damn right, worth every second
Isn't this a very sad job, though? I'd find it tough making connections with people that are terminally ill, just because I wouldn't want to get hurt when they passed.
Yeah, it can be really depressing. The worst I experienced was when one of the patient's was my age, it was really hard to think about someone (I was 17 at the time) not even getting to start their life. But, I like to think I could really help/touch a lot of people that feel abandoned by modern medicine/society (and sometimes family).

Isn't abusive debt collector an oxymoron? Those silly geese are angry and misleading.
N...no.
An oxymoron is a little giant.
An abusive debt collector is redundant.
Bankruptcy lawyers cost money that many of these people don't have!
Also, depending on one's individual situation, bankruptcy might not be a good option. In those cases, we can at least prevent someone from wasting a lot of time, and point them in a direction that will hopefully be more productive.
