Okay, the first gym is giving me a really hard time.
Oshawatt is my starter, and I got the fire monkey. Oshawatt is level 12, fire monkey is level 11. Do I just need to power level in Route 2, or is there a better place to do it? It's super annoying the way they did experience in this game before the first gym, because leveling takes a really long time when fighting lower level monsters.
I just realized my team is going to be fully half, maybe even 4/6th bug. I got Sewaddle, Tympole, Venipede and Pignite currently and I know I grabbing a Galvantula. Now to decide if I want a Sigilyph or an Archeops or a Crustle...

Your Monkey should be able to take out his monkey without leveling once, beat his Patrat with your Oshawott and then suicide it. Unless he stat ups like four times you should win easily.

Why would I suicide it, any reason?
Does a bit of damage and makes it less likely to set up on you, they usually go for the kill. If it doesn't set up at all your Monkey can tank like four or five hits, if it does once it can take 3 and so on. Bring a potion or two just in case but you should win pretty easily.
Picked up the game today and I am LOVING it. The updated graphics, the polish, my new water starter... the whole experience is just... smoother . I've decided not to look at any guides so the whole experience can be fresh to me. It's funny, I really am getting that sense of wonder I got back when I played red so long ago...
This is pretty much how I've been feeling. Enjoying White a lot more then I have the last few games.
Man, I feel really guilty smacking Lillipups around.
"You engage the Runaway Dog"
Anyway, I am definitely enjoying this a lot more than the previous gens. Just beat the first Gym and did the whole thing to unlock Dream World. Haven't tried it yet, though.
Did you like when you rival got the pokemon you were weak against in previous games ? Well now the gym leader is in on that as well. Thank god they give you a cheat mode due to the second starter because the way level works it would take one hell of a lot of grinding.
Also is it me but the game is a lot more challenging in the early stages. You can not just power level through the whole game with a few strong pokemon cause grinding gives you so little exp.
I just ordered the strategy guide off Amazon. Was like $12 and since I have Prime, I paid $15 total for it to be delivered tomorrow.
I almost do want to play without the guide, but I don't want to miss items or maybe even pokemon that I can only catch once.
Actually that might be something nice to put in the OP in a spoiler tag big miss-able items/pokemon, maybe sorted per badge end game so you do not have to spoiler yourself needlessly. That said I really can not remember a truly missable pokemon, if you always carry a zillion pokeballs with you....
Just got back from picking it up from Gamestop. I pulled a brainfart and got White instead of Black, but oh well. I figure I'll play through it and pick up Black later.
I highly recommend Bulbapedia and Serebii.net for all your Poke-needs.

Just a question though, why is Black the version to get ? I pretty much went through the exclusives list and saw that all the things I could catch in the extras list can be imported if need to be, so I got Black but it seems a pretty minor thing. Is that shop that big of a difference ?

It can be a little confused about which version is which because of the legendaries.
Also, Bulbapedia and Serebii are incredibly slow now because everybody is trying to meet their Poke-needs using them.

Well, it's:
A shop with access to cool items (allegedly, I haven't checked)
Versus:
Rare Pokémon that before too long everyone will have because of internet trading and stuff.

I noticed this too. The early parts are much harder.

Mostly due to Black City and White Forest.
Black City has items you can buy (really good ones) that help with battling and such. You can fight high-level trainers there with fully evolved Pokemon for good EXP. In White Forest, you're allowed to catch those Pokemon, but if you've got a previous version to transfer Pokemon in -- like me -- the value decreases. You can find the same items in the Forest, instead of the convenience of buying them.
Plus, Black City looks like friggin' TRON.
EDIT: As a first, I'm going to name my character BLACK in White. I traditionally have named all of my guys after the version I'm playing, but in the spirit of the switched colors I'm going to mix it up.

The items aren't that good. Just your average evolution stones.
And it is possible to power level at the start. Learned Razor Shell without any grinding and mauled through the first gym. Didn't even had to use the simian.
pretty sure the black city shop also has heart scales
that may or may not be important for some people

I just beat the first gym and that the hardest time I've ever had with a first gym leader. I still won on my first attempt, but it was really close there even with a team of Tepig, Lillipup, and Pansage.
I can't seem to get any shaky grass to show up on Route 1 to save my life. I want an Audino, damnit.
Rustling grass doesn't show up until after the first gym. I really wish someone had told me that before I spent half an hour trying to get an Audino to show up.
man i was really hoping UPS would get this to me today but it's not looking good
every time i order a game through amazon i end up not getting it release day, should stop paying for release date shipping

Well, it's Sunday. Release Day Shipping for a Sunday game is kind of cruel to offer, actually.

The game's been out for months and I guarantee Bulbapedia and the other sites have more in depth information than any strategy guide.

I last played Diamond, which was not so long ago, and I am hugely enjoying the improvements. I just realized that Blue and Red are 15 years old.....

This means less in the internet era but could still be a concern for some folk.
And tons of relaxed Roggenrola because that dude is awesome (and Sturdy makes it easy to catch them).

I'm getting Black because I always get the "first" version. My brother always gets the "second" So I get Black and he gets White.
personally I'd rather not have to hunt them in white forest though
