EDIT: I wouldn't suggest making a second account just to correct your name either. Frowned upon.

I imagine the rules are as strict as they are because, with a forum of this size, it would be a gigantic pain in the ass if admins had to deal with name changes. Actually deleting accounts would be about the same amount of hassle

I honestly believe he doesn't always use a coin. If you look at how many people get their name change, it's WAY below 50%. But this is tube, the glorious edict leads me to believe he does he wants and who am I to judge?

Also, Sheppard, just work it - make yourself an av and run with it. Keep in mind we're coming up on a forum reboot and Alphamonkey has suggested that we may have to re-register at that time, so you might be in luck in the next few months
but they do work, and I'd be willing to bet that for the number of theoretical flips vs the outcome, the p value of the null hypothesis (ie, it is a fair coin) would be under .05, indicating that the flips are very unlikely to be determined by a truly random distribution.
If you had a full list of requests and outcomes it'd be pretty trivial to calculate.
Otherwise, your best bet is probably to send Lewie P's Stepdad a personal message every hour, and an email on every half hour in-between asking for your name to be changed. That name change section in the rules thread was in sarcasm.
Or- you could find a Commander Sheppard historical figure to pretend you made an homage too!
A fifty percent chance of a head or a tail doesn't not mean that the results have to be split 50/50. There could be a hundred heads and it'd be unlikely, but still legitimate.

I think alpha said we would need to log back in, not reregister. Not being able to import accounts would be extremely weird and it would make me think alpha had been replaced by alien robots.

Slight misspelling is no big deal, just role with it. Otherwise you might be renamed to Sergeant Sheep Molester.
From the original post in the names thread, there are 123 name changes listed and all of them list the coin flip. There are 60 heads and 63 tails. Obviously it's not biased, but just for the sake of completeness, running a binomial test on this gives us a significance of 0.857, so it doesn't deviate from the expected probability of 0.5 from a fair coin.
now maybe someone will come along and perform a meta-analysis of our individual results...
I had total faith in Tube's honesty. I think it's more likely that undesired name changes are so very much more memorable than the ones people actually request.
