Filing for bankruptcy? There are bankruptcy lawyers to do that!
Bankruptcy lawyers cost money that many of these people don't have!
Also, depending on one's individual situation, bankruptcy might not be a good option. In those cases, we can at least prevent someone from wasting a lot of time, and point them in a direction that will hopefully be more productive.
Well, it's bankruptcy. It's assumed they don't have the money to pay for things!

CB, that is really cool. Money can be such a weight on people's shoulders. I know it has been for me before. Ain't no stranger to debt collectors, fo sho.
Isn't abusive debt collector an oxymoron? Those silly geese are angry and misleading.
N...no.
An oxymoron is a little giant.
An abusive debt collector is redundant.
D...damn you, you are correct. Oxymoron has so much more impact in sound, though.
So friendly debt collector would be an oxymoron. Also your mom is an oxymoron. Oh ho ho!

i cant say i ever officially advocated any one stance in a public forum by doin something with a group
not that i am against the idea or nothin, but man with the group mentality always comes the possibility of hearing some cat involved being outlandish and shit
I pay my taxes happily, that counts for something right?
Really I'm trying to make myself feel better for giving up on my plan to use my education degree in remote areas of Australia and ended up taking a job with a mining company
I used to do beach cleanup stuff, and I've done a few concerts where the proceeds went towards gay rights things and also for things that would keep music in the schools.
Stopped doing cleanups after one really awful July 4th celebration. The beaches the next day were a mess of watermelon vomit and half-burnt marshmallows. Plus empty beer bottles buried under the sand

Dang man ain't no reason to align with some elderly lady and a college dude that smells like top ramen and generic mountain dew, but that doesn't mean giving up on making the world a better taco joint. That's why you should start your own volunteer organization that accepts top ramen as payment for a nice steak taco and some crispy stellas. Ain't no one that knows pain like someone that just ate bad ramen raw.
it's amazing how many people feel insulted by this notion
God almighty
I have just realised that the person in your sig is not a keyhole shaped ghost.
Also, I am full of admiration for those of you who volunteer.
My brother volunteers at an old people's home and for the police and has just adopted a cat requiring daily injections, he makes me feel so guilty

I used to volunteer at a domestic violence shelter. Then I got super busy and fell apart and could not do it anymore. I'm hoping to be able to start again soon. The position I was in is full though, which is kind of a bummer. But there is other stuff I will be able to do.
I do Habitat for Humanity and give away all my platelets. The occasional food bank work too, but I guess it been a while since I did that.
I have kind of been kicking around the idea of applying for Organizing for America's volunteer summer training gig, but there's a very real chance that would involve quitting my job/moving for the summer and that kind of worries me.
I'd really like to donate blood, stupid mad cow disease
can't they just mark it and only give it to other europeans or other people that may have mad cow??
Man you don't want to end up with someone with Double Mad Cow!
I served community service once at a retirement home, that was some good times. I really should see about doing something like that again, might help me not feel like a worthless piece of shit all the time.
The volunteering, not the underage drinking I got busted for. Which would be impossible now that I'm 29.
I used to give blood regularly. Been a year since I came back from Iraq, so I can donate again. Next chance I get, I'm giving. I also volunteer at the USO center from time to time. Not quite the social change others are working on, but I'd like to think it helps.

I'm not really the volunteering sort I kind of prefer to get paid for my altruism but it has taught me a few things.
Social change via grand plans and national programs is for chumps

A magician gives you a ring that, when worn, will let you see the world as it truly is.
However, the ring will never leave your finger, and you will be unable to ever describe to another living person what you see.
i could stand to give up some of my time/blood/money
what's a good place to volunteer at?

Right now my friend is one of the organizers of V-Day here in Seoul. They've had art auctions, readings, and fund-raising shows. It's really cool.
V-Day is to raise awareness of violence against women and girls worldwide, and to generate funds to support organizations which seek to support, shelter and and defend victims of that violence worldwide. I feel bad that I've only been an attendee and not an organizer at any of their events, because it's a really good cause to espouse, especially in countries where it's not as easily or openly discussed, or where the laws are biased in favor of men (no offense, men) in cases of domestic abuse. In Seoul I believe most of the profits are going toward supporting KUMFA, the Korean Unwed Mothers & Families Association.
Actually I'm guilty on multiple counts. I have good friends and family members who work in social justice as shelter coordinators, community organizers, and directors of GLBT community centers, and I feel like these days all I have time for is studying and working and also working and studying. I go to events and whatnot, I just feel bad for not doing more, even though I know that at the moment I can't take on extra workloads.
In other news... if you haven't listened to this in a while it's still incredibly moving:

last week i volunteered at the museum up in the city, and spent the day helping kids with water colors and pastels and things
it sort of reaffirmed my aspirations of teaching, at least a little
and i founded/run a club at my school, and since the school is cutting the time for clubs to meet, we've been organizing some volunteer type stuff, right now with food for friends
picked up trash around my school the other day, too, that shit was filthy
Overall I've had positive experiences volunteering, with a few odd exceptions. My volunteering has been roughly 50/50 split between educational and political projects. I gotta say, though, it's really easy to get burned out on politics.

I keep telling myself that one day I'll get into politics and make a difference then, but I should try to do what I can now in the meantime.

It's a great way to learn. I used to be a lot more shy til I got into a lot of food bank work.
That said, you gotta trick a friend into forcing you to go or something.

I spend every Wednesday through the school year helping at an after school program for kids. (I am the dodge ball king)
then Monday nights I help at the local free clinic.
I do it as much to feel good about myself as much as to help others.
