I'm ashamed to say that it would appear I have misspelled Shepard. Could an administrator please change my name to "Cmdr Shepard" to fix this typo? I would greatly appreciate it.

Name changes are, as a general rule, not done. Every once in a while, there will be a name change thread, where you have a 50% chance of getting your name changed to the one you want, and a 50% chance of one of the administrator's choosing. Which is typically something you don't want. Follow this thread if you want to roll the dice. Otherwise, you're stuck.
The thread comes up when the Whining sub forum shows up, usually once per year or so, but no set timeline. It's whenever Lewie P's Stepdad feels like it, and I believe the last time this perfect storm of events merged, it was only for a few hours.

The admin will not under any circumstances change your name unless he's feeling pithy and it's a joke, and you probably don't want that. If you want to change your name you need to submit yourself to the coin toss in the above mentioned FAQ, assuming you're lucky enough to catch the 6 hour or so period of time that forum is open.

I love the Whining forum. The inevitable tipping thread always appears and I got to troll a bunch of Lady Gaga fans. Too easy!
I'd be tempted to apply for a name change just to see what Tube would inflict me with.
EDIT: I wouldn't suggest making a second account just to correct your name either. Frowned upon.

Truth. The alt will be banned and your original account will probably get a profile infraction.
Could he request you or another mod to delete his account and then create a new one?
The OP from the thread Tossrock linked says pretty much no.
Well I think I will ask one of the other admins for a name change!
Good luck with that. There aren't any. Alpha is the main site admin and has no role on the forums. Ramius is the forum code admin and, while being objectively one of the best people on earth, doesn't deal with forum problems that don't involve the software. Which sucks for you because he is the messy liberal to my fastidious conservative. If you send either of them PMs trying to get them to reverse something I've done the net result is that we will sit around and laugh about it together while making jokes about your personal hygiene.

You aren't. Don't PM me. I'll infract you and say something mean to you.
I imagine the rules are as strict as they are because, with a forum of this size, it would be a gigantic pain in the ass if admins had to deal with name changes. Actually deleting accounts would be about the same amount of hassle

As far as I know, none of the mods are inclined to try to help people get around this rule.

I guess so. That seems obvious in retrospect.
Just look at it this way, OP, you have a unique name.

Seriously? just deal with it.
The chance of winning a cointoss from cardboard tube (aka Lewie P's Stepdad ) is low. Less the 50% So... dude. Just deal with your current name or you could end up with something far, FAR worse.

Actually I'm pretty sure that the odds of winning a coin toss are exactly 50%. Like... by definition.

Yeah. It sucks but it's not that big of a deal. You could end up with Vegeta666 or something like that... Whatever CT's in the mood to do.
Besides at least it's not completely off. A duplicate 'p' isn't exactly something to hate on.
Sheppard is a valid spelling. Bioware can't make you give up your account if you don't use their character names accurately. Their powers won't work in this realm.
Actually I'm pretty sure that the odds of winning a coin toss are exactly 50%. Like... by definition.
I honestly believe he doesn't always use a coin. If you look at how many people get their name change, it's WAY below 50%. But this is tube, the glorious edict leads me to believe he does he wants and who am I to judge?

Statistics do not work this way
Also, Sheppard, just work it - make yourself an av and run with it. Keep in mind we're coming up on a forum reboot and Alphamonkey has suggested that we may have to re-register at that time, so you might be in luck in the next few months

but they do work, and I'd be willing to bet that for the number of theoretical flips vs the outcome, the p value of the null hypothesis (ie, it is a fair coin) would be under .05, indicating that the flips are very unlikely to be determined by a truly random distribution.
If you had a full list of requests and outcomes it'd be pretty trivial to calculate.

Sheppard, if you can't be bothered waiting for the name change thread, you could always offer your sister to Bogey and see if that entices him to help.
Otherwise, your best bet is probably to send Lewie P's Stepdad a personal message every hour, and an email on every half hour in-between asking for your name to be changed. That name change section in the rules thread was in sarcasm.
Yeah, I'd say get used to the name and it can be something you laugh at when people point it out. My username almost everywhere is SharpTenor. I had that account but don't know what I did wrong, but couldn't get into it. So later made this one (before knowing all the forum rules!) and I've never looked back (not wanting to break the rules). It's awkward because Sharp101 is another user on here from about the same time...*shrugs*
Or- you could find a Commander Sheppard historical figure to pretend you made an homage too!

A fifty percent chance of a head or a tail doesn't not mean that the results have to be split 50/50. There could be a hundred heads and it'd be unlikely, but still legitimate.

Actually, I think all the name changes he's done are listed in that thread, I believe, along with coin toss results for most of them. So someone with the time and inclination to sift through it could do the calculations. I think some of the older entries might not include the results, but many of them do, and probably enough to do that kind of math.
The name change section of the rules? Not sarcasm. If you do decide to PM the admin that often, it was nice knowing you.

From the original post in the names thread, there are 123 name changes listed and all of them list the coin flip. There are 60 heads and 63 tails. Obviously it's not biased, but just for the sake of completeness, running a binomial test on this gives us a significance of 0.857, so it doesn't deviate from the expected probability of 0.5 from a fair coin.
ITT peer-reviewed and duplicated name change thread studies. We're forum scientists.
now maybe someone will come along and perform a meta-analysis of our individual results...

I love you guys. I really do.
I had total faith in Tube's honesty. I think it's more likely that undesired name changes are so very much more memorable than the ones people actually request.

When I first started on these forums in high school, I made the account Akilae....

So I've been stuck with these bullshit numbers for 6 years now.
