So this has been annoying me for a long time, but are there any good alternatives to quick settings, that will actually turn on lte? It seems to only have a switch for 3G. Even better would be an lte switch in the pull down bar, and that may or may not be in ICS which I haven't installed in my skyrocket yet.
So I'm looking into getting a phone. The only smart phone I've used was a Blackberry that was years old and only for the BBM. I want an Android because it seems awesome. The carrier I'm looking at in Canada is called Wind Mobile. I know they don't have the greatest coverage, but they seem to have the best deals for what I'm looking for. I'm torn right now between Picking the Samsung galaxy S3, or the HTC One S. The S3 is the prettier phone, with the bigger/nicer screen. But will also cost me 299 with their deal. The HTC will only cost 99.
Any other proud Nexus 7 owners want to recommend a case? My eyes are glazing over looking at the proliferation currently available on Amazon. Currently leaning towards this though as it seems to be the only one with a stand that can switch between portrait and landscape modes.
I like it well enough for the price. It's basically just a smaller version of the case I have for my iPad, so I was already aware that I liked that style of case. Not sure what you mean by "stand for portrait mode". I can stand mine up in portrait mode if I'd like, though it was obviously meant for landscape.
I can't really see much of a need for a portrait stand, but mine would do it if I wanted it to.
The case is advertised as ultra-thin... how thin is ultra thin? I'm really trying to avoid getting a case which takes away from how thin this thing is...
Seems like a good alternative as well. Thanks! How current is that phone? One of the reasons I don't have any phone right now is that I find the price of the newest phones offputting, but by the time the price comes down I don't want to get it because there's something much newer/better out there. So I'm never satisfied!
Concerning ultra slim covers... I was looking at this one, one reviewer notes it would be too thin to protect from more than just scratches.. anyone got an ultra slim cover for their SGS3 and can comment?
I got a fat cover and while it looks really portective, it's also ugly as fuck :x

Its almost a year old now (Im pretty sure it released Dec '11) and while not as powerful as some of the newer phones (HTC One x, Samsung Galaxy S III), its still a really solid phone.
Pondering selling my 32GB wifi only ipad 2 while it's still worth a decent amount and switching to a 7" android tablet. My primary uses for the ipad right now are ebooks/comics/RSS feeds with some light browsing so I think something like a Nexus 7 could easily handle the load. One of the primary reasons to switch is I'd like something I can 1 hand read with when I'm on transit which the ipad is too big/heavy for. Does anyone else use it like this and can vouch for it's 1-handed usability for stuff like that?

It's also an official google phone, meaning you get system upgrades fast. My sister has it, and with android 4.1 it actually feels as fast as or faster than my SGS3

My gf uses her Nexus 7 for reading all the time. She's been reading all the Harry Potter books and she says she has no problem using it 1-handed. She says it's much easier than using her old Transformer.
Nexus 7 is definitely quite usable with one hand. Unless maybe you have really tiny hands or something. I have average-sized male hands and have no trouble. It's one of the reasons I prefer the smaller size.
I would very much like to take advantage of my larger screen and better processor and ram. I've got most of the utility apps I want but what are some of the better game apps for the N7? My favorite s on my phone are stuff like Peggle, Hero Academy, Battleheart, Zombieville, etc.

Everyone loves Dungeon Raid, the Kairosoft games and World of Goo, but none of those will really show off what your tablet can do. Maybe check the Android games thread?

Comic book pages might be rather small on the 7 inch screen.

I've never had an issue with comics on either the Kindle fire or on my new Nexus 7, I use the Comixology app. The Kindle app works very nicely on the N7, can't vouch for any of the other apps.

I'm pondering.. should I get rid of my non-lte SGS3 and get an LTE one once it's released? I have no LTE contract, but I think selling it will be much harder without LTE in a year or two...
Have I told you guys how I hate the AccuWeather app/widget thing that comes with the SG3? When you go by location it doesnt get very exact, for instance I live in a large city and temperatures can vary (usually) by 5 or so degrees depending on where youre at (its a coastal city, but it extends a decent distance inland as well as pretty far north). Anyway, because the app basically only gets specific enough to find out what city Im in, and not where Im at in the city, my phone is telling me its 83F outside. But if I put in my zip code? 110F. Jesus fuck.
Does anyone know of a nice weather app/widget that will tell me the temperature based on my location, but do so with the specificity of my zipcode?

Palmary Weather, it's amazing. I had some big annoyances with accuweather, palmary weather is so much better on EVERY level

Horn is pretty good. A bit expensive at $7 though.
So I'm comparing the HTC One S vs the Galaxy Nexus on versusio.com The HTC seems to beat it, spec-wise, in almost every area (and has the gorilla glass), but the Galaxy Nexus has better screen resolution. How much will I notice the lower res screen if I get the HTC?

