Hello, Android thread! Google's homepage tells me that the Nexus S 4G is now available on Sprint. I'm on Sprint without a contract currently rocking a Palm Pre that I've had since launch day. I'm more or less happy with the Pre, it sends texts, makes calls, browses the web, et cetera, but it's obvious that it is no longer a supported device.
Is it time to pull the trigger on a new phone with the Nexus S? Is there even newer hotness coming down the pike in the next few months to look out for? Do I wait for the iPhone 5(or 6)? I'm not really bound to a carrier at this point.
Also, 400k android devices being activated every day. yikes
100 million activated Android devices
400,000 new Android devices activated every day
200,000 free and paid applications available in Android Market
4.5 billion applications installed from Android Market
I humbly surmise that was over a very short peak period of time. If that were true, there would be 144 MILLION android devices activated per year. That's like 1/3 of the US population. It's...doable? But I don't see it as reasonable just yet.
The official ESPN video app, WatchESPN, was released today. It does not work with all cable providers (TWC, Verizon FiOS, and something else that I can't remember do work). It works well. Video quality hasn't been spectacular, but my WiFi signal strength is pretty poor in the area of the house that I've been using it in. It might be a lot better with better signal quality.

How are you on Sprint without a contract?
Also with this whole Ice-Cream thing, do you guys think the Evo 3D coming out next month will support that. It's a pretty powerful phone. Speaking of power, any idea of what kind of GPU it is going to have yet?

I'm month-to-month on Sprint now... at least, I assume that's why they keep calling trying to sell me on adding another line or whatever.

Oh so with Sprint you can run out your contract and go to a month to month after the 2 years?

I thought that was the deal with all carriers. I had the same thing with T-Mobile until they tempted me with this fuckmazing piece of digi-wizardry.

Question about the whole Google Music thing. Ok so back in middleschool and highschool when it was common place we all yo-hoed music. I don't anymore, haven't for years, I buy my shit now, but I didn't just delete the songs I already did have when the RIAA started cracking down. So what's going to happen with this "pirated music scanner" that Google Music will have? I mean some of the stuff I have is just ambient music from videogames or anime that aren't available on iTunes, will that get tagged even though you can't buy it? And what will happen to things that do get tagged?
I think only Google has the answer on that one. Do you like Russian Roulette?
If they sold user data to RIAA just so that the RIAA could sue people, I'd imagine them getting drilldoed in court.
OH my mother is thinking of getting my brother a refubished Droid X for Verizon. Are there any other phones that cost exactly the same refurbished that you'd recommend over it?
What's this pirated scanner thing? Is there a link to this bit of info? It's the first I'm hearing of it and wouldn't mind reading up on it.
Droid X is the best choice for those criteria. The only other viable choice is the Droid 2, but I only suggest getting that over the Droid X if a physical is a must-have for some psychotic reason.

You can look up the details easily enough, but I Googled it and just nabbed the first result for you to at least see that I'm not making it up.

