My wife has an HTC. I'm not sure which one, but it's got the slide-out keyboard. The phone came with some bloat ware that she's been unable to uninstall, and she's tired of moving stuff over to the memory card whenever programs want to update. Is there a simple program available through the market that will remove pre-loaded programs like that, or would I need to root the phone to get rid of these? If rooting is the only option, what's the easiest way to root a phone for a relative newbie? The only device I've ever rooted was the HP TouchPad when I installed ICS, and I lucked into a stupidly easy-to-follow guide for that.
As far as I know, you won't be able to delete anything from /system without root. Step 1 is to figure out what model her phone is and then find the sub-forum for it on xda-developers.com. You should be able to find a rooting guide under the "development" section for that phone.
So, my wife and I still have old school EVOs (the originals, not even 3D) and we hate them. Waiting for upgrades on Sprint but I am holding out for the Note 2. My wife is holding out for the iPhone 5. Anyone think that the timeframe on these will be soon? And is getting insurance on the new ones worth it?

I'm pretty sure you'll need to root, but I dont know how much access you'll need (just root or s-off as well). I know HTC has a Web based unlock thing. I'll try to find it when I'm not on my phone. Itll only provide root though and not s-off.
My wife's phone is an HTC Evo Slide, now that I'm home to check. I'll look into xda-developers.com and see about rooting it on my next day off. Thanks folks.
So, are there any really good, actively maintained Simplenote clients? I see several ad-supported and paid clients, but most of them have promoted reviews complaining about how they're unmaintained and don't sync properly or loose notes or don't support tagging properly.
Evernote is pretty much the slickest note app I've seen on Android, but the Windows client is kinda crap, and I'm not quite ready to give up on markdown and my massive pile of txt files.
My HTC Incredible 2 just upgraded to Android 4.0 and it took a serious impact on performance. The menus, loading apps, etc are much slower now than before. Is there anything to improve that or do I just live with it?
Has anyone been able to get HBO GO to work on their S III? I have Time Warner Cable, and while I can watch HBO GO on both my xbox and my pc, I can't get it to work on my phone... I keep getting a TWC system error.

Should run better than that... I just put 4.0 on my wife's Galaxy S Captivate which is almost 3 years old and it runs great.
Maybe it's Sense acting up? Or maybe some bloatware?

Dunno, I don't think there's anything wierd on it but I'll might check again. I take the same approach to my phone as to my computer and install as little as possible usually.
Dehumanized is right; you can't use a GSM device on Sprint's CDMA network.
But in addition, you also won't be able to buy a Note 2 unlocked from Google anyway. Google itself only sells Nexus devices, of which the only phone right now is the Galaxy Nexus (which only works on GSM networks, although Sprint and Verizon sell carrier-locked versions). The Note is purely a Samsung affair. You will probably be able to buy an unlocked Note 2 (if only a European import) somehow, but it won't be compatible with Sprint's network.
Of course, it's totally possible that the Note 2 will come to Sprint; I just haven't seen anything indicating that it will. Of course, the Galaxy S3 is on Sprint.

I'm a big fan of Catch Notes, but I don't know if that one meets your requirements either.

What about the bloatware it came with? Maybe that stuff doesn't play nice with ICS

Catch Notes looks like it's own thing. Syncing with simplenote.com, specifically, is the feature I'm looking for. Normally I wouldn't care what service an app synced with, but I'm already using a program that syncs with Simplenote on my desktop, and I don't want to switch.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a screen protector for the S III? I dont know if I should go for a wet one or a dry one or the benefits one has over the other. Help me.

I removed all the crappy HTC stuff as soon as I got the phone but I'll give it another go and check if it added more things.
Ed: Well fuck. It seems they removed lots of options in this version of Sense, like the one to turn off animations for example. Half my settings are gone, fuckers. I can't even set different volumes on messages and phone signal any more.
How hard is it to root the phone with a different OS? Like the free blueish one that I forgot the name of.

I dunno. I was using a cheap one I picked up right after I bought my S III, but when I got my current case with the screen flap I took it off.
I will say this for protectors - I bought an ArmorShield (or whatever it's called) for my Xoom, and that protector is hardcore. I tried to trim it slightly, and it took me a couple of tries because the blade I was using would not cut through it. I'm assuming they have one for the S III, as well.
The Nexus 7's autocorrect/dictionary mode is a little annoying, when it autocorrects a word that i've backspaced to correct or remove a letter on to some sort of weird hybrid.

