Visibility is a bit too high for that (you can see the mountains a few miles in the background). I live in a desert and typically if the sand or dust is enough to blot out the sky, then visibility is about 100 yards or less.

Desaturation is an artistic choice. Some people write it off as the desert being colorless but then I sort of doubt those people have actually spent much time in a desert.

Edit: Although the soldiers are also not casting strong shadows so I'll be charitable and just say there's the chance it's overcast.

Military games are so dark and brutal, I think we need a contest that focuses on the more cute and cuddly aspects of war.So heres my suggestion:

Find the most adorable military picture you can. Do not hold back on the cuddliness. I'm talking full frontal cuteness. If I don't let out an audible "awww" upon seeing the picture, the it should be disqualified.

    For example: 93a6f1c9-95a5-43c1-baad-7d51a1fff4cd.jpg

    Salut the cat, mutha fuckas

Yeah, it's kind of a dick move for those of us that want to wait until a lot of the inevitable game breaking bugs (or game unbalancing to the point of being somewhat broken, to be more precise) are fixed a while after the game's released.

If Napoleon ever goes on sale nobody will ever buy Empire when it's on sale, but if Empire goes on sale most people will realize that they've made a huge mistake and then jump on Napoleon when it goes on sale. Or never buy a CA game again. You know, whatever. Either way they've got the money from Empire.

Oh, right. It's Combined Operations, which includes the main game and the expansion.

I'm gonna go grab some dinner, and I'll decide the winner of contest 1 when I get back, so there's a little time left for a last-minute contest idea if anyone wants a copy.

Yeah. I'm kind of intrigued by having most of those Total War games on Steam in the package, but I think we all learned from Empire.

ArmA2 Contests Part 1: The Judgening

I think they're all good ideas. I'm conflicted, because I would really like to see DonHonk's in action, but I feel like that's going above and beyond the call of duty in pursuit of a free game. So here's what I'll do. I wasn't expecting MegaDoomer's suggestion, which takes the title literally.

So here are the official contest rules for Round 2:
    MegaDoomer wrote: »
find a screen shot or take a picture of what is in your opinion the best looking ARMS...

If you can post or otherwise produce the best/coolest/funniest/whatever picture of arms, you'll get a brand new copy of ArmA 2: Combined Operations.

With an addendum. Anyone who films a non-gamer struggling through the ArmA 2 demo will get preferential treatment for their hard work. Even the coolest picture of arms won't beat out even a mediocre video.

So MegaDoomer, pm me whichever email address you want me to send your code to. Sorry DonHonk, I liked your idea, but there's always Round 2.

I'll judge round two sometime tomorrow, whenever I get on again, if there are any attempts.

It's odd, because I thought they were only really selling the combined GOTY edition (Empire + Napoleon + all DLC/expansions), and that's been on sale several times (albeit often from other DD sites - still Steamworks). As comparison, Empire is being sold for £5 here, but I got the combined GOTY for £6 a few weeks back.

I'd have to say that L4D2's charger probably has one of the coolest arms in gaming history. In fact, his body is practically 50% arm. His arm is so cool that he doesn't even need two of them to kick ass.

It gets hard fast, that's for sure. The first maps are relaxed affairs, putter around and build stuff, kill a few monsters, and chill. Then it boots you in the face and laughs.

    Liquid Ocelot's Arm.

This arm was originally owned by Liquid Snake and was grafted onto Ocelot. The arm proceeded to take over the mind of it's host. This arm contains the personality and thoughts of an entire person.
Don't mention the MGS4 retcon, we all know Kojima did this because of the massive backlash against it in MGS2.

Well, its a desktop and while it was online at the old house, its offline at the current one and we are getting jerk off by a lot of people but not getting a CAT5 payoff. So supposedly its saturday, but the preggo lady is bored and really would like access to what i have dled on my account.

I'm not sure if there was stuff like having to have started it in online mode once, or gone into offline mode on that computer, or something. But I seem to remember steam automatically starting in offline mode, with fewer problems, if you start it with the ethernet cable unplugged, rather than just not working.

Don't you have to be online to switch on "Offline Mode" initially, due to the DRM aspects of Steam? Am I misremembering that?

Also, I would imagine the older the game is, the more likely you will be able to just run the game from the steamapps directory. Newer games with Steamcloud integration will probably need the proper Offline Mode switch.

When Steam has no connection to the Internet, it's supposed to gracefully turn into offline mode by itself.

Unfortunately, it's pretty stubborn about it.