I wasn't doubting you, I just hadn't seen it mentioned in any of the reports I'd seen and wanted to check it out for myself. It sounds like it scans your files and, if the copyright holder has a legit claim for not wanting the song up on the service, then it's taken down. It doesn't sound like it scans for illegally obtained files and takes them down and/or reports you to the Buzzkillingtons. Even if it did, I don't know how it could differentiate between a file ripped from an owned CD and a file downloaded from a blog. It's also entirely possible that I misinterpreted completely and it is, in fact, that bad. Good thing the vast majority of what I listen to is either independently released or released on independent labels that are pretty chill about it.
Still, it sounds like keeping a local copy of the collection you stick on the service isn't a bad idea. I personally have my collection backed up completely at three independent locations. I won't object to a fourth, especially one with Music's functionality.
people are getting in a huff over this. I read it as Google will pull something if the copyright holder doesn't want it online and streamable to you. Its not going to sound an alarm if it thinks its a pirated version. Is there a way to even see where something was downloaded from?
Pros: Really, really pretty. Runs incredibly smooth. Only 2.99.
Cons: Terrible, shitty, arcade pinball. The ball has no weight, the flippers are too long and have no finesse, and it is nearly impossible to send the ball where you want it to go.
Conclusion: If you enjoy real-world pinball and are a fan of Zen Pinball, Pinball FX 2, and Williams Pinball Collection, this game will disappoint and frustrate you. If you enjoy pinball just as a quick diversion, you would probably enjoy this game. I, however, quickly uninstalled and refunded this bitch within 15 minutes of purchasing it and will wait for Zen Pinball to come out for the Android later this year.
Android Market team: There are no plans on changing the 15-minute uninstall refund window.
I'm disappointed with that news, especially when there's more and more expensive apps out there that you can't fully explore in 15 minutes. Heck i've wanted to try Doggcatcher over BeyondPod for awhile now, but you can't test an app like that in under 15 minutes. There's $15 launcher replacements...how can you fully try it out in under 15 minutes? I know we have gut reactions, but really, at least make it 4 hours.

Anyone have much information on the LG Revolution? Apparently it's also launching tomorrow and might be a Verizon 4G phone. That might rank it above the X2 for me, hmm.

In cases like that, they really should have a free version with reduced functionality so you can try it.
When they updated the Market with the new interface (around December, I think?) the window was shortened to 15m.
personally, i think the solution to this problem is more choice. let the developer/publisher decide how long they want the return window to be; then include something within the market that lets the consumer know

Hey, that worked!
I'm a complete Android noob, got this phone 3 weeks ago and haven't really used it because the number haven't transferred yet.
yeah GO SMS does have a big warning when you first start it up to disable default notifications
I believe replacing default apps is only an issue for messages as indeed you'll have double notifications. Call Confirm is a good recommendation because if you just started playing around with your phone you might accidentally call people from some screens. There's more recommendations in the OP
Don't forget widgets like widgets to toggle some settings like 3g on/off. That's another thing android has above iOS.
Looks like the stuff I was reading on droidforums is dead wrong. I don't see any news anywhere on the X2 or an LG phone launching today. My bad. Also, I am disappoint.
The CR48 or whatever it was that was featured in those ads look fancy
the acer/samsung versions not as much

A website that was doing a preview of the Evo 3D seems to believe that it will be out by May 25th. Also somebody that was chatting with Sprint support got this:
10:34:29 AM : XXXX: thats fine, i wouldnt be looking at doing it right away. as long as i am able to do it by the time the evo 3d comes out
10:35:45 AM : Dewayne R.: Ok. EVO 3d will come out by the end of this month
Cross your fingers folks!
By the by Gameloft is going to be developing for and porting other games of theirs to the Evo 3D in 3D. I might just have to re-buy a bunch of shit so I can play it in 3D on a bigger screen than my iPod touch.
Specifically it seems like after leaving the area of a saved wifi network (work or home, it doesn't matter), it can't connect to anything. No internet connection and no phone service. Calls go straight to voicemail and I don't find out about them until I reboot the phone. Attempts to make a call just hang and don't let me hang up.
Anyone have any idea what could be going on/what to check?
Anybody here using SipDroid? Specifically, anybody here know why I get a garbage connection on my WLAN (while 3G is just spiffy). Seems to only be a problem if I move the phone around, too...something on the SipDroid site said something about using apps to fix your position, and this fixing bad WLAN performance...but it wasn't really specific, and I can't seem to figure out what they mean.
Phones that are officially supported by the app can find it in the market (might have to scroll down a bit). It supposedly works on the .596 deodexed build of Gingerbread for the Droid X, but I don't have that build. Currently in the process of getting ready to install it. If it works, I'll edit to confirm.
So here comes a stupid question, I have had my phone for over 6 months..and I am bored of it. I use it to text, call, play word feud before I go to sleep and that is about it. I know I could be doing more with it I just need some suggestions.