In case you didn't know, you can click on the suggested word bar, and a list of options will show. So like if you type 'con' and click on it, it will show connect, connection, contract, etc. It will also suggest phrases like 'go to', etc.

Sure, although I find that it does not reward fast writing!

I bought one for my One X from Clearplex. It's got actual impact protection and is slicker than the stock glass. Pretty awesome for $14.
Need impressions of two apps for my Nexus 7 if anybody has any.
One is Tablet Talk, which is a send-and-receive-SMS-on-your-tablet-by-syncing-with-your-phone app. Seems like it would be worth $2.99 if it functions smoothly.
Other is Splashtop Remote Desktop HD, currently on sale for $8.99 (regularly $19.99). Remote desktop isn't something I think I would use super-frequently but it would be nice to have the ability.
I have not really researched either of these things yet, so if anybody wants to dissuade me by saying there are better/cheaper alternatives, please go for it.
Depending on what computer you'd be connecting to, you might be able to use RDP. There's a built-in server in Windows 7 Pro, and there's several free client apps. Setting things up so that you can connect securely outside your LAN can be a bit fiddly, though.
It's not going to be as smooth as Splashtop, though. Like, don't get any ideas about playing games over RDP. It turns out that even Dungeons of Dredmor needs frames per second.

I am having crippling indecision folks. I have Sprint renewal right now.
My brain says "Hat, you should wait, there are new Nexus devices probably right around the corner!"
My...other part of my brain says "Hat, who gives a shit? The Galaxy S3 is ALREADY out. It has everything you want! Quad core, nfc, nice big screen! Just get it. GET IT NOW."
The first part of my brain says "but wouldn't you like to have that awesome Google Experience? You'd get all the updates ASAP! You wouldn't want to wait on android 4.2 (Klondike Bar? What the hell is a food with a k?)! Plus what if there's a leap in hardware?"
Then the second part of my brain says "who are you fooling son? You know you're going to root the shit out of that phone anyways so you'll get the updates fast. Hell, the Sprint and Verizon Galaxy Nexuses STILL don't have 4.1! You'd probably get Klondike Bar before them! Plus with NFC, 2 gigs ram, and quad core, what the hell else could they announce in a month or two? Ain't getting no 1080p phones!"
So this is the impasse I'm at. Right now the second part of my brain is raising some compelling arguments. What do you all think?
Edit: it's also theoretically possible someone could convince me to get the One X.

Well, Tablet Talk doesn't work for me at all, my Nexus 7 and old Droid X2 won't connect to each other via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, just times out each attempt. I've asked for a refund and their customer service is supposed to be good, we'll see.
Thanks for the advice on remote desktop, I'll consider a little more.
Tablet Talk works pretty well for me (Nexus 7 & Verizon Galaxy Nexus) although it does sometimes not seem to send messages from the phone to the tablet unless I manually sync. There were a couple updates released for it the past couple days. I'll see if that helps it any.
@ChaosHat, FYI if you want quad core S3 you will have to buy unlocked international version. All carrier-discounted S3's in North America are dual core and with the lesser GPU. Personally I'd snap up the S3 before any possibility an injunction will be filed against Samsung.

So I figure I should put something entertaining to do on my tablet here. I am not really an Angry Birds kinda guy.
What's up with that?
...and when you are done with that; take a folding
chair to Creation and then suplex the Void.
Goddamn it... Do you think that they will be pulling the S3 off the shelves because of the lawsuit?

Groklaw thinks the verdict is going to be overturned on appeal for certain. Turns out that the jury was persuaded to ignore the jury instructions by the jury foreman based on his improper understanding of patent law.

That would be great. I had heard about the jury foreman.
Im pretty sure that case didnt involve the S III at all, if I remember correctly Apple sought to add the S III to the case and the judge told them they are free to do so but doing so would push back the trial date so Apple decided not to.

However, I haven't read anything regarding the Note 2 coming to Sprint. The first model was only available on AT&T and, briefly, T-Mobile.
