Hi, I was wondering if anyone felt like critting a piece I did today for our illustration concepts class. The remit was to present an odd (or 'ideal') couple, in black and white with no background elements, paying particular attention to the relationship between the two characters, such as how they contrast or compliment each other in their tastes/appearance/attitudes/body language etc etc. And to make a strong image in the process ultimately for display at around A2 size. Anyway, I've shown this to a few friends and they've said nice things, but I need some harsher critting so I've come here, knowing you lot are rather good at that : )

So, without further ado:

There are a few concerns I have about it myself. I'm worried it's a little generic and uninteresting, especially the old woman, but I'm kinda proud of the guy's expression. I got the idea from a couple I saw getting off the metro and the old man just looked so hopelessly lost. Also, the actual file I'm working on is at a rediculous resolution for printing purposes (5120x3840) which kinda kills my laptop and my productivity, what resolutions do people reccomend for large print outs? Only just starting on this digital picture shenanigisms. It's also a style I haven't really tried before, so I know some of the shading is a bit odd in places, but I'm not so concerned about that as general concept, composition and characterisation.

Ta for your time guys!

There are several things that bug me. The contrast between the shadows is really strong, it's almost distracting... also... those are some crazy shadows! I'm having a hard time telling where the light source is.

The old man's hand holding the cane is really wierd... but what bugs me the most is the old lady's pose. I've never seen an elderly person that can twist like that...