Oh man, excellent, thank you, this is basically exactly what I was looking for.
My Samsung Captivate is broken. The button that turns the screen on and off just doesn't work anymore which means I've been backing up things and moving things by plugging it in/unplugging it to turn the screen on. I need a new phone. Luckily my contract was up at least a month ago. I was thinking briefly about getting an iphone 5, but there are android things I would miss. Like widgets, and swiftkey.
Now, the Galaxy S3 looks really nice, but like I said I have a Captivate. So I have been burned by Samsung before. Oh, the GPS doesn't work but we'll fix it RIGHT AWAY, and you'll totally get the latest version of Android in September 2010. And I was still waiting months into 2011. And then it was the talk of this thread that Samsung never updated their stuff, so I should have really listened. So I am not really enthusiastic about getting another Samsung phone. Are they better about this now? Is there something terribly wrong with the GS3 that I should know about?
My husband has a Galaxy Nexus and it seems like a nice phone, but I have been thinking it would be neat for my phone to have a nice camera and be able to take nice pictures, since every other camera phone I've ever had didn't really. Also it's a year old (though for that reason it's cheaper, so that's a plus - also I guess it's not a whole year old yet). Does anyone have any other recommendations for Android phones on either ATT or Verizon? I'm on ATT right now (I have an old unlimited data plan) but I can join my husband on Verizon. Either way. Thanks.
I bought an Onda VI40 Ultimate 8GB back in July, and I absolutely love it. It's a huge upgrade from my shitty old WoPad i7. For €130 (and €20 shipping) I got a tablet with a 1.5GHz (1GHz, more like) Allwinner A10 cpu, 1GB DDR3, Mali 400 gpu and the same 9.7" IPS screen of the iPad 2. The original firmware which ran ICS 4.0.3 wasn't great, with limited access to the Play store, but I've since flashed it so it's now running CM9 with ICS 4.0.4, and the difference is incredible. It's now very, very smooth, a completely different tablet with full access to the Play store. I can even play Dead Trigger with the highest settings, though it does tend to slow down a bit with loads of zombies on the screen, so I tend to play on medium.
If I'd known about the Onda VI40 Dual Core I'd have gone with that, since performance is supposedly much better, but I'm very happy with what I have. The screen is so damned bright and vibrant that I always have it turned down to the minimum setting. I typically get about seven hours of use with it. Just waiting for Jelly Bean to be released for it and CM10 to mature a little. If anyone's looking for a nice, cheap tablet, I heartily recommend the Onda line.

...and I thought of how all those people died, and what a good death that is. That nobody can blame you for it, because everyone else died along with you, and it is the fault of none, save those who did the killing.
So after being embarrassingly out of line with current technology, I'm about to upgrade from my old (OLD) reliable Noxia shitbrick and buy my first smartphone. I'm looking at the HTC One X.

We just switched to Verizon a few days ago and I got a Galaxy S3 and so far I love it. The only problem i've had so far is the predictive text isn't always accurate. Samsung has confirmed that the Jelly bean update is coming in October but who knows.

Does anyone know if the new Droid Droid (Droid 4? The Motorola with the slideout keyboard) is any good? My grandmother is currently using some crappy LG something because it was the only phone with a slideout keyboard at the time (I have no idea where the Droid 3 was) but apparently it keeps calling and texting people that differ from who it says its calling/texting. I assume if I want to upgrade her phone Im going to have to pay out of pocket which is going to make this very rough, but the lady needs a functional phone and kinda needs a slideout keyboard.

My brother has the Droid 4. He says it has an excellent keyboard and it's fast but it's taking him a bit longer to get used to this phone than his Mytouch 4g slide. He said it seems more "complicated".

I tried it out in a Verizon store earlier this year and thought it was crap. The screen had noticeable ghosting issues and the keyboard required a surprisingly large amount of force to type on that made it slow and clunky.

Unless the ghosting is super disruptive/noticeable I doubt thatll matter since itll probably leagues above what she currently has. However, the buttons being hard to push may make the device a no-go. I'll try to take her to a Verizon store so she can try it out, and who knows, shes usually really good at getting shit for free so maybe theyll let her upgrade on the cheap.
Having one, I can confidently state that the One X is an awesome device. Sense runs like a dream, the camera is basically unbeatable at this point for features and ease of use, and Beats on it works very well. The only downsides are the non-removable battery and lack of expandable memory. The screen is without equal, IMHO. The fact that it's only $100 right now helped me to look past the aforementioned faults. Battery life on it is pretty amazing as well. Never had a smartphone I've had to charge as infrequently as this one, either.
try swiftkey3, it's the keyboard made by god for his angels using android
Alright, i'm giving this thing a shot. I use my phone to text in orders at different stores for my job on Tuesdays so I wanna see just how good the predictive text will work. I have 11 stores tomorrow so it's gonna get a workout. I hope it's as good as you say. Anything that speeds up my ordering helps me to get home faster so I can goof off.
Swiftkey is okay, but get in the Swype beta. Yes, it's more of a pain in the ass than just downloading an app from the store, and the new version isn't as good as some of the older ones, blah blah whine whine blah. It's still the best thing to happen to touchscreen phones ever.
