Some more words about Majesty 2, then.

Yes, it gets hard fast and "fantasy kingdom sim" seems a bit misleading. I am maybe seven missions in and it seems to be all about survival. The game really enjoys dropping you in a map surrounded by monster lairs and then just letting you fight it out. In my current mission, where I eventually have to kill a dragon, I start out surrounded by monsters lairs, flying giant serpents that breathe fire, dire rats, undead, minotaurs, and one more... Oh yeah, a fucking dragon. They all wail on you non-stop and wreck anything you attempt to build. I have managed to get a couple of towers up, and a handful of rangers and fighters, but they have little effect. I'm sure it can be done somehow, but it feels impossible right now.

It's like the game I thought this would be suddenly took a sharp turn to the left and now we're in unfamiliar territory.

Is anyone here contemplating getting Magicka? It's US$29.99 for the 4-pack, so US$7.50 each.

    Paypal, etc.?

(okay, it's not a huge saving, but why waste a dollar?)

I know that in the original game, you could get a lot of headway by combining the priests that summon skeletons (which are surprisingly difficult to kill) with mages (who do insane damage but die if anything sneezes on them). There was one map in particular which started with you being swarmed with minotaurs, where that was pretty much the only way to live that I could find.

Does Majesty 2 have anything like that?

Sort of. You can place Defend flags on buildings and units (like wizards), which other units will then try to defend. It works pretty well, if you can live long enough to get it going.

are any of the expansions (I got Kingmaker too since it was $2) more reasonable difficulty wise? I dunno how successful the game was, but this sort of thing is usually fixed in a mod or patch pretty quickly; but they're on xpack 3 now.

Again the game is still fun; it looks nice and has a lot of charm. It just likes kicking you in the balls off the bat.

The lack of information about 6 has me somewhat concerned. V was pretty good, 4 was a miserable pile of ass, 3 is honestly the best in the series, particularly with the xpacks.

Luckily my heroes V LE came with 3 and 4 complete so I'm good there.

I just gave Kingmaker a try and no, it doesn't seem to be any more reasonable. There are two missions available when you start, both are Advanced level, because screw beginner level, I guess. I picked one and it's balls hard, swarm you with enemies, survive until you reach a point where you can start to turn things around.

I wiped again. On the first level. I don't think this is for me.

ArmA 2 Contest Part 2: The Judgening Again

Lots of good arms, it was a tough decision. I think in the end I'm going to go with the Charger, because he's got the coolest looking arm. Greg Valentino is a close second, and scary in a completely different way.

Tempted to buy Rome: Total War (it looks like these Steam mod instructions for M2:TW work for R:TW also, in case anyone is wondering) but on the other hand I don't need another veedyo gaem. Is it worth getting over all the other Total War games? I like the time period, although not as much as the Medieval time period.

eh it's older so it's a bit more archaic. it's fun enough but I think the best total war game is provably Medieval 2. it's hard to go back basically

It's eclipsed by Medieval 2, but on the other hand it's dirt cheap and not too bad. It's the weakest of the total war games, because it came when they switched to 3d and the new map style, but hadn't really figured out a way to make it work. For all its flaws, I have to give Empire credit for turning the detailed world map into a positive.

I'd say go for it, if you haven't tried a total war game before.

A lot of people here seem to get it at some point, especially in a big sale. Right now it's finding that window of time where I can call them knowing I won't be interrupted for long enough that's a bit of a headache.

Ah, Majesty 2. You were making me cry with the Dragon and Dark Wizard levels, but then I tried out the Ogre level and everything was so easy and relaxing! I had an army of death stalking the land, and about 8 upgraded trading posts.

Yeah, turns out the Ogre you're supposed to kill can just randomly despawn after a game save, making the level completely unwinnable. I'd dumped over an hour into the level before I realised this. Aaargh.

    Rome:Total War giveaway contest

Alright guys, out of all the games in the Total War series, I've always considered Rome to be the best. Even though its AI is quirky, its diplomacy system is a mess, and certain unit rosters are overpowered/underpowered, it's still an incredibly fun game.

What's even better are the mods available for it - such as Europa Barbarorum.
    http://www.europabarbarorum.com/

If you've yet to try any games from the Total War series, you should definitely give this game a try.

Therefore, I'll be gifting two copies of Rome:Total War, if you're interested in a copy of the game, just add:

"@rome (RANDOM NUMBER between 1-100)", to your post.

Depending on the interest for it, I'll choose to end the contest in four hours or tomorrow before the daily sale ends.
